Great reaction as usual Biss. Miss Bisscute, the captain of Red October was played by Sean Connery, the first man to play the character of James Bond, his filmography is extensive, but I suggest two films starring him for future reactions: Il nome della rosa (in italian, 1986) and The Rock with Nicolas Cage, great performances beyond his accent that you will surely enjoy.😊

Cold War American submariner here. I was on a Boomer out of Rotten Groton, and played the game with the Russians. This is an incredibly accurate movie, based on an even more accurate book. As part of Groton, I got to see the advance screening of this movie, sans any civilian employees or dependants, the same day our counterparts in San Diego did. The very few inaccuracies were called out, but there was basically unanimous laughter when Alec Baldwin asked the question, "How do you get a crew to want to get off a nuclear sub?". Everyone knows the answer is simple: open the hatch.

I think it was cool enough that the movie started out with actors acting as part of the USSR speaking in Russian at the beginning. That way, you could instantly tell what side Sean Connery was on. You are totally right. His native Scottish accent was way too strong trying to speak in English with a Russian accent as well as others with native British or Irish accents to those who could tell at least. At 7:30 in the video, she stated that "his Russian doesn't sound like native Russian" and that was just at the very beginning of the movie. It's can be hard to try and pretend to have an accent of a different language that your not native to depending on where your from. Image all the actors in the movie on in the USSR side trying to do that throughout the movie. 😆

There are two types of Sonar, "Passive" where the Sub just listens and stays undetectable. The second is "Active" sonar which sends out sound waves and gives away the senders position... 99% of the time they just use Passive.

Addendum to this.... A ship or submarines propellers make noise, like how your tires make noise while driving... faster you go, more noise you make. But if the submarine cuts engines to stop (the propellers, not the actual engine, via a transmission, like a car), then it doesnt make noise... when the Red October did a "crazy Ivan" turn around the Dallas, the Dallas put the gearvto Stop, but boats drift, so the danger was theyre now quiet but might drift into the Red October. Other things that make noise are opening torpedo doors, flooding torpedo tubes, and the hull stretching or compressing from changing depth. The Caterpillar Drive on the Red October was a big deal because the noise it would make would be soooo quiet compared to the propeller noise. Countermeasures they used worked because they made the water bubbly, and the bubbles collapsed making noise. When Ramius was responding to Mancuso's persicope messages by ordering "verify our range to target, 1 ping only"... that is what Active Sonar is... which is how a bat navigates... sending out a sound, then timing it's return. But it also tells your target exactly where you are, like shouting in a dark room.

The “see through” shots are not mistakes. It’s how they did green screen shots, where the foreground film is made slightly transparent compared to the background film. This softens the edges to make it look more believable, otherwise the outline would stick out and it would look horrible. The downside is you can slightly see through it if you pay attention. Star Wars used this technique in many of the spaceship shots and you can slightly see through cockpit metal props.

"Boomer" is a word used for a military submarine that is used as a nuclear missile platform first. Larger subs usually are meant for this, a first strike weapon in case of a war as they carry nukes. They can of course use torpedoes in naval combat as well, but that is not their primary function. The smaller submarine from the other Russian captain that was hunting the Red October was the hunter type, smaller and leaner, meant for direct combat with other submarines and boats.

The way I always get around the lack of a Russian accent is to suspend disbelief just a little further and decide that their accent is being pretend-translated into English for me just like their words. Also, we’re meant to imagine that they’re continuing to speak Russian amongst themselves, so they wouldn’t hear much of an accent at all.

There are several ways an aircraft can detect a submarine apart from visually on the surface.. As you mentioned they do have sonar buoys they drop and listen to but some also have a magnetic anomaly detector which can detact the disturbance in the earth's magnetic field caused by the mass of steel of the hull of the submarine. Also when they referred to a "boomer out of the barn" they are discussing a ballistic missile submarine leaving Murmansk (Main submarine base of Russia's Northern Fleet) rather than a hunter killer like the Dallas. Hope that helps :)

A "berth" in terms of ships is the place at the dock where the ship ties up. To give a wide berth is to give plenty of room between the ship and the dock, so they don't hit. It means to keep plenty of room from the object you will give a "wide berth" to. Colloquially, it's often used as "to stay away from" generally. For example, you could say you will give another person a "wide berth" which will generally mean you will avoid them.

I watched this in theaters with my father, a member of the Rickover fleet, serving on boomers. He laughed so hard when Van Pelt asked the Siviet Ambassadir "You"ve lost *anither* submarine?" Rickover personally interviewed every single officer put forth to serve aboard 'his' boats, and he was not a nice man. Apparently the officer who had the interview slot before dad's left almost in tears. Dad said because there was so much secrecy around the first nuclear powered subs the escape hatches were actually welded shut after the boat left home port. That made it impossible for anyone to exit the boat except through the hstch at the top of the sail, and that was readily available and heavily guarded whenever the boat made port calls. Nobody left unless authorized and in a group. Any nuke boat ssilor by himself would be a prime catch for Soviet espionage. Even the lowest ranked enlusted sailor had to know how every single xystem worked and be able to explain every system in detail, passing multiple tests to earn his badge. There was nobody who only knew one job.

For the bulk of the film the crew of the Red October are all speaking Russian, and we hear the English translation, without Russian accents. Sean Connery’s Scottish accent substitutes for Ramius’s Lithuanian accent, etc. When we get to parts of the movie where the Russian characters are speaking English, we get accents (though Ramius still has his Scottish accent.)

Great reaction Biss! There are 2 basic types of sonar, active and passive. Put simply, passive sonar is microphone that gives a general idea of the position of an oject. Active sonar works like radar in that it sends out an active sound "ping" which can be used to trace the exact location of an object based on the sound reflections bouncing back. The downside is active sonar exposes your exact position to the enemy. Passive sonar is less exact, but stealthy.

About the language. They wanted Sean Connery as lead and he couldn't do a Russian accent so they came up with that neat transition. The Sonar "ping" goes in all directions. Sound travels far in water. When the sound wave encounters and object, it is reflected, (echoes) back and is picked up by the sending ship. The closer to an object, the closer the pings will be together (active sonar). The ship's receiver microphones can detect from which direction the echo is coming, thus giving a position. The speed of the echo is then used to determine distance.

You're right to question the sonar in the movie. In reality the subs would never get that close to each other. They do have blind spots, typically directly behind in a small arc. Sonar is either active or passive. The 'ping ping' is active sonar, the way the Dallas is spotting the Red October is passive sonar. The passive sonar works differently at different depths and sea conditions and always has distances where it detects optimally and other distances where it is partially blind, due to thermal and other variations in the way sound waves move through water. Typically these subs would be miles apart, not 1000s of meters.

@29:40 Anti-submarine aircraft typically rely on two main tools for detecting submarines. 1) Magnetic anomaly detectors (which sense magnetic field changes caused by a submarine's hull, engines, etc; 2) And then sonar buoys they can drop down to the surface of the water and which then relay information back to the aircraft.

I was in a submarine 22 years ago. It was a decommissioned boat in NYC called the USS Growler. It was built in the 1960s and was diesel-powered. 40 years later, you could still smell the diesel. Submarines are very cramped. There were even bunks (very narrow ones) between the torpedo tubes! It takes a special person to be a submariner. My neighbor was one. He said the sleeping quarters were so tight, he could recognize someone in the dark...by the way they smelled! Submariners also "hot bunk." That means when your shift is over and it is time for bed, the mattress, sheets, and pillow are still warm from the submariner who just got up and out of it to start his shift. Those are some reasons why they get the best food in the Navy.

"We must give this American a wide berth." "I don't know what a 'berth' is . . ." In this context, the berth is kind of like the "personal space" of the vessel. "Giving someone/something a wide berth" means to give it plenty of room. Aside from in this specific phrase, "berth" is more generally a nautical term describing a resting place (like a sailor's bed or the place where a ship is tied up at a wharf or dock).

Dear BissFlix: You guessed every single hidden plot exactly (the plan to evacuate the submarine, the cook as the saboteur, the role of the Doctor, the strategies of the ships...). I have never seen any reactor being able to guess all of this!!!! My congratulations!!! Regarding severa of your questions: ** ? "giving a wide berth" - It means to avoid something, giving it as much space as possible. ** 14:00 That is indeed the Soviet Union Anthem. It was in use until 1991. After that, following the disentegration of the USSR, this was replaced by the Russian Anthem. ** 46:30 + 1 yard = 0,91 meters. One can usually make a 1-1 correspondence between yards and meters, without much error. + 1 Mile (US land) = 1,602 kilometers. HOWEVER, do not confuse it with a NAUTICAL mile, which is used universally for ships of all nations: + 1 Nautical Mile = 1852 meters = 1,852 kilometers + 1 feet = 0,304 meter. Also, 3 feet = 1 yard. One can also consider 3 feet = 1 meter without much error. ** 53:35 "They just attracted the torpedo...?" They did that indeed! Great observation!

Greetings Ms. BissFlix! Another enjoyable and honest reaction from you to another work of Classic Cinema... never curtail your honesty milady! It is fun to see you theorize about certain plot points in these films, and even more fun when you see you were right! I'm also glad you were able to follow along easily on the intricacies of this plot... I am a long time fan of the books by Tom Clancy, and have enjoyed most of Hollywood's translations to film, as well as some of his books inspiring Video Games like the RAINBOW SIX series! Thank you again for sharing the experience, it has been more than 20 years since I last viewed this film with my Dad and brother... 🙏😚

Biss: I was a submariner back in the before fore times, and we used to do the string trick. We'd tie a string across the widest part in the engine room, and dive. And then watch the string droop as the hull was compressed. It ends up way more slack than you'd think. :) (I'm writing this as you're talking about how you wouldn't be caught alive on a submarine)

Sean Connery got this role on the basis of being a megastar. But he got a lot of criticism at the time for not even trying to hide his Scottish accent. I think Hollywood believes that there are only two accents: American and Foreign.

In regards to the sub that was lost diving on the Titanic, all of the experts seem to agree they should never have built the sub out of composites. If I understand correctly, composites are weak against pressure that runs perpendicular to the grain. Pressure on the hull is precisely that.

Subs have two types of SONAR, active SONAR and passive SONAR. Active SONAR is mounted in the sub but has less range/accuracy. Passive SONAR is generally achieved by dragging antenna leads behind the sub to generate longer range/more accuracy.

That little sub that imploded was a commercial enterprise. The owner didn't want to pay the fees involved with getting it CERTIFIED safe by experts. He died with his clients. Greed kills. Yes, Alec Baldwin shot his cinematographer on set in New Mexico, about an hour from me in Albuquerque. The charges were dropped but the "armourer" -- the 24yo woman in charge of guns on set -- is subject to charges. It was her job to ensure the rounds inside the gun were blanks. How a live round got in there will be debated forever. Rumor says it was sabotage against the armourer, who is a local. I've lived here 11 years, and apparently, NM has a history of people holding grudges. But it's also possible that crew members took some guns during a break to shoot cans, and the guns weren't rechecked (so says Wikipedia). To me, there's shouldn't have been live rounds within 5 miles of the set. I've been to Los Alamos NM a few times. It's a great little town in the mountains. My brother's friend works at the Lab. He lives on Oppenheimer Way! Two things about that town. It has the highest per capita income in the US. And you can drive on the public road by the Lab, but your car will be stopped, and a guard will look at your license. The same thing happens if you approach from the west. I've never seen that anywhere else. If you have a NM license, no sweat. If you don't, I assume they ask more questions.

regarding sonar; many submarines have several sonar; in the nose of the vessel called the conal sonar, sonar down the sides called the conformal sonar (but because of the noise of the ocean along the sides, its practically useless...), and finally the towed sonar array, the most sensitive sonar that can hear from much further away from a target and its range of hearing is much cleaner than the others. in the movie, the Russians used a maneuver called Crazy Ivan; turning 360 degrees to see if anyone would be behind them. in reality, the towed sonar array makes it so that that kind of maneuver would by pointless as it wouldn't be needed.

the reason the actors are not speaking with a Russian accent is the characters aren't meant to be "speaking" English, they are in fact speaking Russin and the movie is just translating for the English speaking audience.

Your question about how the anti-sub aircraft can find a sub, they can look for magnetic anomalies if the plane has the right radars. When it detects a magnetic anomaly it would then drop the sonar buoys to confirm and/or mark where it was detected

It wasn't fake news. What they were implying is that this story could be true, or not. But it's a secret. This was during the cold war when the US and Soviet Russia played a lot of cat and mouse games with each other, A boomer is a nickname for a very large submarine. The captain is Sean Connery. Very famous actor who played James Bond. He's Scottish, and rumor has it that he refused to do a fake Russian accent, so they let him keep his Scottish accent. There were actually quite a few real Russian actors in there too, so their accents were good, but the Americans had so-so accents. But Sean Connery knew he would get a lot of criticism if his accent was not good, so he said no. The US Navy actually has DSRV rescue subs. I was in the Navy and used to repair subs and worked on one of those DSRV's. As far as the "mistakes, this movie's special effects were considered to be very good at the time. There was no CGI, so the subs were actually miniatures and the the underwater scenes were filmed in a room full of smoke to make it look like water. Thanks for this reaction. You're smart and figured a lot of things out, and it's one of the reasons I like your channel

One clarification but the crew didn't think they were going to nuke an American city. He told them their orders were to get near the American coast and conduct missile DRILLS. To practice but not actually launch nukes. The false orders were a "training mission" one that gave a plausible reason for why the sub was going so close to American so the captain could setup the defection.

Biss, while you are correct we haven't discovered everything that's in the ocean and it's huge.. keep in mind the water pressure as you go down further. creatures that live down there wouldn't survive up here, just as we can't survive down there not just because of air, but because the water pressure is so massive. There's no telling what's down there, but a squid would have a hard time with a submarine like that one. that's a big submarine, and it's made of strong metal designed for the water pressure. the squid is made of flesh.

Yes, aircraft back then used sonar dropped buoys to detect submarines. They also had these things sticking out of the back of the plane that would detect the magnetic signature of the submarine. Even it at that distance thousands of tons of metal and the onboard electronics give off just enough magnetic disturbance to be picked up if your sensors are sensitive enough. Magnetic Anomaly Detectors. That dont use MAD's much anymore, but now theoretically you can detect submarines by satellite. They supposedly can detect the very minor disturbances in the surface water even when the sub is at depth. Supposedly.

29:25 "How would an anti-submarine aircraft find a submarine when they're underwater so deep?" Sonar. Sonar sends a soundwave out through the water. If that wave hits something like a submarine for example, it bounces back to the sonar receiver. For sonar to work properly, the signal must be sent and received in the water. So aircraft like this one drop lots of "sonobuoys" that float on the surface, send sonar signals into the water, detect whatever bounces back, then radio the results to the aircraft.

29:36 they can drop a sonar set into the water and listen for the boat. On submarines, we consider high altitude aircraft that do ASW to be a joke, lmao. You see, the Navy uses ASW = anti-submarine warfare. But on a submarine it means auxiliary seawater, one of the mechanical systems on the submarine. So when a surface guy says he is in asw, we say, "oh, so you're a machinist mate who works on the auxiliary seawater system?" lmao. 🙂

I served aboard a U.S. Navy Frigate, similar to the surface ship that is seen picking up the crew of the Red October, during the time that the movie is set. We were an anti sub warfare ship. We played the game with the Soviet subs in the North Atlantic. The North Atlantic is unofficially considered U.S. Navy territory because we have so many naval assets in the waters of the North Atlantic. Fun fact, at that time Frigates and their bigger brothers Destroyers used oil fired boilers as their main power systems. The Frigate I was aboard required two days to build up steam for her to get underway. I know because we had to take one of our sister ship's missions last minute and we couldn't get underway for two days.
