Today we react to The Hunt For Red October. One of my all time favorite movies! This is a first time reaction for Thoren. I'll let you judge by his smile how he rated it. LOL

As someone already noted the toilet paper is for wiping the screens. But why? Well it was common back in the day to use grease pencils (aka wax crayons - yes really) to write things on the glass display screens. Afterwards you need to clean the outdated info, hence the paper. Yes, I know it sounds crazy. Nowadays the software usually allows you to make those notes/marks. But using a grease pencil is real fast and easy to do. Sometimes you don't need cutting edge tech to do the job. Back in WW2 right up to 'Nam, naval tactical displays on ships had a yeoman stood behind a big transparent perspex screen writing information (backwards) for the tactical staff to read the situation. There are several generations of Navy vets who can still write backwards without having to even think about it...

Tom Clancy wrote it in the book-- even though Dallas had a computer display, there was a paper chart right behind it because charts don't break.

The TP was a very real solution to a real problem. Your under water with varried temps causing condensation on verious surfaces. You need to be able to wipe clear a screen and TP was an easy fix.

I love how you let your son just work things out for himself. Even if it takes a minute. (As w them purposely faking the leak) gotta love kids! I have one who’s 23 and one 15 and I do the same w them. (W movies and life😂) if mine actually miss the whole point I’ll explain it but other than that I’ll let their brain work! That’s what I like about these older movies. Like he said, they’re actually using their brains 😂

'they must have some impressive anchors on that thing, because it has to stay very very still...' ahhhh, no. You conduct all air operations while underway. In fact, to launch fixed wing aircraft you need to be at a sufficient speed to get the right amount of wind over the flight deck so they have enough lift to get airborne.

The toilet paper is to wipe grease pencil from the screens and/or any status boards. Submariners love grease pencils and plexiglass status boards.

14:08 the Admiral in this scene is played by Fred Dalton Thompson. He later went on to become a U.S. Senator in real life and even ran for President one time. Also since y’all didn’t mention it when he appeared on screen the first time. The black admiral in the regular business suit at the beginning of the movie that Jack meets with, is played by James Earl Jones, the voice actor of Darth Vader. This movie is PACKED with amazing actors. Sam Neill from Jurassic Park, Tim Curry, Scott Glenn, Richard Jordan from the 1984 Dune movie, Gates McFadden from Star Trek: The Next Generation in a cameo at the beginning of the movie (Jack’s wife)

You remarked about how big the Typhoon Class Sub was, they actually have a swimming pool in it (but the water is pretty nasty looking). I was a big Tom Clancy reader but stopped when he started his "Op Center" stuff. The exterior of the Soviet Sub was a Barge made to look like a Sub. Once Connery signed on to the movie, everyone in Hollywood fought for a part in the movie...

The books are written by Tom Clancy. The books are INFINITELY better than the movies. Recommend to read in the order written. Also recommend to STOP after Rainbow Six. Everything thereafter was a "collaboration" effort with other writers. Essentially... they wrote the books based on the world Tom created, and the MASTER of literacy was sidelined and simply took profits from the value of his name.

Sorry I'm late to the party, but I thought I might clear something up for you. At about @14:00 the conversation turns to sonar, and how it could or could not be used to run Red Route One. Sonar works in two ways: passive mode, or listening for the sounds of other ships/subs; and active mode, where you send out an incredibly loud ping and listen for the echoes off the hulls of other ships/subs, or in this case, the landscape of the sea bottom. The only practical way to navigate those canyons would be with active mode sonar, as the canyon walls are not themselves sources of sound, so you'd need to ping continuously. The trouble with that is the moment you send the first ping, everybody else in the entire North Atlantic knows approximately where you are; and when three or more of them have had a moment to confer, they know exactly where you are. So, no active sonar. Hence, stopwatches and incredibly accurate maps.

Oh boy...this one could be dicey for the young'un. LOL It is loaded with jargon and somewhat hard to follow due to its complexity, so I hope he can get into the story and the characters. It used to be an easier movie for me to watch, and I have seen it more times than I care to admit, but now that Alec has actually shot and killed somebody, I cannot see this movie without a bit of sadness for the victims of his negligence.

Can I suggest some (80's & 90's) movies? Watch Paul Verhoeven's ''Robocop'', ''Total Recall'' & ''Starship Troopers'' (Paul Verhoeven is btw also Dutch). And Neil, since ''The Hunt For Red October'' is one of your all time favorite movies (and I guess you like the submarine genre), watch with Thoren the German classic ''Das Boot'' (1981), by Wolfgang Petersen (director of ''The Neverending Story'', ''Enemy Mine'', ''The Perfect Storm'', ''In the Line of Fire''.....), who sadly passed away last year. Not for the channel, maybe, but at least in private setting...Greetings from The Netherlands

The "toilet paper" is for wiping the screens...but can also obviously be used for blowing your nose. LOL In real life, the Soviet Typhoon Class SSBN is huge, with 7 separate pressure hulls (2 of them are the escape pods) surrounding 20 huge missile tubes, and all wrapped in a steel outer hull...the whole thing displaces 48,000 tons when submerged. And the Red October is supposed to be even bigger. I know what you mean about it sounding fictional, but "stabilator" is a real thing...it is what you call it when the elevators on the tail of a plane also act as stabilizers while it is in flight...hence the combination of stabilizer and elevator into stabilator. So, for example, if you look at the back end of the F-16, the horizontal moving surfaces that make the plane pitch up or down are actually fully moving stabilators. 💯 And yes...aircraft carriers are pretty much always moving, and all the planes and helicopters can take off and land while it does. The only time the aircraft carrier is not moving is when it is in its home port, or in some other friendly and well defended anchorage.
