I do the same online warning people not to mix 100 parts (parts by weight) potassium nitrate with 18 parts charcoal and 16 parts sulfur (or 100 parts potassium nitrate with 24 parts charcoal) with a little water so it's like a clay, gently grind it into pellets in a mortar and pestle (in small batches), then let it air dry. And whatever you do, DO NOT expose the pellets to open flame, excessive heat, or sparks of any kind! And ESPECIALLY don't ignite it if placed in a metal pipe sealed at one end, definitely not after accidentally pushing a bit of cloth and a lead ball down the pipe. Seriously, don't do it!

Bathing in the Roman era was a way of life. If you weren't at the public baths by nightfall, you weren't worth your weight. Plus, steam rooms, baths of various temperatures (which must be done in order, to "open the pores"), scented oils, wine, food, etc. This carried on to some extent during the medieval period, albeit less ostentatious. But still, people put a lot of thought into it.

This actually reminded me of something I experienced. I went to Catholic school and we weren’t allowed to wear makeup or nail polish. I also have a condition that causes me to need to use a wheelchair. One day I went to school wearing makeup. I got called to the principal‘s office and asked, “Do you need to wear makeup because of your condition?” I didn’t know what to say, but I thought saying yes was less likely to get me in trouble, so I cautiously said, “….ummm…yeahhhh?…” The principle said, “Okay, you can keep wearing it then.” I’ve thought about it from time to time, and even as an adult, I understood why my Catholic School would think having a condition would mean I would to wear makeup. Now I am seriously wondering if this Catholic school of thought was passed down all the way until the 21st century!

@@findingbeautyinthepain8965 Let me guess: The principal was a man, right? That's an attitude of older men: I don't know anything about women's bodies and I don't want to because bodies are disgusting if you look too closely and women's issues are women's issues. This goes along the lines of pupils during PE claiming to get their period twice a month to more often. No elderly guy will ever ask for details if you say: It's a women's issue.

I think I might have some insight into the "bathing spreads disease", based off of how we lived when I was a kid. There was a wooden "thub" just like the one u have there, big wooden thing. You would then get water from the well and heat it up on the stove, it would take several really large pots of boiling water to get enough to mix it into body friendly temperature. This in fact is such a laborious process that everyone would just wash in turn in the same water, it would be incredibly resource and time consuming to change out the water. After you're done soaking and scrubbing you'd stand up and rinse of with unspoiled water, and then the next person goes in. In fact me and my brother were small enough to bathe together. Now the washing your hands part really isn't that hard, cold water will do, if you had some bigger work to do which would result in a bunch of people having dirty hands you could also just heat up a bit of water and mix it into warm water in a bucket. So yeah, while they might not have been aware of the microscopic world, if you have a disease that causes nasty deformations to your skin, which shed or leak bile when disturbed, then it's quite apparent that you're getting into contact with it if you share the bath water, so in a weird way I can see why some people might have reached such a conclusion.

even my family would reuse bathwater. usually my sibling and i would bathe together, and sometimes after our mother used the bathwater. i even recall sharing baths with other kids, some i barely knew, being normal up until the 2000s. obviously at some point you grow too tall to fit in the tub together, but there also appears to be some prudish concepts for anything involving nudity. people seem to care too much for their appearances or think anyone will actually remember or pay attention to what they look like without clothing. anyway, if one kid was sick, the other was bound to catch it. and we definitely gave lice to each other.

It's also good to point out that many times when something is recorded in histories it is usually something out of the ordinary. People very seldomly recorded facts that were common knowledge. An interesting bit of information that could maybe apply to the Medieval people being dirty stereotype, that also applied to some places in the early 1900s was people may have bathed in the river. In my state of Minnesota there was a public "bathhouse"on an Island in our capital city, that was part of the Mississippi River. Many Butcher shops dumped things in the river and garbage as well, some of that ended up in the area people bathed. Therefore, it wasn't actually cleaner then just washing in the rain or something.

Educator is the right word. I am not really into medieval history or fantasy. But I watched the whole video. And I have got to say, if Shad or Mrs Rosalie were my teachers, I'd pay more attention in school. I enjoy history in so much as events. But the lifestyle or times gone and to realise they were humans like us and had all the needs that we do despite us being seperated from them by aeons is really something that can blow your mind.

I love how she pronounces lavabo/lave bowl (I assume the second method of writing coming from "laver" [French for washing] and well, Bowl) as "lay-va-bow" I mean, in Flemish we still refer to them as lavabo, but we pronounce it as "la-va-bow" (like lava, but with 'a' sound) Also, it sounds like there's a lot of similarities between medieval European bathhouses and the Asian Soaplands.

One of the best scenes I've seen depicting medieval bathing was from the Joan of Arc movie with Mila Jovovich. It takes a lot of liberties with historical accuracy, but there's one scene where people are talking to the king while he's just relaxing in his bath and it's not a private room. There's at least half a dozen servants and attendants in the space.

I just jumped from the previous video with Rosalie to this one, and previously when the comment about undergarments came up it got me thinking. How did women "relieve themselves" in the medieval period? Men just open their fly or drop their trousers and get to it. Meanwhile its not quite so simple for women. But with dresses being the standard fashion of that time, that would just exacerbate their situation.
