That's what's so funny about French and English. Many similar words do mean the same, but then we have word pairs that have drifted significantly apart, despite their similarities in written form. A similar pickle here in Romania, where the language has been so severely influenced by Greek/Turkish and Slavic that speakers of other Romance languages can barely keep up: amor became dragoste, amici became prieteni, amare became a iubi, etc.

I've been in this kind of situation before. My first love was a Mexican boy who works with me. I had never had a romantic connection with anyone, but I vividly remember feeling the chemistry almost immediately upon meeting him. He ended up being my first kiss at 22 years old. I tried to learn Spanish so I could talk to him without using google translate, but obviously that's a long process, so the language barrier was ultimately one of the reasons we didn't work out. However, the time we spent together was beautiful. He was so gentle and sweet, funny and full of passion. I'm both grateful and sad that I still have to work with him. On the one hand, we parted ways amicably, so I'm happy to see him. Yet it's hard to see him knowing he's moved on and I haven't. Sorry if this is super sappy, seeing this just reminded me of my own story, so I wanted to share.

I fell in love with my fiance in Mexico. She was one of the first 2 people I met as i landed at the airport. Shes from Guatemala, and I'm from the states. Our first words were "Do you speak Spanish" "Yo nO hAblO EspAnoL." We didnt speak each others languages at all. I liked her within 2 weeks, but she didn't feel the same at first, but it took 6 months working together, learning, and speaking each others languages until we started to date.1 year and a half after we first met and we speak in both languages, and help others with translation from time to time. Never thought I'd be living in Mexico speaking in their native tongue after such a short amount of time.

The reason I stopped saying that one was the look on my moms boyfriends face when she said it to him at dinner. He’s black, she’s Trinidadian, and my bio dad is Jewish so for me and my siblings the silence was loud. My mom had no clue, and I remember my oldest sister trying so hard to explain lightly. They didn’t stay together, but Terrence is in mine and my sisters lives to this day❤️😅 Hope this story makes you laugh😂😇

Reminds me of Amigo. An American soldier and a poor Filipina, though they're minor characters. Filipina didn't talk to him, but he'd talk. One time Filipina was pounding rice and he was talking, he told her "you're very pretty". During the town fiesta, she gave him a home-made necklace.

Hhhhm so the script was flawed... Philippine people speak English. It's the country's one of two official languages: FILIPINO AND ENGLISH.😊

@@pingyu5141Definitely not during the American-Philippine War. As far as I know they were more keen on speaking Spanish at the time but not as good as their English after the war. Safe to say they started speaking American English during the war but not necessarily fluent at it.

@@pingyu5141he said American soldier in a far flung province. She could be a farmer lass .. Not all speaks English during WWII, compared now with English as a mode of instructions in schools... Now a days no US soldiers would go to a farm even American tourists... Unlike the 50's many Filipinas were left behind with a fil-americam child.😠

It's a true story from Flyboys American French n Canadian pilots fighting for Lafayette Escadrille French Air Force fighting the German Luftwaffe. They met each other during WW1 and fell in love but never met again after war was over. I loved the movie. My other WWI air combat favorites are Blue Max Aces High Von Richtofen n Brown and Red Baron. There were only 2 Aces from my country India during WW1 fighting n flying for British Royal Air Force fighting the Germans. Hello from India 🇮🇳
