@@alexanderlyon1215 Japanese reports later confirmed that, yes, Doss did indeed administer medical aid to some injured Japanese soldiers as well. Desmond didn't see anyone as enemies, he just saw people who were hurt and needed help. He is the best example I've ever seen of someone actually leading an honest Christian life. He didn't just talk the talk like so many do today, Desmond walked the walk. Truly an inspiration!

there is more to Desmond Doss' story. after he was put on the stretcher, he rolled off of it and insisted that they should take another wounded man instead, which they did. later, as he was waiting for a stretcher Desmond's left arm was hit by sniper fire, shattering the bone, but he was able to crawl to safety. Mel Gibson left those parts out of the movie because he didn't think people would believe it.

What’s crazy is that Desmond thought he dragged about 50 guys but sources say it was closer to 100. For the sake of the movie they agreed on meeting in the middle and saying 75.

Actually Desmond doss saved an estimated amount was just over 100 by the soldiers themselves! But Desmond was always saying “no only about 50! But when the soldiers kept telling him 100! They all came to the conclusion and split the difference! 75! Long before the movie was even being made!

Whats even crazier about this story, is that they fought several battles after Dawe's iconic and heroic actions on hacksaw and everytime they had dawes pray for their unit. Not a single man was lost for any of those battles. This scene here depicts the only time after those events that they didn't have time for dawes to pray for them and as a result he was injured along with several other men in the unit.

There’s an old saying that “there are no atheists in foxholes or tanks“, but it goes much deeper than that. I bought Desmond‘s autobiography for my teenage daughter many years ago and there is absolutely no way to just talk about him as a “man“ he must be spoken of as a Christian man as it was his faith in the reality of God that fueled his actions. Loved all of those different reactions, thanks

Some notes they took out of the movie: #1 Doss did other stuff BEFORE Hacksaw. So much so that he was awarded the Bronze star with V for Valor TWICE. #2 He had close to 20 pieces of shrapnel from the grenade in his body. #3 He kept rolling off the litter to get other troops evacuated before him. As he waited for the litter he would crawl towards the cliff face #4 While being carried a sniper shattered his arm. He didn't say anything until AFTER they got him down. #5 He actually wanted to return to his unit after Hacksaw. It took his CO, LT and other troops to tell him to go home. #6 He never wanted the MoH. He was quoted as saying "I just did my job. The guys who didn't make it home deserve this more than me." #7 The guy from NYC who got hit in the face said that when he invited Doss to his wedding Doss joked with him "Guess you found a girl that could deal with that face".

Japanese commanding officers would commit ritual suicide after losing a battle rather than surrendering... It was part of the ancient Samurai ceremonial protocol. And they would do it just as shown in that scene, following a very detailed and exacting procedure. And our combat medics would treat and care for the Japanese wounded if necessary, even though Japanese troops consistently targeted them on the battlefield. This movie is accurate where historic value is concerned... Great job by Mel Gibson!

75 lives and 4 of those were Japanese. This man was the epitome of Proverbs 16:7 When a man's ways please the LORD, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. Also he was the living proof of the Psalms 23:1-6 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

In WWII the Japanese lived by Bushido. The officers saw themselves as Samurai so to a Samurai defeat in battle is a disgrace so Sepuku was performed as a way to keep his honor intact from defeat. A lot of Japanese would fake surrender as to them the most glorious death is the one where you take as many enemies with you.

Strong young men go to war, too often at the requirement of weak old men who can't explain to the fathers and mothers, daughters, sons and wives why their loved ones will never return. For what? Religious zeal? Economics? Politics? No, if one asks me, it's all about hate and greed. Especially in our present enlightened, advanced, civilized age. World War 2 never really ended, it turned a profit, so they just changed the venue and added some different music. But like all sequels, it's a weak imitation of what was the only noble effort to stop an evil.
