I can picture these guys singing under a viaduct with a street lamp as the only light and a 50 gallon drum with a fire burning in it to keep them warm on a cold night. By 1961 Dion, and the Belmonts parted ways cause he went solo. The group you here with him on 'Run Around Sue' were called the Del-Satins. He used them mostly in his early solo career. Years later he got back together with the Belmonts briefly.

This song is from the Doo Wop era. Lots of groups, lots of great songs. Listen to Little Anthony & The Imperials (Tears On My Pillow is my favorite), The Flamingos (I Only Have Eyes For You), The Platters (Only You), The Skyliners (Since I Don't Have You). Just a small sampling. Another song I think you'd enjoy, R&B rather than Doo Wop, is Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me by Mel Carter. So much wonderful music to hear from so many genres.

When Lou Reed inducted Dion into the R&R Hall of Fame, he called him one of the great voices in rock history. Well said. Like many others, his career was disrupted by his heroin addiction in the ‘60s. Who knows what he would have achieved? He’s still recording in his 80s.

I grew up in the 70s during the 50s revival. Happy Days was on tv and there were several 50s inspired groups who had hits on the UK charts. So I’ve always been a fan of the 50s sound.

Dion has said the group vocals at the very beginning and much through the song was meant to intimate horns (trumpets etc) as they were familiar to and liked a horn band. Listen to it again see it you hear horns..... or at the very least the cadence of horns. In fact, the "wop- wop -wop wop wop " in this song is an imitation of a snare drum. Actually, at lot of background vocals on Doo-Wop songs were just vocal imitations of instruments. Doo-Wop originated on the streets of cities with friends getting together to sing. Since they had no instrument backup, they sang the instruments part... even with the songs they made up

The group started as Dion and the Belmonts, then Dion went solo, but still his songs usually had backup singers. The Belmonts continued without Dion too, but only had a couple minor hits. Dion's "The Wanderer" was #1 in the US and his biggest UK hit at #10.

You should check out some performances by the most famous and talented tribute act/cover band of all time, Sha Na Na. What they essentially did was take every "voice" and "sound" from the 50's and put them all together in one band. Every cover they did was perfect. They even got their own TV show in the 70's

The great Dion and the Belmonts split up in 1960. I remember where I was when I heard about it. Yikes! Dion then went solo, but was backed by another group named the Del-Satins. Dion & the Belmonts had a sound made unique by their incredible falsetto tenor Angelo D'Aleo. Those were the days my friend.

Early days before Dion DiMucci became a solo artist. This time (late 50s) was the prime "Doo-Wop" era. There were so many vocal groups, just like these guys. While Doo-wop was indeed "Rock and Roll, it was almost it's own little genre of 50s Rock and Roll. Just like "Heavy Metal" is considered Rock, it's a different style of Rock, than say, "Classic Rock" of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, etc. I really enjoy the vocal harmonies that is Doo-wop music. This song was released May 5, 1958, which is 5 months and 5 days before I was born on Oct. 10, 1958. I’m sure that my Mom played this and many other songs while in the womb, as I love all songs from the ‘50’s.

BUT, BUT, BUT, and its a big but, you first have to look at the progenitors. 1st. The Ink Spots, and then and most importantly the incredible, the legendary Mills Brothers.
