This style is called "Doo-wop." This recording was made when I was in eighth grade. We were dancing the jitterbug, wearing straight skirts and sweaters as blouses, and saddle oxfords with bobby sox. If you want to see some dancing from the times, watch some of Dick Clark's American Bandstand shows.

My mom was a junior in high school when this song was released. She's 79 and just recovered from covid-19 last month.

Dion was included in the ill-fated Winter Dance Party with Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper. He was invited to fly but refused because he could not rationalize spending $36 to fly since that was his parents monthly rent. He was only 19 at the time. He went on to marry his Sue in 1963 and they are still together. He us now 81.

This is on the Christine soundtrack. There was a Motown soundtrack released with all the rock and roll from her radio. I have the LP.

Just last night "Peggy Sue Got Married" was on TV, they sang this song among many other in it. I love the movie.

When I was working in New York City ages and ages ago back in 1980, I had a friend I worked with who loved Doo Wop. I remember going with her to a concert at Madison Square Garden. It was a brunch of Doo Woo groups, and the show was called “Doo Wop at the Garden”. The group I remember most was the Teenagers. Frankie Lymon had been gone for years, and they had a girl singer to sing his parts. The group was still awesome. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons also fell into the Doo Wop genre. Great stuff. 💜

A much later Dion banger from the ‘90s is “King of the New York Streets” Lou Reed inducted Dion into the Rock Hall of Fame, called him one of the greatest singers of the r&r era.

As an FYI, Brother Darryl (Hall) had a R&B/Doo Wop band called the Temptones and competed against John Hall's band, The Masters (R&B) in a battle of the bands when a fight broke out between fraternities/street gangs. The two of them escaped the hostilities and formed Darryl Hall and John Oates. Doo Wop is an important part in the evolution of Rock/Pop music as many acts started with Doo Wop.

I'm 36 and I freaking LOVE doo wop. Before I started popping my kids out we used to have decade parties and had a couple sock hops and they were the best. Nothing like 20 somethings in poodle skirts getting drunk off their asses dancing to these classics.

Dion himself has said that what you see with Dion and the Belmonts is the sound of the black R&B vocal groups that he loved, filtered through an Italian neighborhood. As many groups of the day will tell you, it all started with the earlier black groups. The Orioles, Ravens, Five Keys, Clovers, Moonglows, The best groups were famous for their ballads. Check out "My Reverie" by the Larks (1951) , "Count Every Star" by the Ravens (1950), and the Orioles "I miss you so" (1951) as great examples of ballads from the early 1950s and the dawn of doo-wop. A later good one is the Hollywood Saxons' 1957, "Is it true".

True American genre - some of the greatest music of the 20th century and should be treated as such. These guys were particularly talented - all from The Bronx. The Belmonts were GREAT doo woppers! Song is STILL badass!

"Belmonts" came from Belmont Avenue in the Bronx, they were a neighborhood band -my old neighborhood- although I was born a few years later. A few years after that, about two miles away Hip Hop was born. The Bronx, representing musically in all possible styles, to the whole wide world.
