Becky put a small mailbox in the middle of your garden and use is to store some of your small, hand-held garden tools and a couple of pairs of gloves. That way you don't have to go all the way back up the hill to the big shed for those small items. If you get a white mailbox you can decorate the outside of the mailbox so it will also be a pretty decorative item in the garden.

My Moth3er is 95 year old Master gardener. She watched this episode with me, and said you need to get your rotation chart in place. She said you don't plant the same things in the same place, but move them around. She liked your layout, and agreed with your deer fence and thought it was all very "pretty". A few hours later we were just sitting together and she said, "Does your friend Becky compost her coffee and egg grounds?" I told her I thought you composed them but I wasn't sure. She said "Well next time you speak to her remind her they are very good for her garden also", I promised her I would, so here it is. Of course, we are in the deep South (Screven & Richmond County, Georgia) I didn't try to explain to her tha you lived in Oregon ... She is a jewel! I thought you'd appreciate her insight..

Hi Becky! You can make your own ground chicken or turkey in the food processor. It’s a lot cheaper than buying it already ground up, especially if you get it on sale. Whether it’s turkey or chicken, white meat or dark meat. Just pulse it until you have your preferred texture. Winner winner ground chicken dinner! Enjoy!

Garden answers has some very good videos On drip irrigation. She has several different methods and several videos. She goes step-by-step on how to do it. It's very clear and very concise. She shows you the equipment she uses and step by step how to do it. She shows pots and raised beds.

I am wondering if having the irrigation on top of the plastic landscape fabric is hampering the water getting to the plants fully? If the plants aren’t getting enough water they won’t be able to take up the nutrients as well either.

Hi Becky, I found a product made near where I live in Ireland its called Super Soil. Honestly here where we've moved to the soil is awful but I've been using super soil on the beds and frankly I've never seen plants grow so fast. They also do free delivery worldwide. It's basically freeze dried microbes and a 1 kilo bag is enough to do 10 acres of land. I have used it double strength on my beds and it is working miracles right now. I'm also using wine cap mushroom mycelium which not only gives us a "free" harvest but also helps alot with soil health. Have fun gardening :)

I was making chap stick today so I used my lemon balm and made it her way 😳 oh it’s velvety and super nice. I was pleased with it and the first time in years that I didn’t make the one I always do. Hi Becky, have you thought of maybe putting a small water proof box down there by the garden beds to keep some garden scissors, garden knife and maybe a small garden shovel in it so when you need them, that they are already down there.

Hi Becky, Look into worm composte. I use worm composte from my worm bins and it’s like magic. My veggies grow like crazy. Best thing ever. Worm bins are cheap, easy to maintain and absolutely worth it when it comes to gardening. Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹

Hi Becky, you can leave your broccoli in the garden after you harvest the main head. Little broccoli will grow under each leaf for a long time if you keep it picked.😊

I had once made strawberry preserves and put in tiny diced red beets. They took on the strawberry taste and gave it a more complex flavor. It also gave it a beautiful color and added nutrients

Tip for going to collect horse manure. Keep the bags from the compost you just bought and fill them with the horse manure. That way they are easy to move and keeps your truck cleaner!

We were told by the farm bureau that horse manure has the least benefits of all manures. I put chicken manure in small doses into and around my garden. I did try horse manure and grass grew in the pieces that did not break down. You live and you learn with gardening ,

Hey Becky, Nice video. I saw that at the chickies there are a lot of narrow-leaf plantain. Those are amazing herbs for cough. Either as tea or syrup. I think it would be good to look around your land what herbs you can collect and use in the winter. It's free and amazing stuff to learn.

They have pop-up bags you can buy for the garden to put your scraps, weeds, and whatever else in. It's easy to carry around and saves you on having to pick up piles. I bought a pop-up hamper at a yard sale and I'm using that which is just like the one you can buy for the garden.

Hi Becky! Probably an unwanted tip for your mascara (but I was pleasantly surprised once I stopped doing it!) - pumping it before you put it on actually pushes air into the tube and can make your mascara dry out quicker!

I have been so interested in your fabric experiment and how your plants have struggled. After watching this, I feel like its way way too much crazy work and having to add too much fert. I did an experiment with chopped hay this year and its amazing for weed supression and is like 2 minutes to apply and a breeze to work around.

@@athomewithjennywhen you water it it becomes compacted and wont blow away. It'll only blow away if you live in a dry climate and let it completely dry out.

Hi Becky, we just changed our beds to a drip system like the tapes that Living Traditions uses. It has no need for little water heads (that blow off with water pressure changes. It’s not too expensive and wow do I enjoy them. I like to turn them on low and go for as long as each bed needs. These have been so much easier to take care of. We’ve used the fabric in our beds with the watering hoses clamped in a straight line under the fabric. The water drips right into the soil and only a once in a while easy to pull weeds. This has been the best arrangement for us. It’s so much fun watching you, you encourage me to keep going. Your young attitude feeds my 72 year old soul to keep going! Thank you. 💕 one for you and one for little acre. P.S. the “we” is a royal we - my kids did the beds all I do is keep an eye on them and water where needed!😅

Tip for you regarding beets: Grow them since they grow fast and you can use the greens as well as the beet itself, then freeze dry the beet and powder it to add to smoothies and such for the added nutrition boost. A great way to nitrogen-fix your soil is to plant beans and other "nitrogen-fixers", so that second bed will have a much better nitrogen level for you next year (or in the fall if you plant again there)

I'm not a very beet person either but I found roasted beets were something I could do mixed with other roasted veggies plus the dogs like them...I will say I was not prepared for the maroon poo and had a bit of a heart attack out walking the dog. Then I laughed like a Minnesota loon when I realized what I had caused by feeding my lab roasted beets. Yikes. In small amounts in salads beets are good and good for us. I was a beet hater and now I see their place...roasted.

How do you get beets to grow fast? Mine take forever.

@@lilycardoso4679 Beets, on average, grow much faster than other crops, about 45-60 days, as opposed to things like peppers, tomatoes, corn, etc which are usually over 90 days minimum. So I guess it depends on your definition of fast. You can start harvesting the greens for sure by 30 days.

Hi Becky. About beets. We shred them in the food processor and eat them raw on salads. I'm telling you, it's an absolute game changer! You won't believe how different they taste raw. Fun day in the garden, Becky! As you were gathering food for your big cook day tomorrow, you mentioned that you spent under $40. But I was thinking it would be really interesting if you were to add up your whole year of food stuffs and divide by 12 to see what you spend each month. This would include whole pig, 1/2 a cow (or whatever you buy), your plants and seeds, soil amendments and such! I think it would be fun bc I live in a condo with no yard and can’t grow anything. But I do support farmers markets and try to buy organic foods. I love Azure Standard, but only need to buy about twice a year. I’m going to do the same thing and see what my monthly average $$ is. Hi Becky. I've noticed that you have an excessive amount of ants in most of your raised beds. To get rid of them in all beds, try to sprinkle ground cinnamon or cayenne pepper around your plants. This may help repel, but not injure, ants.

We’ve been in our place now for over 10 years, and I had major problems with them making their homes in my plant pots. So I sprinkled cinnamon around all my pots, I’ve only resettle noticed some ant activity. It worked for me.

You could have ground up that chicken in a food processor to replace the ground chicken that you forgot to buy. Also, marmalade is so easy to make. So yes, you can definitely make your own. Video idea!😊

Tip: I have an old mailbox in my garden, I keep a pair of gloves, trowel, harvest scissors, and reusable grocery bags in there. I am set to snip, dig, and harvest without having to run back to the shed or garage and my supplies are in a waterproof container and handy.

Make sure to put it on the beds in the fall. Let it set over winter. Chicken poop is very hot, unless it sets for a while.

If you put a good sized mailbox in your garden, you can leave some tools and gloves in it. I thought of that when you were trying to twist the top off old plants. My husband built me a cute little red box with a green roof with a door on front with a hook for closing. Then he attached it to a ‘t’ post.

Hi Becky, your garden and yard is so pretty! Had a thought, some nice stainless steel trash cans in a few areas might come in really handy. Few for things feed to chicken and few for trash. The trash ones you could use trash bags to make them easy to empty. You could also use one to store things like knife etc to make it easy since it's a hike back to your house to get them. The stainless would look nice and not blow away in the wind. Just a thought☺

Hi Becky! Why pulling up the broccoli? You can harvest from them the whole summer aaand, the plant, you can eat that to, make a soup of the steem (save it in the freezer for a cold fall lunch) and fry the leaves and eat with an omelett or pasta.

You should find rabbit poop to amend the beds, it doesn't have to break down before using. Lots of good nitrogen. Also, for your tomatoes, I put a heaping tablespoon of Epsom salt for gardening with a heaping tablespoon of bone meal. I get majorly large tomatoes and peppers doing this. Or dissolve the epsom salt in water and feed it every two or three weeks.

What I did this year was firmly press them on the soil then sprinkle soil on top. Best carrot germination EVER! I HAVE TRIED MANY TIMES.

You’ve definitely inspired me to expand my garden this year! I now have five fruit trees, seven berry bushes, a whole herb garden area, but unfortunately, the area that I planted all my vegetables and beans is being enjoyed regularly by a groundhog, despite my best efforts of deterring him. The one thing that works is sprinkling cayenne pepper all over, but as soon as it rains, that washes it away, and that chubby little fellow hurries out and eats everything. He’s eating my squash, my broccoli, my cabbage, beans, cucumbers. Very disheartening, but it’s just challenges me to figure this out.

For your irrigation you should use thicker black soaker hose. Ours comes in at the end and coils in three ovals and it soaks the ground and can be a quicker time each cycle.

Today at Senior Day we each received 2 pints of blueberries, so many did not want theirs and they know I make pies….. I ended up with 10! Already washed and freezing……

I think my opinion ask questions before buying anything a lot of people have experience in this, slow down some, like you said can’t do it all, we all try too! Sometimes it put us in a crunch! Just saying just a friendly advice!! One day at a time, SLOW DOWN!

Having vege gardens for more than 65 years in my experience veges don’t do well with weed mat we put down cardboard then a layer of compost then a layer of hay no other nutrients needed other than a sprinkling of blood and bone. Also the brassicas don’t do well in hot weather. There is a chap called Charles Dowding on you tube who has invaluable tips I don’t know if you read what we write to you but I want to assure you I am not being critical just hoping to help you. Look up Charles it will change your life! Xx

Becky you mentioning horse manure! We got a local farmer deliver a dump truck load of horse manure one year. It was still very liquid. He started to drive across our garden to dump as he drove across but the bed ended up dumping in one place. I can actually say I have shoveled shiiit!!!! It took a while but after all the work spreading and flinging it all across our garden we ended up having the best garden ever! I had cabbages that were 15 and 20 lbs each. I had planted 200 OS cross a hybrid variety cabbage. Our potatoes were so big that one served two people. I made French fries and I could hardly hold it to peel it was so large. I would definitely suggest cow or horse manure if you can get it.

Fun with beets.... We tried this with my book club once because we all planted beets in our gardens. We had a beet fest. We contributed our fully realized recipes at a crazy dinner. Beet appetizers, borscht, beet ice cream, you name it! Weird and fun... and now some of us even eat then more often. 😅

My thoughts on your garden- I had an organic gardening friend who would produce the smallest vegetables I have ever ween because they were not watering their garden enough. Maybe raised beds dry out faster? Also, the black fabric is probably raising the temp of your beds too high for some of the vegetables. Just a thought!

Hi Becky! Love your videos! I have one small concern... when you were down in your basement pantry (34;19) there is one very full shelf (tomato products I think) that looks like it may be sagging toward the middle. Please check on that. I would hate to see you lose all that product and hard work.

Becky you should make sure you plant flowers that attract the pollinators your plants need… some pollinate with bees, flies, butterflies, etc. and if you put the types of flowers that attract the correct pollinators it will help your squash, zucchini’s, cucumber etc

Becky - get some FELCO clippers - they are for gardening and come in different hand sizes that are perfect for clipping broccoli/cauliflower, etc.

I love your garden and yellow tomatoes are the only ones I can eat so it makes my heart happy to see them being grown. Hearing you talk about the BLT’s reminded me of a joke my son did once. I’m a Muslim, so I don’t eat bacon, and I’m allergic to something in red tomatoes. One day my son was going out to pick up dinner and asked what I wanted. While I was writing it down he said, “Let me guess, you want a BLT hold the B and the T!” and then he just rolled laughing so hard. 😂😂😂

Perhaps the lycopene in red tomatoes is causing your issues. Yellow tomatoes do not contain lycopene and should therefore be ideal for your diet. Just learned this recently. Lycopene is what gives thing like tomatoes and red grapefruit their pink/red color. Hope this helps!

Becky, you need pop up bags in your garden. When you pull foliage, you drop in the lightweight bag and take/dump to chickens. They’re a game changer. We buy ours at Home Depot.

I make a comfrey tea to use as a fertilizer in the vegetable garden and on the berry crops as well. Seems to work really well.

Find out if any hay the steers are fed has been sprayed with anything. That is generally where the grayzon issue has started. You just want to be careful as it can’t take at least 2 years to work out of compost

When you open a block of cheese you can cut what you don't use into the size portions you usually use and repackage individually with seal-a- meal. It will last the same as the original unopened package of cheese

Hey Becky! I'm so excited to sew your garden doing so well! I know that must have been stressful there for a minute. I had an idea for a video I would love to see you do sometime. I love watching favorites videos and I was thinking if you did them quarterly or seasonally it wouldn't be a huge weekly or monthly thing to keep track of and it would give you plenty of time to test things out and know your opinions. I'd be interested in anything you wanted to share, be it home stuff, garden stuff, recipes or even podcast or audio books you enjoy. ❤️

Mama-tea Sorry to contradict you but I'm in Scotland too and we have always eaten beetroot pickled, roasted, plain boiled and grated raw for salads as do many many people I know. Perhaps you have never tried anything but pickles but it's dangerous to qualify a nation's tastes solely based on you own family tastes Recently I have also dehydrated the beers and it's root powdered the root left beers in chunks for future use.

Marmelade! Just made some from 9 tangerines that i just wasn't eating. Plus 1 stale lime. Cut them up real fine, with some water, some sugar, a stick of cinnamon and a few cloves for 10 minutes in the instant pot. And then sautéed them with the rest of the sugar untill done. Wonderful stuff!

That concealer has great coverage and not fussy. Would you share the brand? I rarely use it because it settles in fine lines or gets cakey. I probably need to use it. 😅😊😂

Thank you so much for your videos!!! You have given me encouragement to try cooking again , as I have been a failure for many years. Things are starting to turn out better, I’m starting to trust my gut instincts on what a dish needs, and I’m growing okay with a mistake now because sometimes mistakes make masterpieces. Plus, I just had my second child at 40 years old last year, so you gave me many videos to watch through many long nights a few months ago.

Have you heard about the herbicides that have been used growing hay and then feed to cows? There's a video I saw here on YT where a man put goat manure on his small garden. One by one his plants would suddenly wilt and die. He discovered it was what he fed his goats that caused it. It was hay that had been sprayed with a weed killer. I would have never thought of that myself. But it made me aware of one more thing to think about when adding amendments to my garden.

I love my drip tape system from drip depot. It was so easy to install and the customer service is amazing. I had so many questions and they helped me through everything. I would tie it with laying landscape fabric with making my gardening life more enjoyable.

What a wonderful hobby you have in gardening. No only to you get delicious food, it is something you totally enjoy. I order 5 pounds of frozen broccoli from Azure every month or so and call it good. We used to garden a lot but after adding up all the costs, we just order from Azure. (after all we are in our 70's)

What about using your chickens waste as some compost? If you use wood shavings as their bedding you could just compost that and use that as a really good fertilizer.

I absolutely love your videos! I cant wait for the new ones to pop up! But i go back and get watch others if i remember that there is something in them i need to make note of! We recently had to downsize due to my husbands health, we had 2 acres and my garden was about a half acre! We are now on a small 1/4 acre on the lake, the ground is rocky and lots of clay! So ive been doing container gardening! Along with my 8 girls! I love fresh eggs! Its a smaller scale, but im still able to do something! And i learn so much from you! You are a pleasure to watch, your personality is so friendly, it just makes watching and learning so much fun! Thank you for being you and sharing with us!!!

Watching you struggle pulling those roots out, a hori hori would be handy. I've also started carrying around a Leatherman multi-tool so I have a knife, pliers, and screwdrivers on me. 😊

I cover my carrot seeds with a clear shower curtain. It holds the moisture and I can see easily when they sprout.

Love beets! I boil them which makes the skin easier to peel off. Slice them thin and pour balsamic vinegar and olive oil on them. Garnish with green onions and sunflower seeds! One of my favorite salads
