Great breakdown, but how the Celtics played had very little if anything to do with how the Mavs played MIN. Celtics are a matchup nightmare for Dallas and owned them all year. Joe has greatly improved as a coach, especially at adjustments and matchups.

Never realized how strong JB is. Every year his game improves, coming closer and closer to matching his physical gifts. Fast, strong, quick, super athletic, disciplined, poised, and long. He's young, too. Scary to see what he will be in five years.

Luka was okay on ball, and even had a few pokes. It's his off ball defense, complete lack of rotation and just ball watching.

This is how Luka gets his high rebound numbers. Likes to stick around the basket and not rotate so he can pad his stats

Liked the breakdown but i think the idea to target Luka on defence was executed (and executed well btw.) in the Celtics last regular season game against Dallas, so i don't think the DAL-MIN series was the main reason why we saw that focus on offence. The befenits which you pointed out well remain the same anyways. I'm exited for game 2. I kinda hoped to see in game 1 a KP comeback that gave flashbacks of his first game for us since to some extend the circumstances were kinda similar in that KP had something to prove. Since i got that for game 2 i would love to see some form of JT's shot is faling from the get go and we dumpster the Mavs😅.

Luka is a great scorer but he's not the best player in the NBA. Only a 2 way player deserves that title. This dude can't play D so he's just plain lazy on the defensive side of the ball. The Celtics won't sweep Dallas but they will beat them.

Screens are not of prime importance because they create mismatches. Also, targeting Luka or any other player is best done off the dribble or with an isolation entry pass. So, what is the main function of a screen? To ground and pound. Two defensive players have to communicate, make a choice as to who goes under, who goes over, both go over, both go under. Jrue Holiday is a master at reading picks. And he has taught the other Celtic how to read picks. If one reads the roll or the action off the pick those reads are too late. The pick has to be pre-read. Then adjust if The pre-read is wrong. The player setting the pick can guide the ball to the right, guide the left ball to the left, set a back blind pick or forward blind pick for a jump shot, or set a punishment pick to take the fight to a defender, or set a light offensive pick to roll. There is more to it than match ups. Luka does not read picks. Luka does not anticipate picks prior to contact. Luka is they type of guy who yells switch every time on the pre-pick read. He does not want to get caught up in the mix. If I were Luka I would take 6 fouls blowing up the pick man and grabbing the ball before the read can be made like a Jrue Holiday. You know fight fire with 🔥 fire. If I were Jason Kid I would use 24 fouls busting up all picks. I would not stop the setting of picks but I would be able to jam guides and rolls. (There is not a damn thing that can be done to stop a screen for a jump shot today.) No man is so vital that he must leave all six fouls in his vest pocket. Jrue Holiday is the best player in the NBA playing right now. Again playing right now because if popcorn falls on the floor with a cup of the number two soft drink in America (Dr. Pepper) also falling Jrue Holiday will not stop play to look for a mop boy and a ref. He is going to steal the ball during the corn fall and score before the spill stains the floor. Great defenders force the screener in a direction to control, speed, direction and shot/shooter selection. Luka puts little to no contact on the pick man and the ballhandler Remember at least three players are within inches of each other on those plays. Luka grabbed no one. On the other hand, Jrue Holiday grabs the ball handler as he passes with one hand and spins the screener with the other hand. Because the players are within inches or body body the refs cannot see the hand fighting. You know the Eye of The Needle Defense. The players are in the eye of a needle so the refs cannot see shit! Luka on the other hand does nothing but stand a distance from the action awaiting the Second Coming. To Luka spacing is everything. Jason Kid will show the team how to control the action with one's 6 fouls. Kid was the master of reaching for a ball with the lead hand while grabbing the shorts with the off hand. Jrue Holiday will be the player he highlights in the film room. Last but not least picks can only work well when time is the only consideration. All other times the pick can be blown up before a shooter gets into his shooting motion by a Jrue Holiday. That means you pick. Love your detail analysis. Celtics absolutely destroyed Dallas 3 weeks after their season changing trade 138-110 while Luka had his triple double like he did before the trade in the previous matchup. If you look at all 3 games objectively, one thing becomes crystal clear: Celtics are a bad matchup for the Mavericks. It’s 6 elite players for the Celtics versus 2 elite players for the Mavericks. That’s even more of a math advantage for the Cs than the 3s vs 2s pointers. Luka is a great offensive weapon and a defensive liability. Always has been. Always will be. Exploiting that weakness for a full game is smart, for an entire series (remains to be seen) will be brilliant.

I didn’t see any matchups for Dallas to exploit really. Even the ones I thought they could like Al and KP got shutdown and when you’re getting that kind of defensive efforts from guys like a Sam Hauser. That’s a bought in, we’re here to win team. Maybe Dallas will stop switching Luka on D but, if you’re defending the p&r without switching you’re gonna get burned anyway so, we’ll see.

Luka is having the same issue JT did last year. He’s getting worn out. I’m not one to talk but I’m also not an NBA star, but Luka needs to get in better shape and get his endurance up.

Nah, I see Mavs winning game 2. Kyrie will be more aggressive first half. If Luka also plays like Luka this will create offense for the rest of the Mavs and their offensive flow won't be stagnant like in Game 1 when both start get going early. Defensively, I think MAVS should stay home. Force the drive, 2 is less than 3. MAVS are hard to beat when the two teams are going back and forth. So we'll see tomorrow.

Luka isn't even close to being the "best player in the NBA". He's a great 3-point shooter when he gets hot but as Jaylen Brown demonstrated last night, HE is the best player on the court. He made Luka a one-dimensional 3-jacker who needed 26 shots to get 28 points. He smacked down almost everything at the rim, he drained 3s, dished dimes and made posters of Kyrie and Gafford. How is that NOT the Best Player On The Court?
