The Beach Boys were one of the biggest bands in music history. They are among the 15 biggest selling artists selling more than 200 million records world wide. They were also one of 3 American acts that were not affected at all by The British Invasion (the other 2 were Elvis Presley and The Four Seasons). Their biggest hit is probably "Good Vibrations." My 2 personal favorite songs are "Surfer Girl" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice."

I mostly agree but I slightly disagree. The Beach Boys were slightly effected by the British Invasion. The Beatles had the top ten largely locked out much of the time. The Beach Boys were able to make the top ten frequently, but I don't think they ever achieved #1. Despite the competition, The Beatles and Beach Boys kept inspiring each other to make better and better music. The Four Seasons still had hits but they declined after the Beatles came. I think Elvis was already considered king at the time, so there's that. Roy Orbison, I believe, was the only American artist two reach #1 during the British Invasion and that was with "Oh, Pretty Woman" (which Robsquad needs to react to.)

@@heyhey1956 Not to start a disagreement but there's videos of them playing a lot of their early hits live. Brian used The Wrecking Crew for Pet Sounds but he might as well played the instruments himself as he directed every single note with all the perfectionism of Steely Dan. And Frank Zappa even remarked, paraphrasing, thank God Brian gave us Little Deuce Coupe.

@Ron Moll 100% very much a healthy competition. The British Invasion took nearly all of its roots from American blues and R&B, and to some extent, skiffle.

I was asked recently to give my top ten favorite songs for a Japanese radio station...I didn't think long and hard on it, but I popped that ["God Only Knows"] on the top of my list. [Thinks for a moment] It's very deep. [Quotes the lyrics to "God Only Knows"] Very emotional, always a bit of a choker for me, that one. This was a cover song. The original by The Regents was a hit that went to number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1961. The Beach Boys version went to number 2 in 1965. The Beach Boys were huge in the 60's. They held their own after the British Invasion with the Beatles coming on the scene in 1964. Their major hits were "Fun, Fun, Fun" "Surfin' Safari", "Surfin USA", "Surfer Girl", "Little Deuce Coupe", "California Girls", "I Get Around", "In My Room", "Help Me Rhonda", "Good Vibrations", "Sloop John B", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows", "Good Timing", "Kokomo", among others. They sold over 100 million records. All of their songs were famous, they had 4 number 1 hits, "I Get Around", "Good Vibrations", "Help Me Rhonda", and "Kokomo". I would say that "Good Vibrations" was their biggest and most famous song.

I went to a Joe Walsh concert in the early 70s, the Beach Boys were touring with him and played first. Never was that huge a BB fan but after I saw them, the amount of respect and appreciation I have for them as entertainers is 100 fold. They rocked Texas Stadium and vamped up the whole crowd that covered the football field as well as every seat in the house. Dennis Wilson started the set in a 3 piece suit but because he was working so hard, the hotter he got the more he took off. By the time their set was over, he was wearing Bermuda shorts and a wife beater! And the audience including myself were loving it! Truly the best show I ever saw and I've seen some great ones.

Not entirely true. Yes, it was off the cuff, but the party sounds were added later on. They were in the studio with another big group at the time, Jan and Dean (Little Old Lady From Pasadena) and they all recorded Barbra Ann right there. But again, the glass and party sounds were dubbed in a an after thought.

Tom Beyerlein's comment is correct. This is from their album "Beach Boys' Party!" which was a concept album as though they were casually playing acoustic songs at a party. They didn't have time for new material, all the songs are covers (including this one) except one Beach Boys medley. Dean Torrance sang co-lead on this. "Beach Boys' Party!" directly preceded "Pet Sounds". They released a box set not too long ago which includes the songs without all the party chatter.

According to the official beach boys story this wasn't a spur of the moment thing. It was rehearsed a lot and was sold as an impromptu song but it was anything but. Written by Brian Wilson the record company wanted to make them sound like they were still ordinary guys underneath all the fame etc. People bought the idea not knowing the truth.

The Beach Boys were huge. They were masters of this breezy, bouncy summer sound. I think that Good Vibrations, which I believe you've already done, is their masterpiece. They went to a new level with their 1966 album, Pet Sounds. God Only Knows would be a great reaction song. It's easy to underestimate the complexity of the Beach Boys sound, maybe because it feels so easy and fun. The tight harmonies are tricky and required a lot of corrdination. Brian Wilson was the brains behind the operation. He's a musical genius.

This is from their Party album, is basically just an album of the Beach Boys sitting around with some friends kinda goofing off. I recommend reacting to "God Only Knows" which showcases what happens when they put serious effort into their recording. The other named women are from other songs: "Peggy Sue" by Buddy Holly "Hello, Mary Lou" by Ricky Nelson "Betty Lue's Got A New Pair Of Shoes" by.... not sure who originally, but later by Eddie & The Cruisers 😉 The Beach Boys biggest hit was probably "Good Vibrations" which y'all have reacted to. In 1963, they had their first national hit with "Surfin' U.S.A.", beginning a string of top-ten singles that reflected a southern California youth culture of surfing, cars, and romance, dubbed the "California sound".

This is a remake of a '61 song by The Regents. The "Beach Boys Party" album it was on was contrived to deliver a contracted album while Brian was working on their "Pet Sounds" masterpiece. They recorded it in studio (with The Wrecking Crew), and then added the party sounds and ad libs to the completed tracks.

The Beach Boys and The Beatles were essentially in direct competition with each other. Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band was their response to Pet Sounds which is Brian Wilson’s masterpiece. The sixties was a great time to start listening to music! BTW, my mom, who just turned 89 last week, would have Bach and Scott Joplin on 8 track blaring all over the house while she was cleaning, lol. And I learned to enjoy their music too!

I collected all LPs and cassettes they ever put out and this song is from the Vinyl LP "Beach Boys Party". From about 1965. I saw the original group live at Notre Dame ,here, in Indiana back in 1973, where their roadie at the time (Jerry from Manchester ,England) came up into our seating area and we chatted for a while before the concert started. I also was in their warehouse studio out in California (Brother Records) back in 1975. Peace. (Check out Surf's Up LP/CD.) They were the biggest American band at the time the Beatles arrived in the mid '60s. They did world tours.

Great cover song by the Beach Boys. Barbara Ann was a song written by Fred Fassert and was first recorded by the Regents. Their version was released in 1961 and reached reached number 13. Barbara Ann is Fred Fassert his little sister. My favorite Beach Boy song is Kokomo. Their last number 1 hit. Their first number 1 song was "I Get Around". It took the Beach Boys 24 years and 4 months to get their next number 1 song. A couple of other favorites include God Only Knows and Sloop John B.

Kokomo (from the movie Cocktail with Tom Cruse), Good Vibrations, I Get Around and Help Me, Rhonda were their biggest hits all reaching #1 Most of their hits were from the 60s with a few in the 70s but Kokomo was their last hit and that came in 1988. Jan & Dean were just like the Beach Boys as they both pioneered that California Surf music sound. Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys actually co-wrote at least three of their hits with Jan Berry.

The Beach Boys were absolutely huge in the 60s and became even bigger after. They were basically The Beatles of The United States, and The Beatles and Beach Boys had a friendly rivalry back in the day. Paul McCartney believes that Brian Wilson wrote the most beautiful love song ever when he wrote God Only Knows. And The Beach Boys album "Pet Sounds" was a major influence on The Beatles album "Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band".

The Beach Boys, especially in the 1960's, were HUGE. They put out a ton of music and kind of transitioned between the Doo Wop songs of the '50's and the rock music of the late '60's, early '70's. They always had great songs about surfing and fast cars that were catchy and had a great beat to dance to. But if you want to experience their slower, but still great harmonies, check out In My Room. Their popularity hung on through the 1970's and even into the 1980's. In fact, their song, Kokomo, was used in the Tom Cruise movie Cocktail in 1988. It was the last big hit that I remember them having. Their sound aged, but never got old.

The Beach Boys were HUGE about the time this song came out, but the more Rock acts kind of put them (and others) into the background later in the sixties. Plus the tech improvements in recording and instrumentation seemed to drive out vocal harmonies. But a lot of great music came before the Rock era.

My Grandma introduced me to The Beach Boys from an early age. Jan & Dean and a lot of others too. In the early 60’s she was living in Hawaii. It was surf music and surf culture all the way and they weren’t going to give it up without a fight.

The BB's were the biggest thing in Rock & Roll from 1962-64 until the Beatles and the other British Invasion came along but the BB's held their own up until 1967 when their creative force Brian Wilson had a breakdown and their experimental "SMiLE" album was unreleased. They continued to make records and had the occasional hit and remained a successful touring act through the 90's until Carl Wilson died in 1998. Two members continue today as a touring only act. Five members did a 50th Anniversary reunion tour and album in 2012. Brian Wilson continues to write and record music today. They had a #1 in 1988 with "Kokomo", their last Top 40 hit. The 1966 album "Pet Sounds" is considered to be their creative high point by most critics.

This song had Dean Torrence from Jan & Dean on it. They were big at the same time. Surf City, Deadman's Curve ...Jan had a terrible car crash, that left him debilitated. The BeaTles arrived in 1964, most american rockers had to change their styles. Even Elvis' sales suffered at first. The surf sound took beautiful 4 & 5 part harmonies, and made the bridge between Doo-Wop and Folk music into the Southern California sound. That's when we got the Mama's and Papa's, Scott McKenzie, Bob Dylan and then the Flower Power movement. Fun music at a time our nation needed it most. We had just lost JFK, Civil Rights were being trampled on. Medgar Evers, Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy all assassinated. The Beach Boys were right there. They have been very under appreciated. I love their music. They grew as a band also, everyone mentions the iconic album Pet Sounds. The song "God only knows" there were different styles, but the harmonies were always there. My personal favorites are "Surfer Girl" and "In My Room" . And for just fun songs "California Girls" and Ko Ko Mo.
