A weird little side note: You can tell the stainless is low quality *because* magnets stick to it. High Grade Stainless has enough Chromium in it to stop magnets from sticking. I used to build high end kitchens and we had to distinguish between Stainless Steel and "Stain-Less" Steel often.

There are magnets that can tolerate higher temperatures as well. The term you're looking for is the Curie temperature :)

Some washing machines are easier to fix than others and some NEED to be fixed more frequently. Our top loading Whirlpool washing machine is over 30 years old. I have replaced the motor and several other parts but it has been less expensive than a new machine. We run it daily and sometimes twice a day but sometimes we skip a day or two.

Hey Morley! Watching from about an hour outside of Detroit - on the Canadian Side of the border. I’ve watched a handful of your videos over the passed week or so, and your resourcefulness and ability to fix and create things is inspirational. I love how you can see the potential of 3D printing - by creating parts for fixes, and I also love how you use conventional power tools as well (was watching you build the mobile writing yesterday). I feel as if more people started using your mindset when it comes to fixing/creating, the world would be a better place. Kudos to you!

Hey man, Whirlpool, the maker of KitchenAid, uses a pretty standard design for the wrappers on their microwaves and toaster ovens. After all the screws are removed from the wrapper, most slide back to unclip from the front of the appliance before they can be removed. Should make your repair easier next time.

So impressed with your 'problem solving' techniques and ability. I do the EXACT same thing you do. There is, in my mind a time limit I can spend on anything to fix it. Example. My Dyson vacuum cleaner will not switch to upright suction. Many problems with this on the internet. I spent hours trying the repairs online. Gave up. Plus, the price to have it repaired is almost twice to replace it with another good brand. Thank you so much. These videos are so much fun and 'educational'. As someone who will try to fix something. I've also been disappointed by some major brands; so much so that I don't shop by brands. I'm currently disappointed by my Maytag over the range microwave. The heating/cooking and features are okay but when I pulled the handle to open it the handle & front doorframe came off. I ordered a replacement -- twice and both were the wrong size. The whole door assembly was more expensive than the microwave. My radiation meter says the unit works in the safe range but it sure would be nice to have a real door hand and front door frame. I'm currently figuring out a fix using JB Weld and additional plastic supports. Meanwhile I bought a little Magic Chef microwave that works well but takes up my counter space.

Electronic engineer here, if the magnet is not heated above its Curie point it will not permanently demagnetize (btw just fyi they can be remagnetized by the same process, heat them up above their Curie point and expose them to an external magnetic field). They will lose some strength when they are heated, but if it doesn't reach above the Curie point (roughly around 300C for neodymium magnets, which, kitchen ovens usually don't even approach easily) then they won't permanently demagnetize.
@oliverer3
@oliverer3 2 жыл бұрын
For future reference you can get samarium cobalt magnets that are rated for much higher temperatures, they're a bit weaker than a neodymium magnet of the same size though but for something like this that wouldn't have mattered much.

We have a Cuisinart toaster oven just like this. The door switch failed and wouldn't let the oven operate or turn on. After looking for a way to fix the switch, I said F it and just bypassed the switch. I had to open the side just like how you did. I cut the two wires and connected them together, and bam works great. I definitely think they are made to not be repairable and they want you to buy a new one.

Has someone already cleaned them out? Unfortunately in this case, that would have made things more difficult to repair without actually helping to open the case. Once we could see inside, it was obvious that the rivets were only holding the bracket for the door slide. Drilling the rivets out would have just let things fall apart more internally without allowing access to the insides.

I did not buy the breville smart oven air fryer pro for a similar reason. The same area but instead of a spring it has a washer that is made of GOD DAMN PLASTIC. For the price of 400 dollars you get an oven whose door will fail after opening and closer after about a year and a half cause the metal arm similar to this door with a slot for the washer cuts it away after repeated use. I forget if there is a spring as well but the failure point in the mechanism is the plastic washer. The only caveat that makes it better than this oven is the side panel comes off easily to repair that BS. which costs like a dollar at home depot for some METAL washers. It is ridiculous that companies build this jump and expect you to TRASH it when it stops working or refuse to repair it. So I could buy the oven and fix that issue myself but I find it ridiculous that I have to do additional work for an oven that COST $400.

That's not really true, at least the way you worded it. Different alloys of stainless are very intentionally magnetic. Maybe a semantic difference, but it's not about cheapness. I know many things are designed for replacement not repair, but when you're blaming planned obsolescence for your own inability to remove the housing cover that is only held in by screws and pressure, it makes you look inept. You kept blaming rivets, yet it's clear to see no rivets reached the cover. Instead of removing it properly (sliding backwards), you were trying to force it which can deform the housing. Also, since you finally reached the spring area, you could have done the better thing of drilling out that tiny rivet and then putting in a new one.

No offence but why was your first thought modify it with magnets? My first thought would be can I replace the spring that’s broken.

Because of the way it's constructed. He said he couldn't get in because of the rivet, so magnets were his solution

You are doing it wrong. Slide the outer case toward the rear. The front lip is just wedged in place. It only takes 1/2" (12mm) of movement to release it. The entire top cover will come off.
