You actually can teach cats as well as dogs with clicker training! Most people just don’t understand enough about cat’s, my cat is extremely well trained and doesn’t even needs treats for tricks and doesn’t misbehave.

I've seen the full video with the sea monkeys. After the pair bred, he put them back into the bigger tank with the rest of the colony. He also made it very clear that other people should not try what he did. He had proper resources to maintain them, but knew not to keep them there forever.

through the summer I had to stop so many people from buying feeders and gifting them at kid's parties. I had these parents getting so upset with me for not doing this and even trying to get my manager, who supported me since my pet store doesn't even support fairs.

Another really bad part about the goldfish instead of candy situation is kids are innocent and dumb. A lot of these parents probably didn't want these pets, no matter how much the kid could want to care for this random trick or treat goldfish, the parents may neglect it, or throw it out. Which is just traumatic for the poor kid.

I almost fainted when I saw the title. Just a perfect example of how people see fish as a toy/accessory for kids and not a real responsibility or living creature. I doubt that person would ever think of giving kids a kitten or puppy, but thinks a fish is somehow different. If I was a parent and my kid came home from Trick or Treating with a real goldfish, I wouldn't find the person who gave it to them and demand that they either take it back or pay for tank, filter, ect.

The goldfish as treats thing puts me in mind of something I read once in a book of ideas for kids' parties that frankly looks aspirational from my city gal perspective. It was parents giving out tiny fir trees wrapped in paper towels as party favors, on the premise that it was a memento kids would remember forever. Like, I know tree planting is a helpful environmental effort, but I don't think that's what the parent was driving at. They were literally talking about it in terms of making memories, as if you can guarantee folks have the space to plant a fir tree in their own yards, and that parents have the time and energy available to raise that tree from a sapling even if instructions WERE provided. And I'm pretty sure it costs money to buy the fertilizer, mulch, stakes, and other things needed. And that's assuming they even HAVE a yard. Even if they had a farm that's not a guarantee because they might need all the space they can get for crops. The goldfish is the same thing. Unnecessary inconvenience, you don't know if the person has the space and resources, foisting responsibilities they didn't order. And yes, I think it's wrong to use plants this way too. Especially non-vegetable ecologically important ones like trees. Don't give out baby trees as favors. Especially not a kids' birthday party. Trees are living creatures too. And don't give out fish as trick or treats, either.

An idea they could’ve used for there HORRIBLE bar tank,is that instead of torturing those fish they could put a bunch of sea monkeys/Brian shrimp with lots of plants and stuff then it would look cool and maybe if they made the tank thicker/bigger then and only then could they add fish. But if they did do it, I bet it would be a nightmare to clean either way 😂. I just wanted to add that my 4 you’re old kid wanted to have a pet, but I knew she wouldn’t be able to take care of it and neither would I, so I got a small-ISH tank and filled it with plants. yeah just plants. so if this CATASTROPHE happens, I could just take all the stuff out and not worry about her imaginary/invisible pet fish dying, because there are no pets in it!plus it looks good!😊

My parent would've tracked that house down and had a *very* stern conversation with them about the fish. My parent taught middle/junior high schoolers for years and NEVER had a student disobey, because when they're serious, they are scary as Hell. They're also reasonable and rational in explanation, which is why I'd like someone like them to go talk some sense into the goldfish giver. Sweet when you're good, Terror when you're not.

When I was a young child I knocked on the Aquarium glass once and then my dad told me, that I shouldn't do that because it could pop the fish swimm bladder and kill them Idk if that's actually true but I definitely stopped knocking on the glass after that because I cared (and still do care) about my pets

There are a LOT of ways to make realistic looking fish tanks with fake fish, plants, etc. I don't understand people that use them as decoration... Might be cheaper right away to put living fish in such a tank verses fake ones, but in the long run (to actually care for them, that is) it'd be so much more costly... time and money...

Our comet goldfish in our pond are all like 10+ years old and they know when feeding time is, you can go to them any time of the day and they don't care but at sunset they are all at the top waiting.

I’ve taught my cat to leave my plants alone. He only went for them a couple times, got corrected, and now he doesn’t. Cats are almost as trainable as dogs.

I think they thought if would get the kids really excited to get a pet while trick or treating but I think this would just be a negative experience in the end. Other than the stress on the fish, the kids would have to either go home early to try and get the fish in something it can live in or carry around a bag of water while they trick or treat only to find a dead fish at the end of the night. Also I'm sure the kid that dropped the fish felt so bad and will never forget that bad Halloween. If you want kids to really have a good Halloween you could put a toy or something in the treat bag, I put a Pokemon card in my treat bags this year and I think that's much more fun than a surprise fish.

All these "accidents": Woopsie! I left my TODDLER unattended for over an hour and they immediately killed the pets. Woopsie! Such a horrible thing is happening right now. I could keep it from happening, if I wasn't so busy filming. Too bad! Woopsie! I totally unintentionally gave kids pets that the parents wouldn't be able to properly care for, setting the parents up to be the bad guy. We are soooooo quirky! I haven't exactly taught my cats tricks but they all definitely know when we tell them they can't do something. Sometimes they'll try to push the boundaries, but a firm yet calm 'no' will stop them from doing it.

Cats are easier trained than people give credit for. My cat is accidentally partially trained to come when called. He's an outside cat, and he knows my voice well. He only comes to me when called unless he reaaaaally wants inside. All I have to do is whistle for him a specific way(I started doing that to get his attention because he wouldn't acknowledge his name)

Whenever I clean out my axolotls tank when the lid is off my cat will often go up to the tank and sniff the water (probs because it smells like fish) but she smart enough to know that she’d get in trouble.

[rant] when you mentioned how you don't like people giving animals to others unannounced I got almost all of my pets that way. I got all my cats by suprize, I got chickens by suprize, I got ferrets and snaked by suprize and rabbits by suprize. Some of these were really hard to take care of and I had no prior experience before getting. I'm an animal lover and I enjoy and love all my pets but it's so stressful to get them and have no idea what to do or have anything ready for them.

My cat went on to the top of the tank and went through, which was a lesson unto itself luckily. She also went through a screen top for our gargoyle gecko, put a cookie cooling rack on top and her even going on there was never an issue again. I hear doing a 45 degree angle off an edge will prevent them from making an attempt. Intend to try that (while she is leashed) to see if we can have her on our deck.

The goldfish one reminded me of something that happened to my old highschool's band, the visiting band actually bought them goldfish and a small bowl. I don't know if it was a prank because of our school colors or if they were trying to give them a gift. Luckily my family has a large pond and they promptly brought home and put there.

For the last tank, the water level was probably very low because imagine how much volume all those toys take up. Before the toys were put in, it was probably like half of that.

As someone who HAD pets as a kid (fishes) that i had no clue how to take care of and likely had a way shorter lifespan due to this, i agree you should not let kids take care of pets. Not in a cruel way, just in the same way that you should let kids have friends their age but not let them babysit another kid. I'd say, if your kid wants a goldfish or any other pet? Only buy it if you're ready to have the whole "caring for it" process be on you. Kids don't need to learn how to take care of pets when they're that young, it's just gonna end badly for the pet. For the time being they can learn from watching you do it and then inform themselves when they become adults. Pets are living beings and don't deserve to be treated as nothing but learning opportunities for your kids or even for other pets (ie: the cat jumping in the aquarium thing).

You can’t teach a cat not jump and hunt fish but you can definitely prevent it by having a tank with a lid

Both of my cats know not to jump on the fish tank, but it has a lid that is secure just in case. I didn't even have to train them, they just get it. I've never had to scold them for jumping up there. Just keep cat trees plentiful and in the same room as the aquarium, and they'll usually prefer to sit on those as opposed to an uncomfortable aquarium with lots of water noises.

My BF keeps sending me these "cute" animal videos such as dressed up animals, predators breaking into prey animals' enclosures, rabbits and hedgehogs swimming etc. and it's getting tiring explaining that all of these are blatant abuse, especially when it's hard to accept since most of the time the animals seem "relaxed". Ugh the goldfish, someone did this around me. I work at one of the 2 pet stores in our city and the looks i got when i explained the tank size that fish needs not to mention the care. The people giving them out are horrible.

Cats like to jump to the highest ground. What would probably work is putting a sturdy but easily removable shelf right above the tank so the cat can get onto the high ground and lay there but the fish are safe.

Hi a random thing happened. Someone left 2 box turtles on my porch in a box. I got them to eat and drink. They look so much better.

for the last one i could see how a child COULD do that, because kids can get extremely quiet and stealthy when they are up to no good and know they are up to no good, but that has to have been the parents doing that. there would be water outside the tank if it was THAT full of toys, unless the water level was extremely low, but i doubt that. the tank would have overflowed after the first 5 to 10 toys if it wasnt halfway filled up. once again, a kid could very possibly do something like that, but their child more likely than not didnt do anything.

When my youngest was a toddler we had an aqvarium. She was fast as lightning when she wanted to. So 1 day she dropped 5 lego duplo in the tank: 1 boyfigure, 1 girl figure and 3 squere ones (yellow, green and red). I took them out (cause I didnt want them there). But she kept on doing it and it was always the same 5 ones. So after the 5th time I told her that if she did it again I would not take them out again. She did it again with the same 5 pieces and they stayed in the aquarium until I sold it about 1 year later. She never asked for them back during the whole year. I was not thrilled with the lego duplo decorations but I did say I wouldnt take them out so I didnt have much choice.

People sometimes get 2 fish tanks and one with fish and one with only water because then they let the cat jump in the one with only water so it learns not to do it and no fish are harmed

the sea monkeys micro aquarium... I've seen the video, that man put 2 eggs in it, they hatched, and as soon as they reached adult size, he made the video and then put them in a "sea monkeys" tank with their "siblings". He also told this was not suitable for adult sized brine shrimps.

is kinda annoying that people say "you cant train a cat to do that" first of all you actually can but it takes way more longer sometimes so if you dont want to stop leaving the tank wide open and if you dont have anything to cover the tank at least step in the fish arent there for entertainment sheesh

It's a bit of a battle with the cats, we have 5 of them and around 70 fish tanks. 3 of the cats stay off the tanks, 2 of them definitely won't so most of my lids are reinforced. I will say, 100% silicone caulking tape is a life saver for cracked lids, both glass and plastic. Just be sure to avoid anything with mold resistant chemicals added, look for "100% non-toxic silicone" on the label.
