Two guys in an unfortunate situation rolled a Ford Everest in remote country. We happened to drive past them and helped them recover from a gruelling 40km overnight walk.

@@darkhorse4148 It's no replacement for a proper sat phone or PLB/EPIRB. It MIGHT get enough of a signal out to make a call or send a message, but it shouldn't be relied on in an emergency situation.

its good that it had turned out this way for this occasion, but for everyone looking to go remote Aus her are 5 things to know/have: 1. Water & Food 2. EPIRB 3. Have a buddy 4. Tell someone where you are going and when to expect you, to check in call 5. Never leave your vehicle. Your vehicle provides shelter and is easier to find from the air and on ground.

Great to see you secured the Everest from the rear as well. Not a lot of people appreciate that dependant on the park brake setup, even if it's in park and with the park brake on, it can still roll when it's up on two side wheels. Patrols and Land Rovers with their transfer case brakes are a classic example.

A friend recently rolled a car (ours 😢) in a remote spot. We were able to figure out where they probably were and had people on the way to find them. Luckily they had an iPhone 14 and used the emergency satellite communication it's got to alert emergency services. I had a call from the cops at 730 to let me know where she was, and they got her home around 2am. As much as we would have found her, we would have been worrying right up until someone got her back to town. I was awed by how our small town rallied to find her when I asked if anyone had seen her on FB. I had more help than i could use!

That's how it always used to be. We'd go camping summer or snow in groups of four or more. Because the only way to get help, was to send a solo runner out fast, and then have two others ti start carrying a stretcher back. Solo hiking? Twist an ankle and you might need four days to hobble back to an overnight trailhead. PLBs are a miracle.

That’s driving off road though, always something new to learn, sometimes the hard way……Great recovery guys 👏

So all that money spent on the vehicle and all that gear and no PLB? Latest iPhones, and maybe Android by now, allow users to contact emergency services via the satellite system and text. They can also link to family or whatever. Sat phones are also an obvious option. I watched another video put out by a well known 4wd'er who had to rescue a young guy who took a RAV 4 into a similar area and drowned it. These guys should be extremely thankful they didn't have any sort of medical event either. Kudos for having the balls to document this event so others may not do the same things and an excellent effort recovering the vehicle as it would have been well beyond the abilities and gear needed for most people.
@KarlEller
@KarlEller 10 ай бұрын
If I was in their situation, I don't know if I would have activated my PLB straight away. If you activate your PLB, they're only going to come for you, they won't do anything about the car, and you've still got to organise your vehicle recovery. If I thought I was in a situation where I could hike back to reception to call some mates, I'd probably try that before hitting the emergency button.
@oldbloke204
@oldbloke204 10 ай бұрын
@@KarlEller Fair enough but it was a 40k walk for a couple of guys that weren't well equipped for it and didn't even have a backpack to chuck some food/water in by the looks of it. Depending on what gear they had and the weather I would likely have set up camp and waited. Best outcome would have been being able to contact someone via technology. There's no way I could hike that far these days and if one of them had injured themselves, even via blisters or whatever, then the situation could change very quickly indeed. I always go with another vehicle and there's no way I would have tackled those tracks after so much rain either.
