ADDITIONAL REVIEW NOTES:
Will Folding Phones Replace Regular Phones?
Positives & Negatives
+1) DRIVING
Maps is fantastic! I love the large square view
Great for split screen too if you use some othe
-1) Ergonomics
Front screen too narrow to type well and the big screen in the middle required two hands
+2) OTHER APPS
Everyone talks about multitasking, but I usually just used one app at a time (unless i was driving)
Split screen essentially gives you two full size phones side by side, that are connected
I used Brave browser with multiple tabs - easier to read, easy to toggle tabs, easy to get a desktop like experience
WAYYY better for researching
Honestly even better than tablets in many regards. I prefer a laptop of course, but I would say this is number two, before tablets and definitely before slab phones
I love how apps like messages will just show conversations on the right and the list of conversations on the left - very useful!
Email is the same way
-2) APPS
Some apps get mad and won’t open (earbud tester app) unless you split screen
Since we are talking about the future of foldables, this will definitely improve
+3) Cool features
Fold to use as a tripod for the camera - in any orientation
Fold to use as a tripod for the flashlight
Fold to use as a stand for watching videos
I actually use this last one all the time
-3) Aspect ratio
At least right now, videos are not formatted for these aspect ratios. I think someday the folding phones will have a more consistent aspect ratio (wider front display and less square middle)
So much wasted space!
BUT the middle display is really large, so you are still getting a better viewing experience than most other devices
+4) Pen and large writing space
I can legitimately get a lot of work done. Reading contracts is amazing, signing is amazing, and sometimes even taking notes
but the pen is too large to carry around unfortunately
-4) I never use the pen case (I bought one, but it just sits on my desk) - this really needs a pen silo. If it had that, then folding phones could really have some major advantages over slab phones
+5) Fun, novel, and interesting
-5) I wish Snapchat had a preview mode for the rear display - the interior screen sucks, but sometimes I want to use the rear lenses
+6) Most of the drawbacks people expect before using a foldable were a non issue for me - durability, weight, thickness, the crease in the middle, the under display camera quality
-6) Hard to make these dust resistant
Mine already gets creaky when I open it
It is hard to explain the increased productivity I have with this phone. It is smaller than a tablet, so you can actually type on it, and the crease makes me want to multitask. At the same time the larger display in comparison to a traditional phone makes it easier to read/multitask/use s-pen
CONCLUSION
I think this needs to be wider and slimmer
I don’t think they will replace slab phones. I think they will coexist and we will eventually see foldables steal a larger market share, but I am not convinced they will be a majority, but I could see them getting much more popular than they currently are

One of the primary use cases of folding phones is to open it out and watch video content in its full glory. Yet no manufacturer has worked out that the square screen with hideous black bars is not the best way to do this.

We humans can never make up our minds. The first cells were huge so we wanted smaller ones. Then they got to the point of being so tiny you could hardly hold them or read the numbers or press the buttons. Next, we had the clamshells which had more acreage, when open, which gave us bigger keys and display. Then Blackberry came along, followed by Apple, et al, and we needed them to be bigger, again, up to the point where they were getting close to a tablet, in size. Now we want to be able to fold them into a thick brick or we want to use our watch. The times they are achangin'.

The Z Fold 4 is my first foldable, and after returning it twice because I had problems adjusting to the high price, I finally got a third one after I missed it, and am sticking with it. Once I got used to having a phone that could be both a one-handed device on the go AND a gorgeous mini-tablet, I am wondering if I will ever go back to the slab phone design again. The Fold 4 is definitely heavy, but it feels like such a premium piece of tech. The opening and closing of the inside display is so satisfying. Like you, I don't really need to use it for multi-tasking for work, but I love love using it for reading web content, texting, social media, viewing photos. I used the Pixel 7 Pro for a few days, and aside from the form factor, I also missed how much faster the 8 Gen 1+ processor felt in comparison to Tensor G2. I am still getting used to the camera and the different options that the fold form factor brings to the table, but I think I am on board until I trade in for the Fold 5. I am used to the cover screen being smaller, I use swipe to text, and it works well.

I have the Galaxy z fold 2 and I love it! kinda... lol. I can't wait until the 5th or 6th version comes out and includes the S Pen housed IN the phone. There's so much you can do with these foldables. I opt out of upgrading to the 3rd or 4th version because I really didn't see much change.

there is nothing satisfying about opening and closing it, you just tell that to yourself as it makes you feel better about your purchase and you belive your own lie now. I've had my z fold 3 for about 2 years, it's been returned twice because of the screen protector splitting along the crease, the third time it happened I just removed it, now the actual screen is cracking and the large display intermittently won't come on and also the speaker has now stopped working when fully opened, I really like the foldable phones but looks like I will be going back to the standard non foldable phone as foldable's are just not robust enough to last especially at the price you pay.

Front displays are too small in general, also on the largest slab phones. That is the whole point of wanting a foldable. Personally, I never type one handed and hardly ever use any smartphone one handed at all except answering calls. Agree on the "multitasking" nonsense - multitasking actually means running and using more than one app at the same time, not cramming more than one on a still tiny screen at the same time, when you can just quickly switch them anyway. Given I work that way on a 16" laptop screen, I won't start doing different on 8" instead of 6" tiny phone. Single app on somewhat bigger screen, easier to read and type, that is the foldable promise to me as well. For video we need double-hinge foldables that unfold to a 3 pane 10" tablet equivalent. That said, I do not tend to consume (visual) media on the go, so it's not something I would be disappointed about the square foldables not delivering.

The fold phone can become really popular if they can decrease the thickness of the phone body and increase the screen seize in the fold position. I don't really see fold phone replacing regular phone because their defects are too much of a big hurdle to overcome. I truly agree with you Mike of all the things you highlighted about the fold phone in this video. The detail nuances that you Mike explain in this video is clearly noticeable to me.

While I agree that there are things I would change as well and things that are not perfect/annoying, this is the best phone I have ever owned (the original HTC One being #2). I had the LG V60 dual screen before and while I liked that phone a lot, that had even more drawbacks. The Fold 4 addressed nearly every issue I had with that phone. I don't want to go back to a single screen phone. I use my Fold 4 in the car like you had it set up Mike, I also am a sales rep and travel a lot so the Fold 4 is amazing to have to take notes, show videos, and be able to have multiple items up at one time. The battery is amazing, I love the stylus even if it is big and does not fit inside of the phone. It makes scrolling on the big screen and tapping with precision much easier. My last Samsung phone was the Note 5 and that was the first time I could stand Samsung's UI. The multitasking on this phone is out of this world and Samsung really nailed that aspect in my opinion. I am at that person that will have 3 apps up and a floating window for maps/media/calculator. As always with phones it comes down to your needs. Samsung had amazing trade in deals to get the price down to what any other flagship would be. The V60 was my test to see if folding or dual screen phones were worth it and switching to the Fold 4 was the right move in my opinion.

I am on budget, but I buy flagships, my last was in 2022 with the SD 8 gen.1, it's not hot in my Edge 30 Pro by the way, but considering a SD8 Gen.3 device to be foldable, I just opened YT and played a video to check what I suspected and it is like he said- the screen is almost suqare, so I alligned my Edge 30 Pro to Fold 4 and the same video played on the wider fold 4 side was almost the same size as my regular phone. And like he mentioned for us who watch a lot of media this is a problem, I want to have the big screen for movies and YT and a comfortable phone to type, so I will stick to a regular flagship devices.

Having a folding phone is excellent. Especially when it's new. Less than 2 years later, I'm walking away. Screen damage is the issue. I treat my phones like babies. Look after them well, give them protection ect. But firstly the screen protector started bubbling and delaminating. After that just over a year later the actual screen has started showing microfractures in its surface. Waiting for the coming failure like everyone else are reporting. And samsung won't replace the screen because they will find any tiny nick or imperfection to blame you and void the warranty claim. So after over 12 years of loyal Samsung ownership. A Samsung Omnia, samsung S3, samsung note 3, samsung note 9 and my current samsung fold 3, I'm going to buy the Google pixel next. Samsung after care for premium phone owners has become shockingly bad. I'd expect a phone to either last over 2 years at the price of a decent gaming computer at £1800, and I'd expect much better after care. Samsung know there is a problem. But they don't want to pay the millions replacing people's phones for free. So enjoy your mobile phone death Samsung. You've lost me and many many others.... Maybe you should have kept the Note series going!? 🤬

Do people still sign contracts, been doing E-Signatures for years using secure interface. Even if you are still in the dark ages signing NDA’s then use an app that signs for you, I used that for 10 years before e-signatures. I found the user case for the s-pen nominal as I suck as an artist and notes are just so much better when typed. No wonder other folding phones do not have pen support. Nice for those that need it though, so I am sure there is a demographic that are sold by the s-pen, but for the majority, not really. For me, the Fold is a beta, and Samsung not really pushing the boundaries. No surprise, where can they go with it? So, with just slow uptake and y-o-y growth not what you would expect for a product that is hyped by YT creators to take off, I do not think Samsung has the solution. I am sure they have other devices being developed, so maybe one of them will grab us, but ATM the Fold4 is interesting but not that good for the majority, though great for a small minority, that can purpose it.

I went from s23 ultra to z fold five, and I regret it. The phone felt fragile and made me miss my ultra. The battery also sucked. I already hated messaging and sending video with my friends because all my friends had iPhones, but now I hated my phone. This caused me to buy an iPhone. I feel Samsung makes the best phone, but the rest of the ecosystem is lacking. In a perfect world, I would use an ultra phone and buy everything else: apple. I hope Apple loses in court.

May I ask why though? I've been recently owning one and it's been a delight using it at a gym. Whilst I have yet to bring mine to a beach (reluctant to too, honestly), I've read many reviews of others bringing their folds to beaches and it's been fine.

The biggest problem for me is the fragility of the fold and look of the crease itself. It will never equal a solid and perfectly flat piece of glass. They are neat but are indeed a bit of a fad. The solid glass screen in rectangular shape is here to stay for sure. People have had it for too long now and are very very comfortable with it. There is no hand held portable better to watch widescreen movies or TV on than with a solid flat screen phone turned in widescreen orientation. The dimensions are almost perfect and not having a crease just makes it an even better experience. The ergonomics are great, the ease of texting. Just about everything. I may be wrong, I have been in the past, but I just don't see a folding screen ever becoming truly mainstream just due to the fact that it's cheaper to get a solid screen and definitely more durable and more familiar, and a better quality experience when viewing video content and texting.

tip for the keyboard: use g board go into the settings and adjust the "keyboard height" to your liking. this makes it much much easier. i am just as fast as my old note 10 and i have big hands. also for the inside screen you can use the "floating keyboard"and slide it over to the bottom right or left dependin on preference and then its basically the same as the front screen.

after watching the video i mostly agree. the biggest thing for me is the dust resistance. i wipe my spine off everytime before i open it. its been over a year. seems to be working well as i still open at a full 180 degrees but idk. i remember not giving af about my note. id lap that thing multiple times a week. this phone im way careful with. alot of times i just use the cover screen. after having it for so long now i mostly only use the inside screen when im hooked up to my keyboard/mouse like rightr now, or watching some videos at the end of the day. other than that its closed 85% of the time. i also dont like how i cant force my wallpapers to be the same automatically from inside to outside. like why do i gotta change it twice. i have the mirror screen option going. but that only does the apps and stuff. doesnt change the wallpaper. its not that big of a deal. just change it twice i guess.

No...traditional cell phones are perfectly fine. Pretending foldable cell phones will replace what isn't broken is like pretending 3D TVs will or ever had the capacity to replace high def TVs. On that note, foldable cell phones are just another example of a dumb fad that people are pretending is the renaissance period for cell phones...when that very fad died out years ago for being largely unnecessary and impractical. You also have to factor in their absurd price tag...simply because they fold...yet they lack any worthwhile specs that are actually better than a traditional cell phone. I'm talking about YOU, Samsung...who likes to put your superior cameras on your traditional cell phones, your S and Note lines...not your more expensive foldable cell phones instead. Then again, the processor in your foldable cell phones, made the SAME YEAR as your traditional cell phones, is better... Folding phones do nothing necessary and game-changing that'll make them anywhere near worthy of questioning traditional cell phones. A reasonable price tag alone is still out of reach. People are simply misguided enough to mistake gimmicks for innovation, and these things as a result have gotten out of control with their perceived value and hype.

...The point is that there is no real advantage to using a foldable phone, since a 16:9 video watched with the screen open has the same resolution as if watched on a regular phone held horizontally. The only real use I can find in the big screen (aside from games, of course) is for video conferencing, but I don't know anyone who's had a meeting while in the car or sitting on a bench in the park. I agree with you that they are yet another attempt to foist on us a needlessly complex and expensive product, which in the end does nothing more than what we already have.
