I’m personally impressed you managed to talk 10 fricking minutes about why holsters should not cover the trigger guard 👏
@dftdbs1010
@dftdbs1010 Жыл бұрын
Holsters should cover the trigger guard. This is especially important with glocks. You ensure your finger is off the trigger before you holster as it should be if you're following the basic rules of gun safety. This ensures your trigger can't be manipulated by outside stimuli. For example, you're running through the woods, and a branch snags on your trigger, and the firearm goes off into your thigh. Also, clothing can catch and pull the trigger. Especially loose shirts. If you have a good fitting holster that is made correctly, what he's saying won't be an issue. This is the exact reason why carrying a gun in your wasteband is declared unsafe, the trigger is exposed.

Tim showed people a neat trick in one of his videos. When holstering a double action gun, you can keep your thumb on the hammer. That way if the trigger gets hooked on something, the hammer will push against your thumb, letting you know something is wrong and you need to stop pushing.

Hopefully you're buying a holster manufactured by a company that understands the mechanics of the guns it's building holsters around. A DA pistol with no safety is vastly different than a SA/DA Semi Auto with a grip safety and trigger safety. I'd take a full trigger covered kydex holster for my XD pistols anyday. It comes down to buying the right holster for the right gun.
@LezChap
@LezChap 5 жыл бұрын
This I'll agree with...Any pistol I currently own to carry is a striker design with no manual safeties, and I want full coverage of the trigger area...as he points out, soft materials bend, and even with Kydex a gap can form allowing foreign objects to slip in, and all it takes is a "little tug" on the trigger to set off a Glock or Shield/M&P firearm (at least the XDs I've handled have the grip safety mechanism). Much less likely for something to work its way in when the full trigger guard is covered.

I just tried to pull the trigger on an M9 and a PX4 Storm, while holding my thumb on the hammer. With very little effort on my thumb, I thought I’d break the trigger trying to move it. Putting your thumb on the hammer will absolutely work. I’d encourage others to empty their DA/SA pistols, and give it a try.

I don’t think this is good advice. When carrying around, We don’t re-holster while we are carrying concealed. So we dont need the short length. It would be better to have full coverage to prevent things from entering the trigger guard throughout the day. If you have your shirt catch, the short length of your holster, for example, wont stop the shirt from tugging at the trigger if you move around.

I'd advise new CCW users, armed officers avoid kydex holsters with "side guards" or high style side sections. This plastic or holster section will cause you to have a awkward re holster, problems CCW when you re holster.

My 1911 TTGunleather Holsters cover the entire trigger, but I don’t have your concerns. Cocked and locked and thumb on the hammer. So the resolution to a soft sided holster causing an nd is not to get a hard sided holster, but to buy a holster that exposes MORE of the trigger and guard? What happens if your seat belt pushes into your soft sided holster and causes an nd? Seems to me if we want to actually solve these issues the best solution is a hard sided holster, i.e. kydex or molded plastic, and ensuring it fully covers the trigger and guard so nothing, like a pencil, can get in between the holster lip and trigger. But hey I'm just a yuck yuck on the internet. What do I know.

If you practice safe drills with real life carry and clothes you may come to the same conclusions TYM has. Anything with a drawstring is by far the most dangerous ime, however I have seen a shirt go in a few times. This happens with Kydex/polymers just the same as leather. If it was a leather only thing the Kydex/polymer fan boys would taunt that as a reason to only use Kydex. I use both kydex and leather and sometimes combinations of the two so no dog in this race. And as for the toughness of leather, you will have to pay more for a quality leather holster than for polymers/Kydex, but you can't cheap out and buy a thin soft condom leather holster and expect it to be awesome. Just go slow and give holstering the attention it deserves.
@FNG_Star
@FNG_Star 4 жыл бұрын
@@wesmccage You missed the point. If you run drills then you should already be practicing lifting your shirt to reholster or leaving it tucked in. The issue is a holster that filly covers the trigger is a must. Especially if carrying with the gun chambered and ready to shoot at a moments notice, condition 1. But you carry what you want. Have never seen a person say the wish their holster had less trigger protection after defensive use, but i have and heard about accidents with holsters the are too small and/or flimsy. So its more likely a poorly designed holster will get you shot then having a holster that properly seats and covers the working mechanical parts on the gun.

@davidapoland
@davidapoland 3 жыл бұрын
A quality holster won't collapse into the trigger well enough to fire it. Holstering is a deliberate act anyway. You should look at what you're doing to ensure your shirt isn't in the way. covering the full trigger well is part of fitting the gun. Holsters from Alien Gear, Stoner, BlackHawk, and concealment express all fully cover the trigger well.

Gotta say i love your videos..but on this i totally disagree. I carry IWB so more space left open the more shirt or underwear or jeans is gonna linger in that hole behind the trigger..maybe even catch the trigger as i reholster....not good...id rather have a kydex holster that goes way up to the handle damn near. Totally clearing the trigger guard..no way anything can get in there when reholstering.

I love my leather holsters, especially for my 357 mag snub nose. I've got a custom made and never experienced any problems. But there is no rush to holster a gun and there is no reason to pull it out besides having a defense event. So I holster my gun in the morning and take it out of the holster in the evening in the house again. Actually, I'll think people that constantly pulling their gun out are pretty immature (in my opinion). What would be the reason for taking the gun out of the holster during the day beside experiencing a life-threatening situation?

Idk, maybe at the range or practicing?? Just for one example. Dry firing practices are another. I guess those folks are "immature." Smh

Remove the holster from your belt. With it pointed in a safe direction, re-holster the handgun. Put the holstered handgun on your belt. Don’t wear a holster that cannot easily be removed from the belt if re-holstering is something you want to do. Practicing re-holstering a loaded handgun is idiotic for anyone but maybe law enforcement. Problem solved.

diln chil I get what you’re saying. I am not saying cops are special because of the uniform. I’m saying they may unholster/re-holster as part of a normal duty day. The avg. dude should never be pulling the gun anyway. If they do, it’s to shoot to stop a threat. After a defensive shooting, I’m not re-holstering. I’m guarding the scene till cops arrive, then probably putting the gun on the ground to avoid being shot by mistake.

Inadvertent discharges are every bit as dangerous as premature discharges and more dangerous than nocturnal emissions.

A bit of an old video, but I'll comment anyways. In Texarkana, a police officer was wanting to carry a 44 magnum revolver chambered in 44 special (I suppose he wanted to be like Dirty Harry). After pestering the chief long enough, the chief gave him the okay IF the officer could pass the qualification test using the 44 revolver. On the first go try, the officer passed his qualification, and as soon as he qualified, he holstered his revolver, discharging a round into his leg. The officer was also part-time, so he didn't have insurance from being a cop.

If something lodges in there behind the trigger and you are unable to pull the trigger when needed, if that is even possible its probably a bad thing.

Also i have seen holsters with so much material around the trigger that it actually bumps the mag release button and drops the mag.
