In today’s video we cover the three key cultural practices that will help you achieve a thick green lawn. Before we get started, let me point out two things that will not help your journey for a thick, healthy bermuda lawn; shade and overseeding with common bermuda seed. The three things that you MUST do in order to have a yard that stands out is mow correctly, water correctly, and fertilize correctly. Follow along as I discuss the pitfalls that most people run into on their quest to have the nicest lawn on the block.

One of the many goals I have this year is cut lower and do things to thicken up the lawn. What are your thoughts on Hydretain and plant growth regulator? Have you used those products before. What is your soil condition? Mine is dang near all clay it’s bad about getting hard and compacted.

I had a landscaper tell me that I could add lime to the side yard that doesn’t get much sun (to add growth, between houses) in NC. I’m hesitant, but he told me it would not burn the grass. I think the previous owners had parked a trailer there, so it’s like a dust bowl when I mow. Thanks for all the helpful information on Bermuda lawns! I came from FL with St. Augustine, so it’s quite a learning curve!

I did exactly what you said NOT to do about 3 yrs ago. I used regular bermuda seed in my hybrid celebration yard!! Do I need to get a sod cutter and remove this and lay more sod? It has spread to almost 500 Sq feet in a 7k foot yard. Awesome content as always!!
@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider 2 жыл бұрын
I think it’ll come down to your preference, because as far as I know there’s no selective herbicide that’ll take out the common and leave the hybrid. Since it’s a fairly small area right now you might want to consider removing with the sod cutter and then sodding/plugging the bare area with your existing turf.

Trying to see if you can point me in the right direction to start. I put new bermuda sod about two months ago and there are certain portions that just stayed super brown. I live in florida so plenty of rain right now. What type of fertilizer or treatment do you recommend to start trying to get my grass more green.
@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider 2 жыл бұрын
I would start out by trying to lock in the watering schedule (despite the frequent rain) at this point you should be good putting down 1”-1.5” a week, assuming your turf is established by now. If you get enough rain, don’t run your irrigation that week. Next thing is just mowing as frequently as you can. As far as fertilizer goes, make sure you’re not in one of the counties with fert blackouts this time of year. I think it’s mainly in Southern Florida. In lieu of a soil test I would recommend throwing down something like a 15-5-10. I’m using Yard Mastery products this year, the closest fertilizer they have to that analysis is their 17-7-6 Freedom fertilizer.

Currently I'm using a Honda rotary on my newly planted bermuda. Although it looks mostly flat, it still has its bumpiness throughout areas which I would scalp if I bring my mower all the way down. I've been mowing at the 2nd to lowest setting without too much complaining, but I'd have to level out the lawn first before I drop it all the way down. Any pointers?

So dealing with what the builder put down has been a huge pain. The sod was dead , and within a year I’ve brought it back but not to its full potential. I have bare spots that slowly fill in , but they don’t seem to grow vertically . They are filling in across which I can’t mow to stimulate growth because the blade can’t reach it . Any tips ? I get full sun no shade . Just put down Scott’s green max few weeks ago and I’ve put down RGS bio stim as well.
@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider 2 жыл бұрын
My experience with bare spots (mostly from dog urine in my case) is that the grass has to fill in completely horizontally before it begins to push vertically. You might consider plugging some of the bare to speed up the fill in process. Builder soil is he worst 😂

Nice. So what's up with the 16-0-0? Does bermuda need phosphorous and potassium? I've been using 13-13-13, started from seed, looking good so far.
@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider 2 жыл бұрын
Short answer is that Bermuda needs N, P, and K. But every fertilizer doesn’t have to have all 3. Double Dark isn’t going to normally be used as a primary fertilizer though… most people would either use Flagship or Freedom if they’re using the Yard Mastery line.

@@LawnInsider OK. Thanks. I ran a landscape co in Southampton NY for 20 years and worked with k bluegrass and ryes so I don't know what really makes bermuda run. I’m new to Bermuda lawn care. I want it to grow to fill in bare spots and get it to be a dark green. Is Putting that much of nitrogen fertilizer bad for the grass or soil?
@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider Жыл бұрын
Nitrogen is only bad in very concentrated quantities. The "problem" with N is that it also pushes a lot of growth on the rest of the lawn. It won't hurt to sprinkle a little extra fertilizer in areas that you're trying to get established/re-established.

@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider 2 жыл бұрын
I can understand that lol if you want to maintain the full two acres I would use a little higher height of cut and invest in some T Nex plant growth regulator to slow the growth of the turf down. Then again you’ll need some sort of boom sprayer to apply it. If you don’t have that or aren’t interested in that really all you can do is raise your height of cut some. If you don’t you’ll scalp every mow more than likely.
