Here I am using tweezers to pinch the buds off my pine and Peter just chops his tree in half with a cleaver. What is happening.

I have been dealing with bonsai and the associated work techniques for around 35 years. I have never seen that anywhere. I am happy to have learned something new again.

OK, that one made me chuckle out loud at 1:00am. I genuinely feel bad for the trees and just want to sing them a lullaby now after the trauma it suffered😂

It's amazing how much 'torture' a plant can withstand. I'd love to see this tree this time next year.

Read 'hidden life of trees'. Answer, probably. They grow away from things that damage them, justbas we would move our hands from heat. Likely due to pain receptors. This tree will probably die from infection. Trunk innards exposed, roots messed with and branches cut all in one. Typically we say only one insult per season!

@@leoi3031 You do realize you need a nervous system to have use for pain receptors? The fenomenon "pain' is a product of a nervous system, when you don't have a brain you need pain receptors even less than a fish needs a bycicle.

I imagine when you have done hundreds of trees you get a lot of courage to try drastic things. I hope we can see both these trees next year. I am no expert and I wonder if the thinner of the two will survive. I hope so as it has such a dramatic character.

hands down my all time favorite tutorial on Bonsai. both trees came out spot on. it's humbling watching a master at work.

That was so bold and interesting and fun to watch. I can hardly make the decision to cut off a branch or two when needed and you split that tree without pause. Hope to see the Progress of those next year.

Its a good job trees cant run, there would be no trees left in the nursery, they would all of run away and be hiding from Peter the cleaver.

Mr. Maverick at it again...a meat cleaver and a log splitter!!! I love that ends the video with a comment, "I've got to clean up the cleaver so I can use it on a duck later in the evening." :)

I have seen this twice and still enjoy what you have made from this tree. Peter I enjoy your video's and never tire of watching. Learning more each time. I now find another use for my cleaver that I never use anymore.

Thanks for sharing. I began by making blackthorn walking sticks, ten years ago. That’s what got me started in Bonsai. I decided that every tree I took a stick from, I would gather some seeds each November, so I could give back to nature. It’s amazing that I cannot get them to survive in my garden, but they have taken in local wasteland., along with hawthorn. I never make Jin’s or Shari’s but they look so great on the blackthorn. Thanks again for posting.

No I don't. My trees are way too small to be split in the middle, I am still working on getting thicker trunks so I can give this a try :-)

My first reaction was 😱 but then I remembered Peter did this technique on a Juniper I took to one of his work shops not quite as long but the juniper has been re-potted since with new growth on show. Just think how many of us have stuck plants/trees we dont like in the green bin, this is a new way of looking at ugly ducklings.

If I were to do something like that to one of my wife's kitchen tools, she would string me up by the neck. Yesterday, watching the video about the Ficus, I heard Peter say "I'll do a little pruning here" and thought "Be afraid little tree, be very afraid." Little did I know. I guess the social distancing and isolation in the UK is starting to get to Peter. :)
