Thin Lightsaber VFX Rework- Kenobi Fanedit

"Kenobi: Trials Of The Master" is a feature-length fan retelling of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. It uses the footage from the Series with other films in the franchise, and utilizes VFX, editing and new footage to create a completely new take on the story. It is intended to entertain and inspire the fan base, as well as to educate the upcoming artists on the possibilities of modern filmmaking.
This is not intended to interfere, or belittle, or replace the original series in any way. That's not even possible, and that was never my intention. And if it was even possible, I would never want it. This is my personal take on the story, and my ultimate love letter to the Star Wars universe.
This whole educational project wouldn't be possible without the artists and the entire creative team that made the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, so go and watch it on Disney+.
-I know a lot of people complained about it, and I'm not personally bothered too much about it. Seems like a very subjective issue, but the fact is that LED props make thicker blades than the ones we saw in the OT and even PT.
This is a quick VFX test for me to see what this new look brings to a table, and if timing-wise it's even worth doing it.
It will probably be a scrapped idea since there's bigger issues to fix.

To anyone who is wondering, the creator actually replied to a comment on this video, stating that the lightsaber thinning was removed. Quote, "It's a dropped idea". So no need to worry, this isn't going to be in the final cut!

@@BlueThe_Epic They do look kinda neat, but I think that they never really worked. They kinda always looked pitiful in comparison to the thicker ones, and kinda made the lightsaber fights feel weird. They felt a little to thin, like they would snap at any moment. At least in my opinion, I know others have different reasons for disliking them, but that's my take.

Nope. original lightsabers were 6 inches wide and 1mm thin. They were rectangles. In the 2003 edit (The best one) they're the same as episode 3. If we're going to have a battle of the "elite gate-keeping game" you've come unarmed.

@@texel76 tbh it was like the late 70’s and early 80’s and they were improving as the trilogy went 😂 I give it a pass. Same with the prequels in improving. I love theyre still improving the lightsabers (at times degrading sadly like the sequels), but even then the sequels had a good mix of risk to it also the way the effects were

Even though I love the VFX here, I much prefer the thicker lightsabers. It gives it more of a prequels era feeling.

Even though I prefer the thicker design since it fits more of the live action Star Wars films, I still REALLY appreciate the effort that went into redesigning them. The effects are flawless

This show had so many callbacks to Star Wars Rebels. The Inquisitors, Obi-Wan breaking Vader’s helmet, ok, that was kind of it. But Thin Lightsabers is a perfect callback. As always, awesome job!

I like both, thin reminds me of the first movies and the focus on patience during combat, and thick makes sabers look heavier and more powerful

I'll admit I REALLY didn't like the thin lightsaber look from Rebels at first, but it's slowly grown on me and I see a charm to the idea that I'd be flexible with either version of the lightsabers, but what I can't stand about this is the blown out lighting of the lightsabers! Yes, I know they're "light" sabers, but in every movie and series before they gave off a good amount of light, but a more subtle hint of colour added. But here and other scenes with lightsabers the coloured light is completely blown out and turns the scene into the old-school (red and blue) 3D glasses from when I was a kid...!

It’s maybe a little too thin, but I still think it’s a positive change. The thinner lightsabers have much more artistic weight and a killer edge, whereas the thicker ones look silly.

I was going to say “I think, the real reason the blade it a bit thick is because they’re actually using LED sticks than metal ones they used in the prequels or OG. If they were then thin it’d break” but even then Luke in the Mandalorian has quite a thin one. Some scenes thick. I mean he was fighting CGI droids, but still. I don’t mind the blade. It’s hard to keep consistency if you’re improving it ever so slightly, but you did a phenomenal job! I didn’t realize the thickness and seeing the comparison and your edit is just so fascinating!

I've never liked thin sabers. Even in ANH, lightsabers were thick. Filoni said thin sabers are inspired by McQuarrie's artwork, but McQuarrie's lightsabers look the worst IMO, they have a cone shape as they start wide and get thinner as they reach the tip. (This isn't meant to be negative btw, just a fellow SW fan giving his opinion)

The original sabres in Kenobi looked literally like toys with plastic blades and LED lights, rather than intense laser energy produced from a crystal. Somehow the lightsabers in the original trilogy look better.

Nice. If only the camera shake could be removed and the shorts re-made... Those parts really 'cheapened' the star wars experience for me, since I'm used to star wars meaning well designed epic cinematic shots.

@@mysticmarble94 It's actually Round Erode gizmo from nukepedia. I'm using luminance alpha as a mask for it, so it's only affecting the brightest parts of the shot, which is (mostly) a lightsaber.

I would have gone for something in the middle. Original is too think, your version is too thin. Just some constructive criticism when comparing it to PT lightsabers.

I like the other conversions but not this one. Its pretty much the same thing SW Rebels did and I didn't like it there and looks way off in here is as well

If you can, can you make it so that the lightsaber physics are like how they are in the prequels? Like what I mean is that can you make it so that there aren’t sparks coming off them when they clash and add the flash of light in the middle of the lightsabers that they would have when they would clash instead.

The sabers were thick because it need to have LEDs to reflect light on the surroundings and actor’s faces, they changed it for the force awakens

My issue with the sabers in Kenobi is how the light/color shows up so much on the surrounding surfaces. I know that is more "realistic" but it makes it look so much cheaper. I think the Prequels did it best... they were able to find a great balance in those movies.

The prequels didn't really do it at all. The lighting doesn't make it cheaper, that doesn't make any sense. It allows the site to be illuminated by the color of the lightsabers. The only reason that wasn't done in the prequels was because it literally was not possible most of the time. You can tell they tried in certain instances, but the tech just wasn't there. Now it is.

@@godofthecripples1237 Master Replicas existed back then, they could have use them, the issue with using this type of blade is that they bounce back, which is what you can see in all of the Disney fights. The blades were way too bright in the Kenobi show though.

It doesn't look "cheaper" to me, but in the OT and PT, the sabers' post-production colored glow looks much more crisp against the actual in-camera shot; it tends to get a bit lost in the surroundings in the newer material TFA onward...

unpopular opinion but I think that OT sabers (ep 5 and 6, not 4) looked the best. I didn't really like the prequel sabers, sequel sabers are a little better, they were at their best in ep 7

I’ll be honest, the thickness of the lightsaber was my biggest issue with the Kenobi series. It made scenes like Obi-Wan slicing the rock that Vader Force-threw at him look… off. Like, something that thick shouldn’t be able to cut Obviously, there’s other issues with the series, but none of them bothered me as much as they bothered others Star Wars fans

Episode 1-9 all had the exactly same width of light-saber, unless you count the original rectangular edged sabers in ANH, gen1. This is the Mandela effect in full force.

@@PixelJoker95 I love that too. It's so weird that people act like prequel sabers were an intentional decision and not just a technical limitation of the tech at the time. Plus it's great for visual symbolism. One of the highlights was Vader's face bathed in his saber's red light while he talks about how he's going to kill Kenobi.

I understand that you dropped this idea, but let me recommend you still make some sort of change to the lightsabers. There is irrefutable proof from both the originals and prequels that lightsabers have a cutting edge. In Obi Wan they still seem to bulbus. I dont know what kind of change you'd want to make since you scrapped this one, but it would still be recommended

I actually much prefer thicker lightsabers. I hate the sequel trilogy, but I admit that the lightsabers there are the ones that pleased me the most so far. Original trilogy: lightsabers thinner, and are the first concept of the weapon. Eventually during the original trilogy itself I felt like they evolved that design into something thicker. Prequel trilogy: Here there was an evolution that I really liked. Lightsabers are thicker than in the original trilogy, their colors are stronger and they look better. But there is a problem that bothered me, you saw little light reflected on objects and characters by those LIGHTsabers. Sequel trilogy: As much as I had problems with this trilogy, I admit they have the best lightsabers. They use the lightsabers from the prequel trilogy, but correct the problem I mentioned. You actually see the light from these lightsabers being generated and reflected into the environment and characters.

IMO this is unecessary... the blade is already thick enough like from the prequels... I just feel as if the white core should blend in a bit more with the blue light it emits. Otherwise it just looks like a plastic tube with LED lights. (And the lightsaber clashes should be WAY brighter like the ones seen in Anakin Vs Obi-Wan even though they are in a volcanic planet which is already super bright.. not to mention they need to fix the bounciness of those hits) Lightsabers should feel like energy beams that can cut through anything and get stuck when clashing with another lightsaber. The newer Disney lightsabers feel like Neopixel Lightsabers that dont actually cut through anything and just bounce when you hit a target.

Good work, but I don't think the thin blade works for this fighting style. Too thin a blade looks like someone wielding an 18th-century small sword, but swinging it like a medeival claymore...

The sabers in recent Disney Star Wars have been a bit off. Way too much lighting comes from them in dark spaces and the cores of the sabers are messed up in some(Season 3 Mando the sabers looking meh). This thin rework looks nice, but overall can't fix the extreme BLUE in this scene.

Not gonna lie I like the thicker saber. It feels better in my opinion. What I'm concerned about is that awful choreograph. Sadly I don't think you can fix that.

I see that this was a dropped idea. Just not liking how Disney's Star Wars has those suoer short lightsaber blades. That and they don't seem to be white blades with colored glows like they were in George Lucas' movies and the animated shows

I think maybe you've made them too thin. The difference between the LED blades and the original ones is very minute. And personally, I prefer them thicker, rather than thinner. The thin sabers in Rebels are gross.

I actually think the lightsaber being thinner works a lot better. I hate how the lightsabers in recent Star Wars just look and feel like big glow sticks. There's too much of a physical touch to them due to the props having an actual blade as opposed to the originals and the prequels where the props were much thinner, making the lightsabers actually look like they're clashing instead of just touching like they do now. Lightsabers in general just seem like big glow sticks now. Games like Fallen Order or the new Battlefront games feel like you're swinging around a bat, unlike past games like Jedi Outcast/Academy, or even the original Battlefront games, the lightsabers felt more ethereal, less physical.

Seriously? Noooo!!! With thin blades, it seems that they are fighting with swords, which does not look at all in the clone wars. Just because of this, I will not watch the finished product... alas...
