The GREATEST rock band of all time IMO. Phil's voice was strong and unique, with powerful thundering bass. Could also go slow and tender on songs and keep it cool. Brian Downey, his best mate from Dublin, is probably the most underrated drummer in the world. Brian knew where to keep it laid-back and simple, like "Dancing in the Moonlight" or when to unleash like "Shalala", while never missing a beat. Scott has so much style in his playing, melodic, driving, tasteful, and amazing stage presence. A true pro. All the other guitarists (and Wharton on keys), Brian "Robbo" Robertson, Gary Moore, Snowy, Midge, and the phenomenal John Sykes, were ALL world-class players. They set the bar for what a rock band can be. For those that have had the pleasure to know this group, you've witnessed where pure talent and never-ending determination can go. The legend lives on. Long live Thin Lizzy 🌹⚡️

i also am a Lizzy fan. just finished watching The Rocker, an old documentary on his life, again, and every time his mother talks about his last words to her, it breaks me. I am 4 years clean on heroin myself so I can sort of relate to Phil like that, knowing what he was going through in that addiction, I mean. very talented man who left us too soon.. i'd have to say my favorite Thin Lizzy song would have to be Waiting for an alibi.

Great set list as it is, but I think it could have been expanded with two songs that had Huey Lewis playing harmonica on them: "Baby Drives Me Crazy" and "With Love." If so, who would have played the harmonica on these versions (since Lewis at that time was now part of his own successful band)?

I remember in 1982 or 3 Thin Lizzy was in Dallas. I was at a local club, Mother Blues, and they showed up afterhours to play a show. It was like a normal 250 seat club with probably 400 people packed in. I got to go down and watch from the dance floor. It was so awesome. 8 feet in front of Phil Lynott. They played over two hours. I consider that experience THE hilite of my rock n roll life. Loud yet very well mixed and comfortable to listen to.

@@jasonboggs2835 Show some respect dude. Scott Gorham had been there from the Nightlife album when Phil decided he needed two guitarists and Scott was the one who forged the twin duel guitar sound with Brian Robertson that made Thin Lizzy so different from all the other wannabees. His guitar work on Lizzy albums is huge. Listen to him on Emerald from the album Jailbreak - if you even go back that far - his lead lines matched Robbo perfectly. Or listen to his melodic solo on Still In Live With You from Live And Dangerous. Its timeless. He played all the guitars on Bad Reputation accept for 3 tracks after Robbo was ousted from the band. Gary Moore said that working with Scott on the Black Rose album reminded Gary of what it meant to play with real genuine feel. Quite a compliment coming from Gary Moore. I can't image Gary would have had time for John Sykes because he sounds like so many other shredders. Think of Scott's solo in Waiting For an Alibi. He mirrors Gary Moore's solo perfectly, not just in the harmonies but even in vibrato and feel. Not easy. He was an integral part of Lizzy trademark sound. He and Robbo's solos never detracted from the song. They just supported it brilliantly. It was never about them. It was about them contributing something that would add to the music and feel and subject matter of the track. John Sykes in comparison was just a shredder. He was a one trick pony whose signature was some stupid pinched high note affair that he threw into just about every solo he ever did. That was his trademark. Impressive eh? He served a purpose as Thunder and Lightning was Lizzy's heavy metal album. The reason Lizzy chose that form of rock for their last album was because Phil and Scott were deep in the grip of heroin addiction and Phil had lost all creativity as a result as a writer. He just didn't care anymore. And when there is nothing left in the tank, heavy metal is so easy to do. In creative terms its as bad an album as it gets. Phil was dead not long after and Scott barely escaped with his own life. Looking back, few Lizzy fans even rate Thunder and Lightning and rightly so. Instead, if asked, the vast majority will tell you that Lizzy's glory days was when Robbo and Scott were in the band, followed by Gary Moore. John Sykes barely gets a mention. So when it comes to casting a shadow Jason, John Sykes was always in Scott's shadow, only Scott would be far too modest and too nice a guy to say so.

Brian fucking Downey. and by the way..people even inside the industry forget how young Brian was in the classic lineup. He was fucking 19 when they began tracking Jailbreak - and in my mind was already the more cutting lead guitarist (read: technical)...unreal. and I love Gorham to death - and the fact than an American was in the band. what a success story. what were we doing at 19 ?
@orac54
@orac54 8 жыл бұрын
+talpajam Brian Downey was the drummer, and one of THE great rock drummers. He is playing in the video above. Brian Roberston was one of the lead guitarists in the first two guitar line-up. He was brilliant, but flawed. HIs wah technique and phrasing ought to have made him one of the iconic guitarists in rock history. But he drank his talent away, tragically.

Sykes is an incredible talent and in my opinion fit the band so well at this juncture, just a shame that they couldn't knock it on the head, come back clean and fresh with this line up (sans Wharton) and have another go.

My brothers and I followed Thin Lizzy all over the lands in all kinds of weather, traveling long distances in batter old vans and cars often with very little money, we never missed a concert and would travel up to 100 miles away, no problem, the only concerts that we did not attend were their final tour, that was just too hard and sad to do, I could not understand why the greatest rocking band wanted to completely stop,someone should have set all t he boys down and sat lets meet up again in a year or two, they should never have been allowed to break up, this was a great sandless to Phil, it was like losing part of his family and I am sure that goes for all the other boys, they needed a good long break and a rest

Because Rolling Stone Magazine socks. They have say over who gets in, and have for quite some time. It's not even the RnRHOF anymore, with some of the rappers and others they have admitted in the last 10 or 15 years. It's a shame, there are many acts that still deserve to be in there(ROCK), and Thin Lizzy is definitely one. When there 1st LP came out, my friend brought it and some 'Lumbo' over and he put it on without showing me the name of the band. After I was 'sold' on the band(2 tracks)he showed me and said he didn't want me to be 'prejudicial' on the name of the band. I laughed and blew lumbo smoke in his face. Rocked with Lizzy ever since. Thin Lizzy was on fire. The Thin Lizzy lineup was Phil Lynott, Scott Gorham, Brian Downey, and Gary Moore who filled in for Brian Robertson. Robbo injured his hand the night before the tour started. Lizzy have been my favourite band since I heard Jailbreak back in the 70s. I've been overdosing on them ever since. My favourite album cover of all time? (by any band may I add) - CHINATOWN. However, I think there was a slight error because the back of the cover should have been the front. That Chinese dragon face is breathtakingly magnificent. It explodes in a frenzy of danger, energy, mystique, drama and beautiful menace. A true masterpiece, Mr Fitzpatrick. I tip my hat to you.
