Over my years in medicine I’ve had the pleasure of working with a countless number of brilliant and wonderful doctors… as well as a handful of docs I’d rather forget. While the vast majority of doctors are kind, intelligent, and have a strong moral compass, I’ve identified 7 types of doctors who are more like snakes hiding in the weeds. These doctors can be selfish, greedy, ignorant, or just downright mean. Whether they’re trying to sell you their own miracle cure, refusing to perform a physical exam, or judging your lifestyle, these doctors should be sent back to med school for some extra education. If you come across one of these doctors, run!
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

Second skit hit home. I went to the ER with severe upper abdominal pain. The doc walks into the room, at this point they've taken my vitals and nothing else. He asks what's wrong and I tell him. He lays me down and touches my stomach in different spots. He then says "you have appendicitis. We are going to need to operate." I look at him confused and tell him that that's not possible. He then gives me a lecture about how he went to medical school and his residency and all his years experience and asks me if I went to medical school. I looked at him and said "I don't need to go to medical school to know I can't be having issues with an organ I do not have. I had an appendectomy when I was 5". And I left.

Fun fact: when I was being born, the doctors in the hospital there kept giving my mom too many painkillers, and just left her when I was born for a while. She legitimately could've died there while no one was watching. What's worse is that it was a C section. My family have decided to never go to that hospital ever, as they did things like that REGULARLY.

THEY WERE GOING TO GIVE HER 600MG OF GABAPENTIN ! she knew that was wrong and was like “um no that not right can you please double check ?” turns out they read the order wrong/there was an error and it was only supposed to be 300mg. they almost doubled the dosage and would’ve killed her and didn’t even realize it until she asked them to double check. to me it’s the fact that the nurse or doctor who signed the order basically read “600mg” and didn’t question it is what scares me. we need more checks when it comes to medications. this is why people say pharmacists save lives 😂😂😂

My worst experience for a diagnostic with a doctor was when a urologist specialised in fertility said that my problem was just that I was overweight and should just lose weight. I had to insist vigorously to have juste a bare minimum blood test to see if there was something else. Turned out I had a tumor in the brain that was messing with my hormones. I changed clinic after that. Doctors who judge fat people like me and blame everything on their weight should receive extra training to teach them empathy.

@matthewbarabas3052 Let me put insight here. My mom became a drug addict because she was a physical abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse rape victim that has PTSD, d.i.d and chronic physical pain. My father became a drug addict because he had mental issues and was underdeveloped. He would steal just to get more drugs. Weed is a huge drug used to get rid of anxiety and pain. I know many people that use it for that, that become addicted to it. Telling them something so harmful like deleting their profile for being a decent human being is ignorant. Please research in the future. ❤️

I always tell them if it hurts. Reducing painful experiences makes me less hesitant to go to the dentist, which translates into better oral health for me. I’m there to take care of my health, not to silently endure pain. Any dentist worth their salt understands that what they do is uncomfortable for the patient and won’t get mad about it. If they did then I would switch to a new one

I was diagnosed with bipolar type 1 when I was 19. I will admit that I was a stubborn young adult who also had a lot of mental health issues. These two together caused me to take myself off my meds. That went fine for several months until I ended up in a psych hospital. The doctor looked me up and down the first day and said I was wasting his time because I stopped taking my meds, which isn't uncommon for psych patients. If he had asked, I could have explained exactly why I quit and what the barriers were so I would be less likely to quit in the future. But he didn't care. I've been to that hospital for inpatient and outpatient care many times and have had many bad experiences with that doctor. He is the worst doctor of any specialty (except maybe my childhood dentist) I've ever seen

…what did the dentist do
@gemstonejasper17
@gemstonejasper17 Жыл бұрын
@ThatNuggetIdiot I mean, technically that dentist didn't do anything wrong. Looking back, it was actually a smart idea for young kids. The problem was that I was 12 at the time. It was my first filling and I needed to have a shot. I didn't know this and at the time, I was petrified of needles. He tried to trick me by telling me to close my eyes until he said to open them. Being the curious 12 year old that I was, I opened them and saw a huge needle heading straight towards my face. I'm sorry, but that's traumatizing. I sat up and had my first ever panic attack. I was crying hysterically. He told whichever parent was there (I don't remember) that he didn't have time for this. Eventually, my parent was able to get me calmed down to where I could get the shot. But I have had a distrust of dentists ever since. My current dentist is amazing and has heard that story many times over. He knows to warn me before any needles come out. It's a little weird, but I watch every single tool that gets put in my mouth. Like I said, the dentist didn't do anything wrong per se, but as a 12 year old, it was traumatizing and has affected how I have interacted with dentists since

I know this was meant to be humorous, and you did a great job, but I honestly had to fight back tears. I have a little understood chronic illness, and I've had some of the worst doctor experiences. Doctors literally do so many of the things you portrayed here. It's such a shame. I cry before almost every new doctor appointment because I never know how rude they're going to be to me. I didn't even see a doctor for 4 years after one made fun of me. It's really hard being a patient. You feel broken, you finally reach out, and then you just get crushed. It's truly awful.

I was struggling with shoulder dislocations a lot. It happened at least once a week while playing sports and exercising. So I got benched from my basketball team. I then went to the doctor and she told me that I would just outgrow my shoulder dislocations. I thought this was crazy, but she cleared me to go back to play so I was happy. The dislocations kept getting worse so I went to a different doctor who wanted me to get an MRI. So I did and then found out that my labrum was detached from my bone. So I ended needed surgery. Truth be told when your shoulder frequently dislocates you are not going to outgrow it.

Your skits were incredible, funny, and very accurate! It is also important to remember that these scenarios are actually common to see in medical practice as a patient. I have had several instances with my primary care provider where he would hand me some piece of paper, tell me to get my blood drawn, and follow-up with him… Why am I getting my blood drawn? Where do I get my blood drawn? Is there a place in this clinic? Will it cost me money? Who do I talk to for the follow-up appointment, and when do I schedule it for? At the time, it was probably my first time going to the doctor by myself, and that experience just ended with a “see you next time” as if I was being handed off to someone else. But this isn’t just me. Many people experience such instances, which hinders a good doctor-patient relationship and rapport from being established. This also may very likely turn patients away from seeing a doctor because of this anxiety, uncertainty, and even mistreatment/disrespect. As physicians/medical students/residents, our first priority is the patient’s well-being, as well as providing autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice for the patient. With that being said, the scenarios that Dr. Mike has demonstrated for us in this video completely disregard those principles, which is a complete break of the Hippocratic oath. Thank you for the informative video, as well as a version of how we can be better medical personnel.

Despite how in shape I've been for my frame the first thing I have to talk about with almost any doctor is diet and exercise. I get strep throat 3x a year? diet and exercise. Pneumonia? diet and exercise. Medication resistant asthma? diet and exercise. I've had a headache every day of my life and they're starting to interfere with my quality of life? diet and exercise. My organs are gluing themselves together and I'm experiencing chronic pelvic pain and fatigue? diet and exercise. Frequent sinus infections? diet and exercise. I've wanted to die since 8th grade? diet and exercise. I despise the a-hole that invented the BMI scale cause doctors don't give a single f**** about anything I have to say once they have that number in their mind.

Reminds me of when I went to the doctor about changing my anxiety medication (because it was making everything worse instead of better even after 2 months), but he just said "yeah let's give you a higher dosage of the same medicine" like did you not listen to anything I just said? Later I had another doctor to consult about anxiety meds as well and she completely misunderstood and thought I had depression, then started questioning me when I didn't "seem depressed"... 💀 She also talked in such a weird way that the appointment left me super confused about everything... The only good doctor I have had is a young guy who explained everything to me in detail and actually took care of all my worries and problems inside the same appointment. I left the appointment with a burden off my shoulders and a clear goal in mind. That's how it SHOULD be.

@@christina113704 Agreed. I once really loved my neurologist because he helped me get the genetic testing I needed by connecting me with a charity (my condition is hereditary and requires a DNA test and my insurance wouldnt pay for it) but then as the years went on he started to brush off what I was telling him about pain (if he thought I was drug seeking all he has to do is look at my chart and see that my history shows no signs of drug seeking or even abusing, ever) he told me my condition doesnt cause nerve pain, only muscle pain...but the research on my condition and condition type says that it does cause nerve pain. So then the next year I brought it up again, told him about the research I found and he said 'other types of your condition cause pain but not yours' despite the research saying my type does. So I'm 90% sure I'm going to try to find a different neurologist, if I stick with neuro at all. It's not like there are any treatments or cures for my condition. All the neurologist does is monitor symptoms and check reflexes to make sure they're still not absolutely horrible.

@@BladefireA This aggravates me to no end! I understand doctors being skeptical when a patient seems knowledgeable ("oh look a google doc"), but outright dismissal? I've gotten very lucky with a couple of my doctors who actually value my input ("I read this study that said...") and they either mention whether or not they've seen it or say he'll look into it. My rheumatologist talks with me, not at me. If you had a good relationship with another doctor, you might go out on a limb and ask if they have someone they would recommend, not just the first doc an insurance will assign you to.

OMG #3 was my psychiatrist!! They were ALWAYS 15-30 mins late and had three modes: box checking, iN mY eXpErIeNcE ranting, and stubborn defensiveness. They demanded concise answers, kept asking the same basic questions, and then inaccurately projected other patients' stories onto me. I'd learned about depression in high school so that's what I called my prolonged burnout. They didn't question the diagnosis even when I gave them detailed accounts of quite typical symptoms and history of PTSD and ADD. I quoted the ICD, the DSM, and their own prescription timeline but they still didn't hear that the antidepressant wasn't working. I quit the meds cold turkey (DON'T) and used the last bits of energy filing a complaint. Had that not been enough to get a different psychiatrist, I'm frankly not sure I'd be here today.

Very funny but also a bit sad. I recently had a terrible experience with medical providers- my symptoms were abdominal pain, vomiting, alternating constipation and diarrhea, complete loss of appetite, and severe fatigue- lasting for over a month. The first GP I went to did NO physical exam at all, did not ask me ANY follow up questions (not even the standard ones like, could you be pregnant, do you smoke, do you drink) and then said "you are probably just dehydrated, go home and drink more water". Being unsatisfied with that, since I actually love to drink water, and consistently drink 2.5L per day, I saw a second doctor. They pressed on my stomach (it hurt), and then asked "Do you eat a lot of beans?" (I don't) "Because beans are bad for your liver, so you shouldn't eat beans". (I don't even like beans) "It's probably your liver, go eat fewer beans, and take this antibiotic in case it's an infection". !!!??? At this point I was understandably distressed, and sought out a third doctor who finally did some actual tests, and after extensive investigation (long story short) I have Chron's Disease, teamed with Magnesium deficiency. Be your own health advocate and make sure to seek out second opinions if your doctor is not actually listening to you or testing you.

My biggest indicator that a doctor is a good doctor is when they hold themselves accountable, and are willing to ensure they may be wrong about a diagnosis or treatment options, and that another doctors opinion may be helpful in such instance. Not in a lack of confidence way of course, but my radiation oncologist was not against getting a second opinion on my radiation burn treatment from other doctors with more experience is treating severe radiation burns. They agreed with his judgment and treatment of my case every time, but its still reassuring to see that he is ensuring I receive the best care possible, and that he is willing to question his judgment and admit that he is not always right, rather than be arrogant and stubborn about it.

It took TEN YEARS for someone to FINALLY look closely at my Xrays to see that the L5 area of my spine is actually fusing together! Which they acknowledged is actually very painful! But the other doctors claim it's not enough to require narcotics. The problem is that I'm allergic to everything else. This includes NSAIDs, Tylenol, and Muscle relaxers. But as soon as I tell them that, they assume I'm lying and INSIST I let them try those medications first before they try narcotics. You would think I would have only had to go through this once, but it's EVERY TIME. Like the first time they saw the reactions didn't count! And then they still refuse to give me the medications that are known to work and they want to give me the stuff I'm allergic to with BENADRYL! I'm pretty sure the hospital I go to is using methods that are considered malpractice. But because they're kind of the only major hospital on my small island I don't know who I can go to for help.

I'm a medical student and we're taught that when we perform exams that are personal, there should be another person in the room (a chaperone) like a female nurse or a family member preferably having the same gender as you. This is to protect both the doctor and the patient from legal cases. As a patient, you can also request for a female doctor so that you'll be more comfortable while this physical exam is performed. (We both went, but she made the appt etc) I knew why because I get the EXACT same kind of headaches he was complaining about...he wasn't getting enough sleep. (he was sneaking to stay up but swore he wasn't lol). The doctor wanted to send him to a neurologist, despite my objection! I refused unless we made sure it wasn't just sleep...so for the next few weeks when his head hurt I made sure he took a nap, and I would check and make.sure he was asleep at night. Low and behold, the headaches disappeared. My point is, find a doctor who is willing to listen to you and take your thoughts into consideration. My doctor now is amazing! He certainly doesn't just bark orders. For example, when I was resistant to getting on BP meds, he discussed my concerns and convinced me that the risk reward ratio made the meds the only rational option. Being his patient has created a higher level of trust in the entire medical system for me.

But when Mom asked the doctor to look at my cuts, he literally grabbed up and hand and dropped it back down and said I was having an allergic reaction. He put me on a medicine and sent me home. The day after I finished the meds, I woke up with a butterfly rash and a fever. Three days later, my fever was nearly 104 and I was getting worse and worse. My parents took me to Vanderbilt Children’s ER, where I was admitted with a high fever, severe dehydration, and an unknown illness that turned out to be-surprise!-MRSA. But the MRSA had, at this point, turned into toxic shock and sepsis. I spent 6 days in the hospital complete with emergency surgery. My case was even put in the Vanderbilt medical textbooks. If that doctor would have listened, I wouldn’t have had the sepsis or toxic shock, and I wouldn’t have the constant pain of fibromyalgia the sepsis left me with. I get angry every time I think about him, and I am very wary about going to that ER.

These bad doctor types are incredibly common. I've had enough experiences with doctors who tick one or more than one of these boxes that, when I actually get a doctor who gives me attention and respect, I feel odd, like I'm waiting to see what goes wrong (even if nothing does). It's definitely affected my interactions with all doctors, at this point.

I had a traumatic experience with a doctor that had most of these examples. I knew I was having a bacterial infection because it happens to me often. This is in another country. Employees tend to fake med certs from doctors and pretend to be sick. The doctor assumed I was faking and started yelling at me. He yelled at me to get out. The nurses around me started getting quiet. It was such an embarrassing and traumatic experience. I had to visit another doctor the next day and they diagnosed me with bacterial infection. I couldn’t breathe properly and had a slight fever that time already because the first doctor refused to help me.

Totally had a "hands off doc" a couple years ago. It was a follow-up visit to talk about a positive H pylori test and get some prescriptions. I said I also had swollen lymph nodes in my neck and she just said "H pylori wouldn't do that" and didn't even look at them. A week later I was in the hospital for an allergic reaction to the antibiotics (which wasn't anyone's fault, I'd never had them before so there was no way of knowing), and the ER docs were like, "yeah, those lymph nodes make no sense for H pylori or an allergic reaction, let's scan them". Results came back as possible lymphoma, later confirmed by a biopsy. If I hadn't had that allergic reaction, who knows how long it could have gone undetected.

Thanks for making this video and showing people behaviours they shouldn’t endure or tolerate from their medical practitioners.

I have two examples. Last year, I went to the ER because I was vomiting X 8 hours with no end in sight. The doctor told me, “sometimes vomiting is just vomiting.” The nurse noted that my emesis was by then pure bile, and made sure a CT scan was ordered. It showed my appendix on “the upper side of normal.” J was admitted for an appendectomy the following day, which was a Sunday. The surgeon walked into my room that morning and said, “I’ll be honest: last night was a shitshow and I’ve been doing surgeries all night.” These were the first words he spoke to me. He refused to do the surgery, and maybe he or the first doctor were correct, but both of their attitudes were horrible. I also had a pain management doctor who didn’t take my (state) insurance. He charged me $300 cash a MONTH to prescribe my medicine. My appointments consisted of coming in once a month and him saying, “Is the medicine still working? Okay, I’ll send the script to the pharmacy.” I want to report him, but I don’t know to where. (I’ve stopped seeing him; my PCP has taken over my pain management and saves me close to $4000 a year.)

I'll admit- I have an issue with looking people straight at their face. It's not something I do consciously, but I do tend to look away when my patients look directly at me. I didn't even realise it's a problem, and no one ever pointed it out to me throughout med school! Only recently did it occur to me that it's not normal and I need to work on it.

I hear you! I also have difficulty with direct eye contact. I like to use the forehead trick--that is, staring at the center of the person's forehead rather than at their eyeballs. It's much more comfortable for me, and I've found that very few people can tell the difference between this trick and true eye contact, so they don't feel as though I'm avoiding their gaze.

I once got dressed down by an OBGYN for having bad lab numbers. We had had a miscommunication regarding fasting for labs. I explained this to her. I’m sure it is annoying when patients do what I did. All she had for me was a lecture on my eating (which we already established wasn’t why the labs looked like that). Then she tried to tell me what to eat. I have ODD, so I don’t super react well to being told what to do. also I have a ton of food sensitivities (garlic, gluten, peanuts, ect) and I’m not interested in essentially being told to have heartburn and diarrhea because it is “healthier.” I didn’t go back. Just a few above average, and barely overweight. It caused no health problems or anything. I was also being hit by puberty like an insecurity truck at the time, and became extremely self conscious and paranoid about my weight, even though I was only a tiny bit over the average. I was starving myself, counting every calorie, there wasn’t a minute I wasn’t thinking about how fat I thought I was. It was awful. I know it probably wasn’t just the doctor’s fault, but it definitely fed into that. I’m wondering if it’s also because I was a girl, if some men just expect that we need to be skinny and perfect.

Back when I was a weightlifter, I weighed something like 150 pounds and since I'm only 5 ft tall the doctor, without looking up, said that I needed to make weight loss a priority because I was almost obese. As someone who had to religiously watch their weight, diet, and exercise regimen already, I was pissed. Actually, "pissed" sounds mild compared to what I actually felt like. I asked the doctor how many obese patients they had with a 27-inch waist in a very impolite tone. I'm not proud of that. I'd like to say that I walked out, but I did not. I did tell the receptionist that I wasn't scheduling a follow-up because I thought the doctor was an idiot, so that's something.
