It's one thing to be ignorant in someone else's country...it's annoying, but forgivable. The worst thing, was being American-born and raised, a citizen, and having to deal with these questions.... in America. From Americans.

+clash ongems in Chinese culture, one's "face" is one's good outward appearance and behavior. When one loses "face", they are basically shaming themselves, bringing themselves humility by breaking such mask.

The most common one: how do you learn how to speak English? Why do you speak English so well? Where are you reallllyy from? Dude, just because I am Asian doesn't mean I am incapable of learning another language. Also, speaking English in China is pretty common ya know? In addition, eating dog meat is not common in China. Thank you so much for your interest. :)

+Cherry Tung the questions are stupid that is true, but not everywhere speaking english is common, no matter where you are. I have a chinese friend I sometimes have to translate for. as example last time at the dentist, since she is nearly unable to speak any german and her english is not that much better. The english of the german dentist was also bad too, therefore I had to translate her bad english into german and reverse visa, since I haven´t started learning chinese yet. even in european countries there are many people (mostly adults and older people) that suck hard at english.

Chinese people bother with same questions as well ("Do you have a chinese girlfriend? When you will get married? Do you miss your parents? What your parents think about that you're in China?...) but between Lǎowài and locals, I will choose 100x times Chinese people. In most of cases they are far more generous, kind and helpful than foreigners. I feel more relaxed and familiar when I'm with Chinese people. You have to be a simple person, purehearted and respectful, and they will answer in the same way. Livio from Croatia.

I dont speak Mandarin I find its better to be a ting budong laowai haha, that way you can spend most of the time with no clue whats going on. I have not seen any kicking out of foreigners, since I came here there are more and more foreigners in Shanghai. Its very westernised nowadays. I dont care for any other city though I think Shanghai is by far the best and most international in mainland China. Economy from my point of view is only getting better, cost of living has increased but my pay has been increasing at a faster rate. Lots of money and opportunities to be had here in China and most foreigners living here agree with me. Anyway not everyone is going to have a good experience and I get that.

My favorite question to be asked is in fact "where are you from". The people around me ask each other that, implementing which county or city each one came from. If your from Nashville, you're a city boy, if you're from Hillsboro, you're a country boy. It works even when it is clear that I am Chinese. When they ask me that question, I answer it like a local with the accent and everything to solidify my birth as a Southerner, just like everyone else. It's fun, really. Now when they ask "what is your ethnicity?" I still answer it with equal pride and enthusiasm, if they want to know your ethnicity, that's when you know they want to get to know you and be friends. Regulars don't say a thing

@@shen921230 No comparison at all. These questions are not about avoiding awkward situations or lulls in conversation, the Chinese that asks these questions are genuinely ignorant and are seeking clarification for their own benefit. Westerners rarely strike up a conversation with a foreign stranger just to "kill time" or "avoid a lull"...trust me when I say, we don't care!

Then what on earth you are expecting for a freaking english name for chinese people? We didn't born in your country and grow up with the culture and environment that you grow up with,of course we don't know the meaning behind every name.So can you at least give us some kind of example of names that chinese should use instead of laugh about those names and walk away without any suggestions? We use that stupid names just because you can't read our names right and you guys hate to read it,for those people who's living in china or learning chinese, they can deal with it,but those regular people in western countries, they hate it,because you know we gonna laugh about it when those words comes out of your mouth just like what you gonna do when you heard those stupid english name of chinese people's got!And we don't know that mames like Bob is a stupid name, because you guys use it in so many movies and books, that's where we know these names,so we automaticly think that those names are what you are using, books is the best way to learn the culture right? You can't blame that on us and laugh about it, because if you know it's bad and it's stupid, why on earth you guys using it so many times in books and movies? And we give ourselves a bloody english name for your convenient that you can call us as comfortble as you can, even in china where you should learn our language if you want to survive there!I may took it too far,and I appologize if my words offended you,but that's the truth, that's what is happening.

I remember my first time in China telling a Chinese person how China was not what I expected. They immediately told me how China has air conditioners and cars because it is a modern country. That was not really what i had meant because I figure if i can find air conditioners in Cambodia i would find them everywhere else. I had expected that China would be like the Soviet Union where I had to have permission to go everywhere and that the police would be telling me where I would need to be going and when. When i was a child I used to dream about living in the Soviet Union and so far all the Communist Countries i have been to are nothing like the Soviet Union. I have been to China and Viet Nam which leaves Laos, Cuba, and North Korea. I do have to admit that I love China especially Liaoning. Liaoning is the closest I have ever been to Russia. Russia is the land where my heart is.
