I'd be careful if you plant to go outside of the major cities if you are or look American. Anti-American sentiment in China has been growing very quickly. The majority of people will still be very friendly, but there is a very scary minority that you need to be extra careful about.

@@AnzuBrief With the current situation yes I think you shouldn't have too much trouble, but if people staring at you with animosity bothers you may want to reconsider China for the time being (Taiwan is a great, always friendly alternative). Even in first tier cities you'll get vicious stares for a few days or weeks whenever the US does something that negatively affects China. Local places you frequent to buy food can also go from friendly to giving you the stink eye. It really is a horrible feeling, especially if you arrive and become complacent with how friendly people are only for it to instantly do a 180 and become a very scary place to live. As a girl nobody will rough you up, but if you do end up learning Chinese you will hear some rude and nasty remarks from Chinese men to their friends about you, or so I hear from some female western friends in China. If you can build up a network of friends things become a lot easier to bear, especially if you make friends with locals.

@@AnzuBrief I've not seen any reason to be concerned about safety. I've heard that China is one of the safest place. It's hard to do criminal activity in China because law enforcement authorities keep a close eye with variety of technologies. P.S: Respect is earned and it might need to be mutual.

Maybe its an Anglo thing? When i was in school, i remember one time we had a group of British exchange students attending our school for a few weeks. One day one of the exchange students comes up to me and asks "Do know where Darryl is?" (im paraphrasing, its been about 20 years). When i hear the name Darryl, I think he is asking about one of the other exchange students. So i reply "Sorry, I dont know who Darryl is. What does he look like?" The guy retorts "You do know him! I saw you talking with him earlier today". After talking a bit more, it finally dawns upon me that he is talking about one of my classmates named Tero. If he had attempted to pronounce "Tero", instead of substituting it with a vaguely similar sounding English name, i would have immediately known who he was talking about.

As someone who knows Mandarin, I agree, but for Americans who have no clue how letters X, Q, C, or ZH work in Mandarin, it can be a challenge.

No way, it’s hard to remember them! Especially when they sound similar in English! How am I supposed to remember who was who between Tian Hao, Jun Tao, Jian Hao, etc. Why do so many names start or end with the same sound, or rhyme?! 😫 It’s easy if you read Chinese, but Wang, Wong, Huang, and Hoang are all the same to me!

@@Poemi10304 the case that you've mentioned here is because they are pinyin( not the character itself), and the fuck up things about pinyin is that every place is different. China, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, as well as other Asian countries where there's Chinese living, their name in pinyin are often influence from that place or other culture that make the biggest influence on that place. For example, Hong Kong was a UK colony and their name are influenced by the English, so their Li(李) is Lee(李), He(何) is Ho(何)， Ge(葛) is kot(葛), Jing(景) is King(景), …etc.
