NZ was the first place in the world to have the bank card payment system, it was named EFTPOS simply because there wasn't a name for it at the time, and it just stuck, when it became available in other countries they came up with there own names. NZ has been a proving ground for many new technologies simply because it was a modern advanced economy and it wasn't too big, so set up costs less, and if things don't work out then it doesn't break the bank either.

No shoes has always been a thing in New Zealand. I guess because we are always outdoors or at the beach in the summer. And it’s just a nice thing to feel the earth beneath your feet. Just easy and comfortable. I hope you are being looked after by our people.

I am a kiwi. It is comfortable to not wear shoes. I think we get away with it here is because there is nothing like spiders and snakes to bite you and we spend a lot of time out doors on grass.

We don’t tip here as we expect businesses to pay their staff properly. Very few Kiwis tip and we absolutely hate being expected to do it when overseas.

ACC is for everyone in NZ. Visitors, tourists included. Every accident is covered, not just vehicle accidents. Fall off a ladder - ACC Cut your finger while preparing a meal - ACC Get hit on the head by a pensioner while robbing a bank - ACC (Yes this did happen!) All costs are covered too - Ambulance, Air Ambulance. Medical costs, operations. After initial treatment to keep you alive, there is some kind of approval process for longer term treatment / care. Obviously this only relates to the most serious of cases.

I'm in my 60s and I kick my shoes off whenever I can. But I no longer feel comfortable not wearing shoes on footpaths and in shops. But certainly in houses and roadways. It takes awhile to toughen them up in the spring so I can walk on gravel but I do this whenever I can. I guess I go barefoot because it makes me feel grounded.

Yeah. One thing... Allpress Coffee comes from Sydney. It's been around a fairly long time.. They shared their Roastery with Campos in Alexandria. I used to drink it at the roastery and they have a beautiful brekkie menu. I was also a Campos fan but they have been bought out recently by a Dutch company here.. Their beans are now available in Woolies.

While our minimum wage isn't huge it is a lot better than in many countries where servers need to rely on tips to make a decent living. Tipping is getting out of hand in some countries, esp the USA. I hope tipping culture never comes here. I want businesses to pay their workers properly and for people not to have to rely on customer charity to make a decent living.

Years ago, a English lady, recently arrived, commented to me, that she was shocked to see many Kiwis wearing no shoes, which to her, was a sign of poverty. I live in the UK, where there's a problem with littering. NZ is so much cleaner. There's a lot of broken glass around here that makes going barefoot unpractical. Walking without shoes is good for the health of your feet. It is probably more important that children's feet are not confined to shoes to allow their feet to form naturally. I am 67 years old and still go barefooted most of the time. Apart from birth defects problems with feet are caused by shoes.

Not wearing shoes is a tradition here in New Zealand. It started with kids losing their shoes while playing. One other one is women who wear long pyjama pants out to do their shopping. It is a common sight to see at gas stations and in shopping malls.

Hey from a Kiwi, Traffic in New Zealand is bad in a lot of places traffic congestion is really bad not just Auckland although it is worse there, sun is harsh is because of the hole in the Ozone layer, no dog leashes they are actually used a lot in some places it’s illegal not to have a dog leashed while your walking, wearing no shoes is normal- it’s also part of the Māori culture here that you take your shoes off when entering a house or some other special meeting houses, food prices here are terrible but it has alot to do with the fact that we import alot of stuff and grow a lot of our own produce,/dairy/eggs/meat so it makes it more expensive for the consumers coz if seasons/weather all that sort of stuff. We do have sweet pies- rhubarb pie, apple pie, apricot pie custard pie, I’m sure there are others and most bakery’s will sell the apple pies and custard pies. 🙂

In New Zealand it doesnt get as cold as the northern hemisphere in the winter time not even in the deep south ,yes we get the snow falls but its not as extreme as they do oversea's ,over in Japan you can see utube cips of snow build up like a wall wich looks to be three bus hights tall ....now thats a lot of snow wich doesnt happen here in NZ

I pay $80 a month for unlimited here in Perth, so it isn't much difference. Internet speed is a lot faster in NZ then it is in Australia. It's more expensive in NZ ,but it is faster.

Card is often assumed to be credit or debit card, which are offered through third party entities, like Visa or Mastercard and can come with various charges. Tipping is not encouraged, the price is the price, service and taxes included. Hopefully, hospitality staff are paid a living wage. This is not always the case. $80 is a lot for unlimited internet. $65 for unlimited wireless broadband seems pretty standard. In Auckland, anyway.

Coffee is great as well coz made with grass fed cow milk. Expensive stuff especially if it comes from o'seas coz of freight costs and global market increases. Pays to grow as much produce of your own. Agree with others. Technologies like bank card/eftpos systems and a lot of technologies actually started and trialled in NZ first coz smaller country and progressive. Good fair vid with your observations.

The prices of fruit and vegetables changes greatly depending if it's their growing season. Perfect example of this is the cost of tomatoes which drop at least 50% or more.

The prices of things like tomatoes and zucchini tends to go down the further north you are. Simply because it's warmer.

Honest opinions, thank you :) . Is New Zealand expensive in some things? yes it sure is. But, Look at it in perspective. New Zealand's population is just over 5 million with the majority of that population in the smaller North Island. The Larger South Island has only about 1/3rd of NZ's population. We are not like a lot of other countries which have millions of people. You have millions of people then naturally things should and are cheaper. NZ has a large area with a small population. Tradeoff of that is you get vast open areas with little or no people. Downside is costs are higher as does not have the population to support it as easy. For me, living here I would much sooner the vast open spaces with little people than lower costs anyday :) New Zealand's remoteness is both a curse and a blessing. Curse in the fact it is much harder to get tourists to come here simply because of the high costs of getting here. A blessing because we do not have vast tourist numbers our environment for the most part remains pretty good. And apart from the major tourist towns we are not drowned in people. Sure we have some areas which need some serious work and it is being worked on .... But for the most part NZ is a pretty great place to live and work :)

In Qld in the old days, it wasn't a thing. I still try to go barefooted as much as possible. I hope to cross the ditch for a visit before I die. I have Kiwi friends and my cousin moved there, worked in the railway married a Māori woman. Both are dead now. Think I shared enough.:-)

No doubt the cost of living here is quite high but its easy to single out certain items that are out of season at the time and use them as an example in these videos. Importing relatively small quantities (on a global scale) of produce to an isolated country down the bottom of the world is going to mean high prices.

I have a theory about why the sun seems so bright in NZ. NZ is in the same latitudes as Spain, people don't remark on the brightness of sun in Spain because its a warm country. NZ has cold seas that lower the temperature so its like living with the climate of Southern England/ Northern France but with the intensity of sun of Southern Spain.

The tax one is interesting. 25% on average, possibly about right, compared to 45% or so in Europe? Have you included GST or VAT type taxes in that? GST is 15% so that brings NZ to 40% already. That ACC you mentioned, it's not free, there's a tax for that, depending on how you look at it as to who pays, but it effectively comes out of your wages before you even get them. Local government tax or rates as we know it, presume other countries have that, in our case it works out at about 5 - 10% of our income. Then there are things like petrol tax, I think America doesn't have it, but at least parts of Europe do? It's not an insignificant amount. There are many forms of tax and I suspect our government isn't noticeable more efficient than others, it's just a matter of how you pay it. We don't like to think about just how much tax we actually pay but I suspect it's actually well over 50%

In regards to the sun - in the 80's, scientists stated that the hole in the Ozone layer is right above NZ, so the UVA & UVB radiation is higher, fear not as the hole has been slowly regenerating since the world had become more known about climate change. Have you thought about possibly growing your own cherry tomatoes? you can even have them growing inside your house and they taste absolutely delicious straight after plucking them from the hanging vine. Another option can be Farmers Markets, where Farmers congregate to sell their wares without going through supermarkets where they add their mark-up on top of the farmers, plus you can possibly find other things that supermarkets don't have, if you don't know where they can be just call up an information centre to find the nearest market and times.

Unlike most European and the Americas, we don’t import fresh food. The price goes up if the food is not in season. I found overseas fresh food very bad. I prefer to to pay more for my food knowing that it is of high quality. Unfortunately the pollution from the countries in the Western Hemisphere have created a hole in the ozone layer. So our clean, green country is been affected by the selfish pollution causing overseas countries.

It helps going shoeless here that we don't have much that poses a danger to you in terms of wildlife, parasites etc. So nobody thinks it really matters (so long as your feet aren't cold or getting cooked on hot ground under that burning Summer sun). Our social/class system is so flat as to be almost non-existent too - so whether you're wearing shoes or going barefoot doesn't denote anything about you other than you like getting around barefoot. :-)

You were asking about why people go barefoot sometimes. As someone who spent periods of my life sans shoes, sometimes you just don't feel like it. Like, sometimes, after nightfall, people put on what look like pajamas and are content to go to the supermarket or to get fast food wearing them. Just don't feel like getting properly dressed for something so informal as fast food or... y'know, food. I guess it's part of a culture of being casual and accepting of differences.

New Zealand is paradise...not perfect, as just like any place we have crime, bigotry, intolerance and hatred.....We have pollution, problems with the 'throw away society', just like all countries. Having a very high proportion of skin damage from an intense sun, we also have a damp and wet climate with arthritis as a common aliment ....but above all things, we have an advanced economy, have a strong social, democratic society, freedom of expression and excellent technological standards. With that NZ has an excellent outdoor culture....for a small country, the landscapes are massive, waters are cold, yet clean, and with that being said.....New Zealand smells good....With year round scented flowering shrubs the air always smells good.....one last thing....Kiwi's don't live in air conditioning....if you come here, try opening your windows and doors, you don't need to waste electricity cooling a room that will be cooled by the breeze.

No, you are mistaking relaxed and open, for Friendly. NZers are not - Unfriendly... But in terms of being a "good-friend", Kiwi's are really not so good at that. Friendship is definitely limited. Yes, feel free to come over and visit - but you can have 1-2 hours of my time - then bye, time for you to leave. Where as I have seen that overseas, it is a lot more difficult to get to know people, but once you are accepted into their circle, you are totally accepted in, and pretty much live in each others pockets from then on. Kiwi's don't do that.
