After watching numerous videos on the Ford F150 5.4 3V Triton engine I decided to cure the problems before they occur. On mine I replaced all of the spark plugs at 22,000 miles and again at 55,000 miles applying anti size lubricate on all Motorcraft plugs. I also replaced all of the exhaust manifold studs and nuts with stainless steel studs and nuts again applying anti size on the threads to the studs when installing them. I even sprayed anti rust lubricate and a coat of heat resistance paint on the exhaust manifolds. I have a 2005 Ford F150 Lariat 4 door 4 wheel drive truck. I then installed two additional outside filters one for the power steering and one for the automatic transmission. If you look under the truck you will see three filters on it and they are all the same as the original FL820S Motorcraft oil filter. Every second oil change I change all three filters, the oil, transmission, and power steering filters. I am a firm believer on preventative maintenance. UPDATE: I also removed the original Transmission pan from FORD and replaced ir so I could install the FUMOTO valve which I also have on the oil pan as well. So when I drop the pan on the transmission I don't have a mess wih the oil splashing all over the place, just open the valve and drain the fluid directly into milk cartons. I wasn't satisfied with the heat resistance paint so I removed both exhaust manifolds and sent them in to JET HOT CERAMIC COATING IMHO money well well spent. The coating on the manifolds will never chip, crack. peel or change color.

I agree completely with your advice. That being said😁....I had an 01 f150 5.4..one time I let it go 25k miles w/out an oil change and put 240k miles on it before selling it! Only issues it ever had were coil packs and an alternator! Love these trucks and yes I’m ashamed of letting the oil change go so long. When I did change it, I cut the filter open just out of curiosity and the paper inside just crumbled in my fingers! Yikes!!

I just got the same one extended cab all WD Whit 115 K motor is very good has some rust paid 5,900 no problems yet looks like the maintenance was done all the time

The spark plugs are not an issue once you change them the first time. You just need to put the newer style plugs in there and you will never have a problem when changing them again. They only made that designed for 2 years 2006 and 2007. Even if you areon the original plugs there are things you can do to minimize problems, there are plenty of videos on here explaining it. If you are going to do a change on the original plugs I would definitely recommend getting the extraction tool made 4 those plugs just in case. It will definitely come in handy and save you a lot of money if you have any problems. As far as the aftermarket cats go there are some good ones that don't cost that much. I actually replace mine with high-flow cats when I was doing my exhaust and I didn't have to move anything. I have not had any issues with cam phasers or anything else, it's been a good engine and I've got two hundred thousand on it now. If you don't do the maintenance I suppose that could give you some problems, but then again that would be the case with pretty much anything.

My grandpa had a 2003 Ford F-150 with the 5.4 triton. That truck had 386,000 miles when we sold it. He took care of that truck maintained it like a baby never had any problems with it. Honestly I believe most of these videos you make about the ford motors aren’t major problems if you prevent them from happening.

I would agree with that. However these engines, especially the 3v, are very sensitive to a skipped oil change or any negligence. The design of the spark plugs is one of the biggest engineering fails in the last 50 years. Check out the wizards video on the 5.4. Anything goes wrong = new engine.

97-03 were the 2v very good motors these problems mostly start 04 and up when they came out with the 3v

I've got one in my F-250 and I don't like it. It was a 'barn find' I got from the original owner with just 40k miles. It was misfiring all the time, has and exhaust leak due to a broken head stud, and has an oil leak (looks like from the head gasket). I've replaced plugs only to have it misfire again later that same year with light use. I chucked the motorcraft stuff and put in all MSD Blaster coils and iridium plugs and haven't had an issue since. It's also fairly gutless and just doesn't have the low-end grunt that even the GM 5.3, much less the 6.0 has. I like the pickup, but the 5.4 should never have made it into the Super Duty platform IMO. It gets the job done and the price was right though.

Just get one with a 2v 4.6 and most of those problems you don't have to worry about. If you ever have to change the timing chain tensioner put the upgraded iron one on instead of the plastic one.

this is a great video, much good advice. I wish you had videos describing other late model trucks and their known issues. I personally prefer old trucks, but it would be nice to have a newer one if I found one that I could deal with the known issues.

This is a great video. Ive been looking at GMs and Chevys in the 05 range but it's really hard for me to find what I want at the price I want. (Extended Cab, long bed). I started looking at Ford's and there are many more available in that configuration at a much lower price. I'm a mechanic as well, but my work is specialized and don't get to work on a ton of different stuff but I'm aware of the issues. I just hate hunting for vehicles and having to look at 20 different vehicles and all the potential issues.

Bought a 2000 F-150 XL four years ago. 5.4 Triton with 90,000 miles, paid $5,500, perfect condition. I already bought a 1997 F-150 4.6 nine years ago that I dearly love. I was amazed at how much lighter the 2000 XL is. I put gas shocks on it and it's a nimble little hot rod. It runs great and has made me money.

I got a 205 F150 purchased new. The PCM went bad, so Ibought a used one for 150 at a junk yard and had Ford dealer install it.. No problem. At 290,000 the original starter failed and I had a new one installed. I have the original trans with no problem, original alternator, no problem, original catalaytic converter, tailpipe and muffler, no problem. Power window motors, no problem. Yes, spark plugs are a pain, and I take in for that removal and replacement. It has by far been the most reliable truck I've ever owned, and it beat out my 1994 F150 with that great inline 6 motor that also was never a problem. I now have 306,000, and it runs great. I will take it in to have the original timing chain, and cam phase tensioners, and phasers replaced, but I am on the original timing chain, and they recommend to change it every 100,000 miles which I never did. But I DO only use fully synthetic motor oil in it. I chose Royal Purple which I buy at O'Reilly's here in Michigan, but even Walmart sells it. It's quiet, and I love it. Very reliable vehicle for me, and I pull a trailer every day. Good luck in your decisions.

I own an 06 with 170k and no problems and I change these plugs regularly at the ford dealership I work at. The early model 5.4l plugs seize in there if they are left in for 150k but even if I break 7 out of 8 it still doesn't take but an extra 10-15 mins extra per plug. The cases of plugs blowing out of heads are usually from some shade tree mechanic not getting them tight on the harder to reach plugs. And I've seen many cheap after market plugs fail and break or burn the electrode off just from normal driving. I would never put anything other than motocraft plugs in them and I only put anti seize on the smooth shank near the tip, not the threads. The threads arent the seizing issue it's the tip that seizes in the head.

Awesome video!, I have on 04' and babied it and got 260,000 miles out of the motor before the cam phasers let go. I had a Ford remanufactured 5.4 motor put in and it has a 100,000 mile warranty. I'm approaching 300,000 miles now. I was told by Ford the remanufactured motor has the spark plug and cam phaser problem solved, hence the 100,000 mile warranty. I thing you hit upon everything to look for in a used F150. Thanks for posting!

Sounds about my experience too, 178000 on my 2004. Fords and Dodges have exhaust manifold issues. That -40 to +40 c temperature swing doesn't help, thankfully we don't use salt on our roads so the rust is a bit slower to develop out west. Every make and model has their own unique quirks, seems like each generation is built to a lower standard for durability.

My '99 bought new 5.4 4x4 F150 had the failed right head gasket (45k). After warranty repair it ran 258k with regular scheduled maintenance. Finally went to Ford heaven at 329k (body). Good maintenance long lasting, couldn't complain. Hoping the '17 F150 with the 3.5 EB 4x4 does as well.

203,700 on my 05 XLT 5.4. Just did a timing kit and one bad cam phaser. Still runs great and pulls my 18 foot car hauler with ease. Just routine maintenance, use Motorcraft oil and Motorcraft oil filter. Very good truck.

Glad I saw this video. There is a dealer about 3 houses from me and he has a BEAUTIFUL 04 F150 that is fully loaded right down a moon roof. I stopped and he said $3400 for it...I was skeptical and even though there is not a speck of rust anywhere and it runs like a top with 180k, I am clueless when it comes to what to look for. Now I will be going over it with a fine tooth comb and getting that price lowered lol.

I own a 2008 silverado 2500hd gas, and at work we have fords i drive an e150 service van with the 4.6 and we have f250s 5.4 with over 300,000 and its not just the mileage theyre running all day 6 days a week theyre really good trucks all of them have issues but if you take care of them they will last a long time

Thank you so much for the most helpful video. You do indeed have a load for helpful followers. Spend almost an hour reading all the comments and gained a plethora of info. I am looking for a used truck and was told Ford's are the best. I am not so sure now and am expanding my search to GM and Toyota. Need to stay under $14000. Had planned to look at a 2010 F150 with 130k miles with a 5.4 but have scratched that off the list. For what it means I live in the Northeast and see 10 times as many GM trucks on the road as I see Fords.

You make quality content, thank you. Have a 2003 f150, been chasing a lean bank 1 code for a few weeks. Have replaced all 4 oxygen sens, all 8 plugs with motorcraft plugs, idle air control valve, mass air flow sensors, air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve, and vacuum hose assembly. Light went off and stayed off for a day, just came back. Grrr. 208K miles.

And why didn't you just do a smoke test and read the fuel banks and O2 sensor live data in a OBD2 reader. Don't chase it, diagnose it. Saves you time and money instead of just throwing parts at it.

Update 3 years later. I did fix that CEL, but don't remember what caused it. Engine later threw a rod at 250k miles and seized. I pulled the engine and have been rebuilding a used engine to put back in, nearly done, but in the meantime bought a 2011 5.0 so haven't veen in a rush.

As an owner of the same generation F150, even though this was a long list of problems, its not compete. The hubs on 4x4 models are vacuum operated and they put the module for that right under a water path so when you get water in the lines your truck will try to lock the hubs on you going down the road. Ford made an updated part that I guess it better but something to look out for. Also the fuel pump driver module is made out of aluminium and its mounted on a steel frame rail. Dissimilar metals = corrosion so you'll be driving down the road and your truck will just shut off. If you're looking at a truck of this vintage, I'd go with GM or the Japanese.

I got my Dad's 2004 Ford pickup 5.4 Triton which he hardly ever drove and I've had it for almost 4 years and it has about 29K miles on it. I hardly ever drive it myself. It's been a great truck.

@@oldephraim8771 I don't know man I work on them all and have owned them all and let me tell you this from experience I've had much better luck with ford where I work we do Diesel heavy equipment truck and automotive repair and as far as newer stuff these day ford are better even the fleet of service trucks we have tow trucks Ford's have been better and my boss owns an oil and propane company and the fleet of service trucks and vans least problem in gas is the Ford's with vans with 300 k on them with 3 valves and there still going strong I've pulled many more engines on Chevy's with broken cam locator pins for vvt actuator and bad cams due to bashed out lifters than Ford's and Ford's I can wedge the chain and replace the cam if need be Chevy's have to pull the heads to fix the lifters and for the dodges have pulled many hemis apart more so that 3 valve engines due to mushed out cams and lifters

I'm looking at convert a 5.4 to new type of electric conversion experiment as I might have a new way to push the pistons in this engine. I can go with a simple shift transmission controller and I shouldn't have to worry about 90% of the problems you highlighted. Wish me luck, Thanks for the video, God bless.

i love buying the 1997 to 2003 4.6 i think it is the most reliable older ford truck you can buy i see them with 400k and still running there not great for towing heavy loads but great on fuel

Can confirm at least on the exhaust studs issue. My '99 F-250 "barn find" was already ticking at just 40k miles. I'm at about 65k miles now and have been procrastinating it since it's not 'too bad' and has been able to pass inspection (so far). I just make sure to get it nice and hot before taking it in.

First time i ran indo that two piece spark plug I was tuning up my boss's f150. OH MAN. My heart sank. I had never heard of that (heard of them striping, but not breaking off) thankfully a call to another mechanic friend of mine led me to a special tool solution. but man, who ON EARTH thought that was a good idea? :p

I bought mine back in 2015 and it’s been strong at now 170k. I keep up on the oil changes and right away when I bought it I had the spark plugs changed ford even said after they did it that I had one of the better 5.4s they’ve seen. It does have the tick but once you drive it and it warms up you can’t hear it, I also listen to the radio pretty loud too haha. I’m also pretty sure an old man had it before I did cause it was a standard white truck with a camper shell and steps on the side which I took both off and put on a leveling kit with 33 tires and black rims. I think it depends on the truck and how it was maintained mines not too rusty cause I live in California and it’s been maintained well

A little more about the 11th generation F-150..... the 5.4 3 valve Triton engine that came with most of these trucks have cam phaser issues which occur by not changing oil enough. Bad spark plug issues where the spark plug head breaks off into the engine. Power window regulators go out every once in awhile, and the third brake light leaks sometimes which causes water to get in the cab corners and it will Rust Out. and did I mention oil pumps could go out around 200k miles. My dad had one of these trucks and it had rear end problems, such as if you turn in reverse it will make a loud clunking noise. Transmissions are normally great on them.... but my dad's truck it always started always drove forward always backed up, but then the day he sold it when they guy was looking at it he went to start it up and it didn't start😂 because of a bad battery.

Thanks for your Great videos. I appreciate the straight no bs approach. I bought my F150 xlt, xtr supercrew 4x4 with variable valves and 6 speed auto new in 2010 now 2018 it has 120k KM / 70 K miles Always been on top of the maintenance. so far ; ) Maintenance plan was included at 50 k Canadian = say about 40 k US I am aware of some of the issues of older trucks prior to 2010 like manifold leak specially cold start in Canada in the winter - 20 to -30 C but quite down when it worms up. Yeah mine too. I know $1,800 plus Lol. I Had very few issues with mine. So far. Works great. Love it. Please tell me that Ford has improved since 2010 or what I should look out for. I have the same vehicle and I'm at 243k miles just watch out because about 10k miles ago I had the intake manifold crack and spew coolant everywhere and had to replace the intake which is apparently somewhat common, but I've owned it since 128k and that was the first major issue.

I have an 07 4.6 with 176k miles and it runs like a dream. Just gotta do maintenance and check for noises,fluids and leaks and rubber wearing. The last thing Ive done was replace a worn out output shaft seal that was leaking trans fluid. The part cost $22 and I did it myself.

I just bought a 2000 f150 v6 5 speed for $1800. Its rusty and banged up but its just gonna be a run to the dump type truck. Goes down the the road great..no rattles..or bad habbits. Like your vids

To avoid breaking sparkplugs, run the engine hot and use remove all the bolts on the coil packs and remove all the plugs. Use an impact gun to remove all the sparkplugs for the rear plugs youll need a swivel and a long extension.

ibidu1 did mine hot too. Only broke one plug and it was the last one because the engine cooled down. Also used carb cleaner down the plug holes when they were cracked loose and that seemed to wick down and clean up some shmoo

Isaac H brother I had my mechanic tell me he wouldn’t do my 5.4 3v on my Expo for that same reason, he didn’t want to risk breaking any of them and having to take it to the dealership to fix it. He flat out told me im better off paying what ever they charge me. I bought the extracting tool and had only one of them break on me but removed it with no issue! Thank the LORT for that Lisle plug removal tool💯

I'm glad I own a 2002 F150 with the 5.4 2 valve since new. I had only one coil go out so far and changed the plugs at 100,000 miles Got 135,000 miles now and running great

@@christopherdutro168 I have 179,000 miles on it now. I changed another coil, intake manifold gasket, air conditioner compressor, rear leaf springs, and rear brake lines. Considering that a decent new truck goes for at least $50,000 I'm glad I hung onto it. Thanks for your interest

Yeah, they're not bad. Some problems with defects in the intake manifolds and heads but they'll still run. If you replace those parts be prepared to fight stuck bolts and maybe break a couple. The engines are decent for hauling but don't expect good mileage or fast acceleration, even when unloaded. Worst part on those are the transmissions. And if the motor cuts out while driving could be in the pcm. Been there. The engine is the better part of the truck on those dodges.

Broke more than my fair share of Chevy springs, not quite sure where you're going with that. As far as trucks issues per manufacturer, Ford had the 5.4, Chevy had the 4L60e. Both had huge issues. The 5.4s issues, to me, were easier and cheaper to deal with. The spark plug issue just takes a little work and experience. Doesn't matter what name is on the title, they all have their own intrinsic issues.

Steven couldn't have said it better! I know a guy who bought the so-called reliable Tundra and his engine blew at 40K. There is no perfect manufacturer. My buddy has a 4.6 F-150 and has over 300 K and still going strong. Again they all have problems just pick the one you want to deal with.

I owned a 2006 F150 with a 5.4. The motor was a gas guzzling DOG, no power. The motor would make spark plugs go dead every 6 months like clockwork. I changed the coil packs too, still did it. Air cond was crap too, had it worked on, just never got very cold. The vents were always screwed up, But..... it ran and ran, never any major issues, as a whole never had to put a lot of repairs like cam followers, new heads, cats. IT had 125000 when i bought it and put 120000 on it and decided my luck was running out. All and all, I loved it. GREAT factory stereo and speakers. Now I own a dodge durango, it guzzles gas, LOUSY stereo blown speakers, and rough ride. I plan to trade it for another F150 this spring. I will never buy another dodge again, just not the quality. Everything inside is cheaply mad, crummy cheap plastic that breaks.

wish i seen this about 3 weeks ago lol picked up a 08 f150 ran fine in the test drive but on the way home 30min in to the trip stop at a light and it stalled then started and stalled again got it home went to a shop and bam 5k to fix the damn thing i just paid a 100 for so i sold it for 1500 lol

Ford is still the #1 selling truck. I've been satisfied with every one I've owned. Every manufacturer has issues due to poor engineering of some area or another. Also a lot of issues are assembly line worker related and the day it was built. I've been driving for 55 years and can say, Own enough vehicles and you're bound to have that one you wish you'd never bought!!

Well said James! People give Ford a lot of crap but their quality has improved over the last couple decades. Plus there are so many on the road that you can find parts easy and for relatively cheap. I've owned 2 Ford Rangers and 1 Toyota Tacoma, and the Tacoma was a much more expensive Truck to repair.

I had a 04 5.4 Triton I had to replace the spark plugs twice in about 4 months. It had 172,000 miles, sold it and now I'm looking for another 150 after my Jeep is getting a little run down (217,000) miles! This '07 150 I'm looking at right now has 25 service records, no accidents, 162,000 miles. I hope I get this one!

You mentioned the cam phaser problem but didn't go in the horror story that it can be. If you hear ticking upon startup it could be the timing chain tensioner and/or cam phaser problem. It's a nightmare and runs $1200 up to $3000 depending on if you can do the work or you take it to a dealer. This is for all the 3 valve per cylinder Tritons. I lucked out and bought a 2005 F150 with a 2 valve 4.6L and totally avoided this issue (no Variable Valve Timing on 2 valve heads). The F150 forum is the place to go for detailed information.

I was between one of these and a chevy, when I asked what the last mileage the spark plug were changed at, the owner went "uhh....iunno??". Beyond happy with my LS powered chevy truck and avoiding a $1,000+ bill for broken ford spark plugs.

Great tips, im on my 10th ford currently driving my 99 F150 with over 200k. I worked for ford so i guess its a subconscious decision. But i have enjoyed driving them too bad they are not a better Comp regarding the manufacturing of these models. Its such a well liked truck to some. Had a 98 Expedition with a 4.6l, lots of misfires, plug and wire changes. Kept a can of MAF cleaner when the CEL came on, I could always tell if had a misfire. Kept it for 300k until my wife sold it while I was at work. I'm a fan of the newer trucks with the 5.0l in them and will steer away from a Triton unless its low miles.

2005 King Ranch 5.4 Three valve, I have taken very good care of this truck. 135,000 miles last week it dropped one of the valves, having to replace the motor. Sucks, but it's much cheaper than buying a new one.

GM's are worth it just for the LS motors. Cam in block is much simpler and they're extremely durable
