Two things. First, I'm pretty sure Ken meant Richie HAVENS, not Ritchie VALENS, since the latter passed away on "the day the music died" in 1959, and "Here Comes The Sun" wasn't written until 10 years later. Second, Allan is correct, per Universal Music Group's notes on Barry McGuire's "Yesterday" on KZfaq, which states that The Mamas and the Papas were the backing vocal group.

Halfway through the truly wonderful The McCartney Legacy. In my house, it will be referred to henceforth as the “New Testament.” It will be adjacent on my bookshelf to Tune In which shall be the “Old Testament”

When I was a kid I read somewhere that Joe Cocker's version of "With a Little Help From My Friends" was better than the Beatles' version. When I then heard it, I was shocked because I thought that it had nothing to do with the pop charms of the original and he could used any tune as a the basis for his song. I think I generally do not like cover versions that use Beatles melodies as a pretext for something completely different. The result may still be great, but not as a different take of a Beatles song. At the moment, I just have two cover versions that I really, really love, namely "Across the Universe" by Fiona Apple and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Regina Spektor.

I agree with Ken's choice of 'Here comes the Sun' by Richie Valens. It is available on his 'Beyond the Grave vol 1' album. It has a 'real spooky feel'.

Chicago also covered "I'll Be Back" in their early days. There's a bootleg from a 1968 gig that includes it.

The Residents version of Flying is fantastic. The Residents, who I would call the “avant-garde Beatles of the underground” have many Beatles references in their history, from their satirical Meet the Beatles cover of their first album Meet the Residents, to their version of Hey Jude on their psychotic lol experimental album of 60s pop covers, The Third Reich and Roll, to their single “The Beatles play The Residents, The Residents play The Beatles”/Flying. A fascinating band, who people actually thought may be The Beatles when they started putting out music around ‘72, being anonymous as they are. Definitely a band you guys should be aware of, especially if you have ears for adventurous music.

I think songs like "Hold Me Tight" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" worked very well as sung by women.
