This is amazingly informative. After watching this, I immediately ordered the two volumes in the Divine Curriculum series about the Báb. At only a quarter of the way into Volume 5, Part 1, so much more history than I previously knew is opening new vistas to me.

On the motivation of Sam Khan: Since he was a Christian, and being aware of the saintliness of the Bab and His followers, as Mr Price has pointed out, it is almost certain that he would have seen the parallels with the martyrdom of Jesus--a saint Whose teachings had so upset the religious authorities that they compelled the government to execute the saintly person. Thus, from a religious perspective, it is entirely understandable why Sam Khan was reluctant to take part. As to the miraculous nature of the event, there is no doubt that it was miraculous to some degree, although the exact degree may be open to interpretation. It might be useful to get an exact rendering of the Bab's statement to Sam Khan. "If your intention be sincere..." might also be rendered as "if your purpose be lofty" or "if your aim is high", "the Almighty is surely able to relieve you from your perplexity." Aiming high is, of course, exactly what happened, as the bullets severed the ropes above the Bab and Anis. This sort of double meaning works in English--I don't know if it is similar in Persian. But conceivably, the Bab's words may have inspired the thought in Sam Khan's mind. It is also true that his entire regiment was Armenian Christian (Armenia was the first country with a Christian king, even before Constantine became Christian). They may have had similar misgivings. He might even have passed along a comment that anyone who had misgivings is allowed to aim high. Assuming that at least one bullet would find its mark, no individual could be blamed for missing. But the fact that all 250 of the soldiers in the first row took this to heart and their bullets therefore all missed, is still pretty astounding. Of course, one might also note the there were 3 rows of muskets, presumably 250 in each row. After the first row was discharged, the billow of the smoke from the 250 muskets blocked the view of the 500 solders in the other two rows. Some of them may have had their muskets pointed directly at the place where the Bab and Anis WERE, but after the first volley severed the cords, the Bab and Anis were on the ground, amid a cloud of smoke rather than being suspended above, against the wall. Thus, it is very understandable that the remaining 500 soldiers would have missed, even if they had held their muskets steady after the smoke obscured their view. The location of the Bab and Anis had changed, but the aim of the 500 muskets had not. Moreover, the impact of the 500 bullets--some aimed correctly--would have hidden the fact that the first 250 were either high or left or right of the mark. Still it was miraculous enough that no one in authority protested when Sam Khan stood forth afterwards and commanded his soldiers to leave, and swore that he would not repeat the task, even at the cost of his own life.

Thank you so much for filling in knowledge not previously known. I wondered about how Sam Khan as a police official previously in Mashad handled any complaints about the Bab at that earlier time.

Thank for all your research and the unique stories to share with us. There few controversies about the No of bullet that the First squad shouted at Bob. Nabil Narrative and foreign historian both have mentioned different Numbers. Also according to some Islamic books the Muslim believes that Bob never directly claimed that he is the Promised one.. I do hope with all the reference books we have we get clear answers to all of these issues. God bless you for your effort.

I just want to contribute a little to clarify - based on this talk, it was advised by the Bab not to promote the teachings and the new Cause by sharing stories of miracles - this way every person would have to investigate the new teachings themselves by aid of the revealed Word - which was shared by the Bab's disciples. Abdu'l Baha had said in Some Answered Questions that miracles are relevant to those who witness them in the moment - so if the Bab did perform a miraculous deed, it would have impacted the hearts of the witnesses. Furthermore, while the miraculous event did relieve Sam Khan of his dilemma, more importantly the Bab was able to complete His Mission, which is the expression of God's Will - to the very last letter, which was revealed to His secretary.

I think the Bab performed a miracle during his martydom, simply because he had to finish his conversation he was having when the guards ripped him away. And I bet no soldier firing wanted to kill the Bab, so they all aimed high.

Not using miracles as a needed evidence, does not prevent miracles from happening. Just do not balance evidence upon them.

To common knowledge, the Bab's miracle after the first volley was because He had told His jailers before execution that He had not finished speaking to His secretary. However, He was forced to go to the execution site. Then the miracle happened. The jailers found Him in His cell talking to His secretary and then the Bab said that He was now ready to be executed because His work was done. That is common knowledge and makes perfect sense. Hence, that miracle indicated that when it wasn't time to be executed, no force in earth can hinder God's will. Also, Sam Khan said what he said because he didn't want to feel remorse for killing the Bab Who he believed to be innocent. I hope that why that miracle happened, will not be a our individual theries, but rather based on facts. Balyuzi, famous Bahai author, and others have affirmed this fact.

Yes, I agree, the writing of Scripture is the Will of God, and the forces that accompany this event, while supernatural, are not miraculous, yet I agree that bringing joy to the hearts is the greatest attainment.... It is interesting to note, that history did record the last known Scripture from the Bab, was found in the written in His cell, on the wall, in what appeared to be in charcoal, and while I'm hesitant to mention what I remember, nonetheless an attempt...... be a man...... The exact phrase is something like.... If thou can't be a lizard or a salamander, be a man The exact phrasing I forget, two animals are mentioned and concludes within the statement, a statement, be a man

I agree with what Edward suggested. The Bab was opposed to the idea of miracles through these kinds of acts. His repeatedly said that His miracles are His revealed verses and His Own Self. If He believed in miracles like this, He would have shouted this is my miracles after the failed attempt of the first volley. But He never said anything.

Could Mulla Husayn have gotten a ride (with a caravan?) on some days? That could account for the speed of the journey.

Maybe, but apparently, the accounts all say he was on foot. Go figure, I can't imagine how he did it. And even if he got a ride sometimes, it wasn't as if those carts or carriages went very fast in those days, seems to me.

It is not important how fast or slow he traveled at these distances. The fact is that he traveled by foot to many places. Even when he went to Mah-Ku to meet the Bab for the last time. Badi traveled by foot from Akka to Tehran. These are due to sheer determination and strong faith. Nothing else can explains their dedications and endurances.

And yet, when a personal opinion aligns so closely with what we know of the loving-kindness of the Báb, one has to acknowledge the possibility. It seems to me quite consistent with the Báb's character that He would be glad to relieve Sám Khán of his perplexity, even through a miracle, which is what the accounts tell us happened. BTW, I don't know if you've noticed, but there are two sides to everything in this world. The idea that the Báb didn't want His followers to use miracles to convince others of the Faith doesn't mean that miracles did not happen. It's just that we're not supposed to stress them. It doesn't mean we can't acknowledge them and speculate about the meaning behind them.

I think the Báb and Bahá'u'lláh would have both said something about meeting each other. Of course, they knew _of_ each other, given Mulla Husayn's instructions to go to Tehran to seek out Bahá'u'lláh immediately after he had accepted the Báb. And they both wrote in praise of each other many times, the Báb even naming Bahá'u'lláh as "He whom God would make manifest." The fact that 95% or more of the Bábís accepted Bahá'u'lláh shows how close their connection was. If they had met, we would have had written accounts from both of them of such a portentious meeting, IMHO.

Since he didn't want to kill the Báb, then he surely ordered all his soldiers to either just load their muskets with powder (without bullets), or to shoot the rope above the Báb rather than the Báb, thus also releasing him.
@wendyscott8425
@wendyscott8425 Жыл бұрын
Do you really think the muskets of 750 men would all miss precisely enough to free the Báb and Anís without giving them even a scratch? I find that hard to believe. Plus, we have no report of Sám Khán ever giving such an order to his regiment.

@@mohammadnorozi9413 True, but some soldiers can be very loyal and follow orders not to talk till their dying day. Plus since it was 180 years ago it possible that someone did say something to someone else without it becoming public knowledge. The newspapers weren't at todays level and there was no radio tv or other media. Nevertheless it doesn't change the essence of the miracle, which was he was able to effect the honest heart of the commander to not want to kill him, and more importantly to materialise back in his cell without a key in a short space of time. Also, don't get me wrong i'm not saying that i for sure don't believe there was a musket bullet miracle, i'm just saying sometimes the most reasonable and scientifically plausible explanation MIGHT be the most accurate one, Occams Razor and all (however that's spelled)...
