Finally a person EXPERIENCED with pigeons!!! That last Pigeon related video was an absolute hot mess. I am very glad that parrot tricks was able to tell the woman straight up that they could not help her because they were not experienced with Pigeon hormonal behaviors or training. Pigeon sociology and psychology is completely different than parrots they have different breeding behaviors and different social structures. Maddie is well-versed in all of this and I’m sure she will be able to give a good insight on this very interesting subject

First of all, I adore your icon! Thank you for hyping me up! I definitely need to make a video discussing pigeons and their generally aggressive/sassy behaviors in the future. Truly, I need to make more pigeon content in general, if we’re being honest. With my hand raised male, I feel like I haven’t experienced the traditional standard male pigeon behavior; I have the intense, “I hate you/love you I’ve never been taught to be a pigeon” behavior. I wish I had someone local to me with a non-hand raised male that was accustomed to humans to compare. My only friend with pigeons also has a hand raised male, and he is almost carbon copy behavior wise to my guy. Super interesting honestly!

@@brysenstrowder5178 They're something else! I've had a lot of success redirecting Coo-per onto a stuffed sock for his "hormonal needs" and divert him from my hands. That seems to have helped a lot in that aspect, and he's mellowed out as a result; which I am VERY thankful for.

We rescued a pigeon years ago who had been dumped on the porch of a pet store after his mate died and he didn’t. He was 9 years old when we rescued him and had not been kept in the best condition. We planned on giving him the best life we could for the rest of his life (which we didn’t think would be long). Well 6 years later he is now 15 years old. He despises our other birds and we joke he is our old grumpy man but he is going strong.

As long as you take good care of them, and are calm and kind to your Pidgey, they are easy to care for and will see you as their family.

Pigeons are definitely different then parrots, and in many ways make much better pets and companion animals. It's so exciting that more people are bringing attention to them! (Although the fact that pigeons are aggressive when they're raised by humans, should maybe tip off parrot breeders that handraising might have life-long consequences...)

Well one showed up on my doorstep a week ago, peeping and flapping. He appeared to be an adult but for a few baby feathers on his neck. He let me pick him up. He appeared healthy so I readied a silicone boba straw with some baby bird food. He got the idea, but hated the bird food. On to peas...a big favorite. Washed corn as well. I have to pop them into his crop for him to try a new food. Within a day he was drinking water from a dish, within two he took his first few tentative pecks at seeds, and today he had a bunch of them rather enthusiastically. Popped a few wild berries in his mouth when he asked. I figured he'd like them. Now, he CAN eat if he wants to, but he constantly begs for me to do it for him. He can fly to anyplace in the house that I am to beg to be crop fed. I have been leaving the house for an hour here and there, and he eats the food I leave, at least half of it. It seems if he's not eating, he wants to be HELD. And petted. I know baby chicks/chickens do too, but they get tired of it and are interested in something else after a few minutes. This guy wants constant body contact. It would be great if I could keep him; but they are funny about pets here. My intent was to build a birdhouse back on the treeline and keep filling the birdfeeder there. Now I have to get him to WANT to leave the house.....

What you said at 0:27, yes, I wish I had known. I have a serious lung disease and I had a dove for 18 years, who flew out the door unexpectedly. So someone brought me this pigeon, even though I said no. So Teeka was only 4 weeks old. I cared for him and fell in love with him and let him fly free in my apartment, just as my dove did. Now my lung disease is much, much worse and I wish I had refused to take Teeka, even though now I can't seem to rehome him, because we are so bonded.

Yes my pigeons love my cat tree! It’s perfect with the levels. Also pigeons can rebound and rebond, especially the males I have seen even sneaky link with other hens even while married with baby birds in the nest!!!! I had a lonely hen and he must have heard her singing or something. They are monogamous for the most part, they take a while to get over their spouse when separated but will take to a new mate after only a few weeks of separation. If they get put back with their old spouse again they will often go back to their first mate.

I have had pigeons for many years and I don't agree with everything she said. It really depends on your bird and how you raise them .None of my hand reared babies grew up to be aggressive. Also depends as well how you socialize them with other birds and the rest of the world around them. I just finish raising a baby pigeon who is as sweet as she can be. She has the freedom to go outside on her own or sometimes she just likes to hang out around the house and loves getting in my way while I get the house work done. Loves getting rides on the mop. I just love her :-)

Are your hand raised birds male? Everyone I have talked to that has hand raised male pigeons without a mate say that they are more bitey and tough since they tend to view the human as their mate and become frustrated. I have not had a hand raised female bird with the same bold attitude as my hand raised male, they seem to be more easy going and less bossy.

Are these the same kind of birds you can train to send/recieve hand writtrn messages tied onto their feet ? Although I would guess nowadays there are soem kinf of body suit or vest for the notes being transferred in ?
@MaddieSmith
@MaddieSmith 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Homing pigeons are the ones you would use to send messages. Carrier pigeons were the breed commonly used back in the day. I don't know of many people using them for message delivery nowadays, but before they would have a little vessel attached to their leg or a band that would hold a slip of paper. I'd imagine a body suit or vest would potentially hinder flying ability or make them more visible to predators and so likely that's why the leg band/vessel was used :)

I am kinda weirded out that pigeons aren’t protected by law in the USA and even around the world, they don’t really answer the criteria of Invasive Species and the can actually reduce bug problems and trash since they’re top notch foragers. It is funny because in some places street cats (absolutely invasive yet very helpful for us humans) are protected, but not pigeons? Huh. Are cats protected in the USA? Here in Israel they’re pigeons are supposably protected yet I am not sure people really care that they are.

My pigeons are rescues that are unreleasable, or abandoned babies that were hand raised and bonded with people (like the bird I'm holding). They all do fly (as much as they can, as some of them are injured and not well flighted) all over the house and in predator proof aviaries. We are firm believers that pigeon racing/releasing is exploitative and cruel due to the disregard for the health and safety of the birds. In fact, two of our birds were racing rejects that were not wanted because they didn't return home to the loft or were injured. Pigeons are wonderful pets, and should not be looked at as disposable racing machines. Although I am young, I have worked with pigeons for over a decade in rescue/rehab settings and plenty of those I work around have been rehabbing and housing pigeons for many decades. I encourage you to check out Palomacy and Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue. They do wonderful work rehabbing and rehoming unreleasable and discarded birds that were victims of the racing industry.
