The "Slug" nomenclature likely came from the same term used for a counterfeit coin, in the sense that a slug is a "false" egg like its namesake is a false coin. The other possibility is from metalworking, where a slug is a blank piece of metal that has not yet been machined or pressed into a finished part, so an "unfinished" egg.

Certainly could have been worse! I just last month had the displeasure of emptying out a nest of half incubated chicks that failed to hatch! Momma tried so hard but it just wasn’t meant to be. The eggs had built up so much pressure that any jostling would cause them to pop like a balloon! Not a fun afternoon would be a understatement! Thank god the nest box is not in the coop currently! But rather out in the run. Because the stank was gag worthy!
