In the 1970's, alligators were kept as pets surprisingly often. This gem of a book from 1973 explains how to "care for" alligators... And the advice is so terrible it's almost funny. We HAD to read through it with you to not only laugh over the inaccuracy of the advice, but also to show just how far we've come in terms of caring for reptiles in captivity! And, of course, Rex (our alligator) helps us out!

Emily, you need to write a kids book: Don’t Keep An Alligator as a Pet (starring a cartoon Rex)

I like how literally no-one noticed the animal sexism in the whole of the book! They always say HE and never SHE... how does Emily not say anything about this?????????

The fact that the book had nothing about caring for an adult should tell you something. Probably that they don’t expect the baby to survive or people to keep it.

Emily just casually reading a book while having a freaking alligator lay across her lap like its storytime before bed.

I hope this video helps explain why Rex's old owner took care of her the way he did. I'm old enough to have killed a few of my reptiles following the "expert advice" we had back in the day. Books like this one were everywhere and pet shops would recommend them. There was no one else to ask. No meet ups. Libraries had the same exact information. So you got a pet and did everything the book said to care for them, and they still got sick and died. Even the vets had no idea what to do, no one was trained or knew how to care for these animals. It still pains me that a few of my pets died horribly by my hands, and it hurts knowing so many more must have suffered and died throughout the years from this nonsense. But at least we did learn eventually. At least we gain more empathy for animals as the years have gone on.

When I was about 4 years old (early 70s), a woman in our apartment complex kept a baby alligator in a large fishbowl on her coffee table.

One of my earliest memories is going to the exotic petshop with my parents to buy toys for our parrots (a real treat to me due to the colourful store and the many animals inside) and getting distracted by the aquariums at the adjoining room. I walked inside a very dark room and there was a not-so-small baby cayman in a fish tank. It had no rocks or anything, just a few inches of slimy water, enough to leave its eyes and nostrils out in the air. The tank had the same length with the cayman, leaving the poor thing literally immobile in its glassy prison. It gave me

The book: you can just put them in a tank with water and a rock and jar with a heater.
