My shopping habits online were drastic after I lost my husband, I bought anything and everything🤣🤣it was either eat and gain weight which I didn't want to do, so chose online shopping. It was ridiculous! I don't buy anything these days unless I need it. I took 17 cruises after I lost my hubbie, I love cruising, haven't taken one since pandemic, shopping and cruising was my way of escaping and to cope with the depression, it got me threw the most difficult time of my life! Luckily financially I was able to do the shopping and cruising back then, today I don't spend money like it's water and only buy what I need!

I did the same thing when I lost my son. I decided I needed to surround myself with pretty things. I also bought into a timeshare so I would have someplace to go and distract myself over holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas are horribly lonely since losing my only child. He was 21 and I was a single mom his whole life. He was my whole family.

My Mum always used to say "it's not a deal if you won't wear it." I always think about that when I get those frantic sale emails from retailers - so it's a good deal, who cares if it won't fit, doesn't fill a need in my wardrobe or is an unflattering colour/style for me. I've made a list of what I feel I need in my wardrobe and have been sticking to the list instead of grabbing random, impulse stuff at the mall/online. That's helped me a ton.

Hi! I’m 67 and unrecognizable to my former ballet dancer self. However, I never wore makeup when I danced, but now, even though I will never return to that lovely slim dancer, I CAN have fun experimenting with a few cosmetics, and I do look better. My eyes seem to be sinking into my head.. a little make up and VOILÀ they’re BACK! my mouth seems larger with lipstick… things like that, and it’s part of my long awaited “self care”… so, I guess we all have those things that we indulge in.

Yes, I'm over 50 and I recently lost weight that I struggled with for 15 yrs. For the last 2 yrs I've had Lyme's disease, so I had to focus on eating healthy. Now that I'm better and lost weight, I am having fun too with make up and clothes. But its also because I need more coverage with regards to how my skin became an issue with this condition. I look young for my age, and date younger men, so for me I haven't changed much with regards to my clothing tastes per se. I'm always classy, so its not a big issue for me. Thought I am into quality now more, but because of the way my skin became as a result of Lyme's, I'm always looking for comfortable materials for clothing; lightweight, etc. It doesn't have to be expensive if it works for me. So though many are saying they are not buying online, I'm actually buying more online than ever before. I find this to be better for my specific selections, and finding sales. I still do buy at brick and mortar stores too, especially since I do like to see in front of me what I am investing in.

I’m 56 and just now starting to get a few grey hairs. And I’m embracing it. I think I style my hair youthful but I don’t dye it and I also don’t blow dry my hair. That makes it more brittle. Also, drink lots of water, cut out sugar, get some exercise and your hair will be more youthful as you age. Both my parents were completely grey by age 50. I’m like 2% grey 👍🏻💪🏻

At 50, I stopped worrying about what other people think of me. Unless it affects my income, it's none of my business. That was very, very freeing. I also unsubscribed from all the websites, magazines, newsletters. I kept 2 that I really enjoy and will read. Close to retirement, I donated all my business clothes that we're in good condition. Only my nice leather blazer got to stay for spring and fall. Anything unworn, polyester, shabby, trendy & outdated was trashed or recycled. At 60, out went all my make up: wrong colors, outdated, too stagey. My skin tone and hair color has changed so my make up is now much simpler. Mascara, lip gloss and go. Also all those things I may fit into one day went goodbye. My goal is now strength and health not my weight at 17. Now, I'm coming on 70, I only replace worn clothing, I aim for quality, new or rehomed. I don't buy anything clothing that doesn't fit comfy and is at least one of 'my colors'.

I’m 56…. I basically only wear a little foundation to even out my skin, a little blush and mascara. I used to wear lots of eye shadow and heavy dark lipstick. Only a light pale pink do I wear. Darker color makeup only enhances our fine lines and wrinkles. Yep, less is more. And more youthful looking as we get older. 👍🏻 Anyway, I’m focusing on fitness. I still like to wear shorts and tank tops in the summer and I won’t let anyone tell me I’m too old to do that. I’m relatively fit for my age and getting stronger and firmer all the time. And I do it for ME, I don’t care what anyone else says. But I do want to look respectable in public with what I wear. Don’t want to scare anyone. Lol

Had a big life change at 38 that was a big wake up call divorce while battling breast cancer and I promised myself that if I survive I will become more intentional and live smart and still enjoy myself to the fullest. I'm 58 and sewed my own clothes growing up. I really cut back when patterns got so expensive years ago. I'm back to wanting to sew more of my own clothes. I find most clothes in recent years are of crappy quality fabrics and poorly constructed. I'm also a plus size. I like quality and am happier to have fewer quality, well fitting items. Things I look for in ready made or patterns are, proper set in collars, yokes, darts, set in sleeves. It's the details like these which help clothes fit better are more flattering. The pattern companies have also cheapened up by not having these details in a lot of their patterns, yes they are easier to sew for novices but I don't care for them. I'm also a fan of thrift stores and resale shops. I like finding unique and one of a kind items as I don't care to look everyone else. When shopping online I often will wait a day or two before I order to avoid any impulse purchases. Also I ask myself do I really need the item?

I 100% agree with you when it comes to not buying full price. Everything goes on sale. We live in such a consumer driven society. That businesses are going to be rotating items off the shelf and the rack constantly. I mean there is over a dozen seasons in fashion now. And I grew up with just the basic four. So patience is truly a virtue. I shop at three places, lane bryant, Ashley Stewart in cato's. And over 90% of all of my clothing and shoes and accessories I have purchased on clearance. Once you get out of the fear of missing out mindset. You'd be surprised at how much more you can get for your money.

Absolutely the fast fashion costs more in the long run. I'm not nor have I ever been a trendy person and I learned long ago that well made quality tailored clothes may cost more initially, but they will last for a long time, even through all the fads. There is a French woman with a KZfaq channel that says there's Fashion, and there's Style. Fashion is fleeting, but Style is forever.

Such a brilliant video, packed full of practical and very useful advice. I'm almost 63 yrs and stopped buying "high end" beauty products, beauty subscription boxes, exorbitant "well being" items, magazines, uncomfortable expensive underwear & fragrance long ago. I'm never influenced by TikTok, Facebook, Instagram etc as I've never subscribed! I've used Charity/Thrift stores and street markets all my life. I, very rarely pay full price for anything. Sure, I still wear make-up, enjoy fragrance, toiletries and well being products- but all at the normal end of the price scale. I gave up lipstick during the pandemic as it wasn't practical whist wearing a mask. I've always worn clothes that make ME feel good and comfortable . I've saved so much money in the process and used the time I've saved by enjoying my hobbies instead of endlessly scrolling and shopping for the next "must have" item that, in fact, you don't actually need! Thank you for the post- count me in as a new sub!

When I lost weight, I found consignment stores that I liked and also thrift stores. I bought from there and saved a bunch of money. I wear my second hand rose outfits more than the new clothing I buy. I bought a glut of new things in the span on about two or three years. Now I have boxes of clothing in my garage I have not unpacked since my major move plus a room full of newer items that there is no way that I can wear them all. My life changed when I retired. If I travel, I take all those pretty things so I can wear them. I've pretty much stopped buying clothes. I know I won't stop buying but I need a one in, one out system. What I have bought, I really love and the clothing does bring me joy. Plus, I have worked for peanuts all my young life so when I bought something, I really loved it and treasured it. Doesn't mean I can't get rid of some of it. It is just the letting go. I have had to get rid of my dead parent's things. That is hard. I could not touch anything for four years after I moved to my childhood home. As you can agree, it's a process and an emotional roller coaster.

Yes, one in one out. I still have teen kids at home. Since I had kids, I would do a big Purge of toys, books, and clothing, not just for the kids, but for me also...right before Christmas. I knew that the deluge of gifts was comming and I needed to not get stressed and overwhelmed by "stuff" coming into the house. It kept me sane and I still believe in a "one in one out" system.

Last year it seemed like my magazines were piling up so i cancelled the subs. But I found after a year (and the Holiday season's arrival) i really missed them and that they are $15 each issue at store check out. So Cyber Monday saw me choosing just two mags for sub. For my taste and for value, i chose "Good housekeeping' and 'real simple'. $5 each for the whole year, and two shouldn't be too many.

Love your channel. I'm not just over 50 I'm over 60. As we get older "more" things don't give us much pleasure. And that's good because we can focus on the things that actually do. I recently got rid of some catalogs. The only thing is that it takes 2 or, 3 months to actually be off their lists because they are working a couple of months out.

Some of this stuff is so relatable....I have cookbooks and gadgets I never use too. I even have 4 new books I have never used at all, let alone just not recently. I hate cooking and totally agree.....spend ages cooking stuf and it's gone in no time and taken for granted. I had to get rid of literally all my clothes afer weight loss and I didn't buy anywhere near as many as I'd got rid of. I also didn't pay full price for any of the replacements.

I ended my makeup subscriptions. I stopped wearing skirts to work so no more pantyhose ( incidentally that was the end of the yeast infections too). I don’t get magazines. I love cooking and I can and dehydrate my own food so honestly I have many cooking and canning books and loads of appliances. I am going to have a yard sale and sell some of them as well as my daughter’s old toys in the spring. I will probably sell many of our old clothes too. I’ve stopped going for regular manicures and pedicures.

Interesting question. There are so many things I know longer buy. Clothes isn't such a big thing as I rarely find any that are to my liking. Love quality fabric when it can be found; and i will occasionally make something new if I can find it. Quality footwear is important but I rarely buy new ones. Purses never. Makeup I don't need so that's a no. Love cook books, but I have to be careful not to over indulge. Mostly I've begun decluttering my entire home. Keeping what is essential and practical and getting rid of the rest. In particular any thing electrical.

I have always been a big shopper, but still trying to reign it in. I have gotten better, but since losing both of my parents who I love and miss more than anything, it is so hard. I buy books I don't read. crafting stuff I don't use, I have reigned in the clothes and makeup though, for the most part. Getting better, but not as quickly and as much as I would like. I always tell myself I don't need anymore seasonal decorations - but every new season I just find something so cute and a new style I haven't seen before - I just have to have a little!! I've really been into seasonal candles as well - which really set the atmosphere - I love them so much - those are my indulgences! I do agree with the make up - I have stuff years old that is barely touched! Also no more fancy dishware - we aren't entertaining royalty here : ) I stick with basics that will be used everyday.

Great tips Cathy! I do some of them, and I am pleased to have more. One tip I use came from Christina Mychas for when I shop online. I save the item I want to buy on a wish list or such and wait at least 24 hours before purchasing. I use that time to think about where it fits in my wardrobe, do I have other other pieces that will go with it? Will I actually look good in it. Will it be comfortable, and do I have something already that works in place of the item. Sometimes just sleeping on it and I wake in the morning to find I no longer want it. If I wait a few days and the item meets my parameters, then I am more pleased with the item when I get it than if I had not gone through these steps.

Hi Kathy, great video, great tips and a perfect timing! I used to shop for things I even didn't need. And stopped doing it a long time ago. As you said, that was just a huge waste of money. Now I purchase only what I truly need. I also took the advantage of the holiday sales. Sadly not all of the brands offered great deals. Some of the companies just want to get rid of their inventory before the new year starts. And trying to sale some staff which are not even worth the selling price. There are some companies with an amazing deals though, which I found worth waiting until the end of the year to make a purchase. Great video! Greetings from California ❤

Am a day late watching. And so many comments! You touched a lot of good points. I have just gotten to the no eyeshadow point, so I feel that one especially. I look at a palette on line and check what I have and just don’t feel the need for a new one. I looked at the new IT holiday “book” and although it was lovely, just couldn’t justify getting it when I don’t need it. I found an Elizabeth Arden duo in my stash, and wore it yesterday. It was such good quality and long wearing and just the colors that I think look well on me. Win-win

Hey there, thanks for the video! Something you might enjoy in the way of cooking and keeping track of recipes is a Plan To Eat subscription, which includes a great app for your phone. I got rid of all my cookbooks and it’s fabulous! It’s basically a very easy way to keep your recipes digitally (with minimal manual entry) and it’s super easy to keep track of and plan your meals. I’ve been using it for about five years now and I would pay double if they raised the price….which I pray to God they don’t lol. Hugs from Ohio!
