It's no surprise that many of us 2004-08 F150 owners would crave more power. It's not hard to believe that, when the mighty 5.4 3V was 300HP crank from the factory back in this generation. For the time it was ok, but now with nearly 400HP+ trucks ruling the road, it leaves many of us feeling like we are driving a slow turd.
While I do plan on increasing the performance of my 5.4 3V in the coming years, I have battled with pursuing a coyote swap or just doing a turbo or supercharger. All of these options cost money, by my interest in fabrication has had me toying with a remote mount turbo and later forging my engine. I also would like to 6r80 swap my truck and the US Shift Quick 6 Controller is proving to be a valid option for running this transmission behind your existing engine. That is likely the route I will go.
For others, the coyote swap with a 6r80 is incredibly appealing - and rightfully so. They get pretty solid fuel mileage and make impressive power stock. Let alone their ability to take boost and make 700HP+.
I wanted to make this video as I see the "engine swap" question asked on a lot of forums and FB groups. The coyote is a phenomenal motor, but swapping the 2004-08 11th gen F-150 is not exactly a simple task. Let's not forget that it IS a major engine swap. And while the engine physical bolts in, you need a way to run the engine (factory coyote PCM or control pack or stand alone system such as one by Holley), a custom crossmember for the 6r80, a fuel system, trans lines, all sorts of connections for accessories such as AC and much more. These swaps will nickel and dime you and are not something you slap together in a weekend. This isn't the age of swapping a Chevy 350 or small block Ford!
I have not completed this swap, but I have learned a lot over many years of following other builds, and many inquiring 11th gen owners fail to realize how involved these swaps really are on a newer truck like these F150's.
If you are pursuing a swap, my hat is off to you, and I look forward to following along with your build!

These were things, I did not know personally when I decided to purchase the gen2 5.0 coyote crate engine and 6R80. I'm now in full swing and realize this is difficult, I'm not a fabricator or professional mechanic. Just a cabinet installer. I'm not stopping this project because it's hard, I'm going to keep at it, it just means there won't be many like it around and I do like to be unique. The transmission (so far) was the most difficult to figure out, I've finally got an aftermarket crossmember welded on, but still need to figure out the driveshaft. This truck was bought new by my mom and own by her for years, sold it to me and it's taken on another life, no plans to ever sell it. Old engine 4.6 2v had over 308,000 miles and still ran great. With long tube headers and other performance upgrades like a 2.3 Roush supercharger, I'm aiming for 700hp to the wheels. But as you said, it'll take months and so far it's been two

Yes I've followed you build in the FB groups. It's a big undertaking and glad you are seeing it through. I see a lot of hopeful people comment on your posts and I don't think they realize the involvement. When I first made this video, there were some dopey comments about me being weak minded etc. I'm not, it's to hopefully guide others to realize exactly what you experienced. It's absolutely doable, but it's not a Lego set and you have to engineer parts yourself. I follow along, so excited to see your progress. My future plan is a 6r80 with the quick 6 controller and boost. Had my truck since I was 17, so I know the feeling haha.

I inherited a 5.4 3v with 270k miles on it. it’s got the cam phaser problem, timing chain slap, and idles very rough sometimes at very low speeds after tapping the gas pedal. Original spark plugs! Still runs tho. My dad found out that pouring a gallon of diesel into the motor before doing an oil change and driving around for a few minutes and then immediately change the oil solved the idle problem for a little while and made the cam phaser sound not as bad

Patrick, I have a 09 with 5.4 3v, bought with 150K and know have 275k. Still running well with the phaser issues, but I learned how to manage. Just increase rpm. Planning to change the VCV solenoids myself $200 for parts from Ford. I changed the Cam phaser sensors and that did not help. Spoke to Ford parts dealer and he is not yet convinced the 5.0 Coyote is better off. The 4.6 eco also has issues. I do Transmission purge every 50k and complete cooling revamp every 50k. Change oil every 6-7k with 10w30. Fram US filter. Keep reminding myself the a few thou$ is better than $20k on another unknown used vehicle.

My 08 5.4 is just fine at 110k miles, but was considering coyote if the cam phaser timing situation ever arises. Due to life being short that would be a timely undertaking and costly, I’ll just stick to 5.4, give it what it needs, it has lots of power and I’ve pulled trailers through the mountains here in British Columbia.Thanks for the lowdown prediction of migraines to do the swap. Our 19 has the Coyote and that is super sweet!

For sure! The coyote is an awesome engine and I will be in the market to pick up a newer SuperCrew with the coyote as my daily driver once the market settles down. There's nothing wrong with swapping them but I think a lot of people underestimate what's involved. I would love to put a Godzilla in my truck long term and it may happen, but I know that it could take me a couple of years of working on it to make it happen. 110k on a 2008? That’s awesome are you the original owner? I’ve had an 07 for 12 years, just got the cam phaser codes at 215k over a year ago. Every mechanic shop said it’s days are numbered and that the engine is good as done with out looking at it. I plugged in the loose coil from the first hack job the mechanic shop did and decided I will only work on my truck from now on. So I did a front end rebuild, a tune up, fixed some vacuum leaks and my truck runs better than ever, the only problem is that orange light lol. My advice to you is, frequent oil changes, don’t go over 3000 ever, use high quality oil, oem oil filter always, change the fuel filter every 50k and run premium gas! Some people (smarter than I in this area) strongly suggest you do a complete timing job with a Melling high volume pump. Personally, I would leave the engine alone and just stay on your maintenance if it is running fine, there are a LOT of 5.4s still on the road. I still have a rainy day fund left for a new 5.4 but I can’t justify spending it if my truck running so well

I am seriously thinking of doing this to my 2004 Ford F150 4x4 Lariat with the Super Crew. I can't believe I've not been able to find a complete Kit from Ford to make this swap easier. As for your idea about using the Flareside I have to ask why? I had a red 95 F 150. It was a 4x4 Super cab Centurion Custom build. It came with the 5.8 liter and was painted that same red. By far my favorite pick up. The 5.8 had decent power after a bunch of performance upgrades under the hood.
@3VJohnny
@3VJohnny 2 жыл бұрын
No kits and in my opinion the current economic climate is not a good time for engine swaps since people will probably be starting projects and run into issues even sourcing components. Lots of lead times with control packs and Ford has even been pushing back etas on the new Godzilla control pack. Still nothing on that. The flareside from 92 to 96 is one of Ford's best designs ever in my opinion.

The only other swap that I've seen done less than a couple times is a 5.4 2 valve swap. Because you have a two valve, there are some ways guys have figured out how to put a old two valve in. But otherwise nothing is an easy swap. The four-speed trans is a major reason these vehicles are so slow and feel down on power. Any swap worth doing in my opinion needs to get rid of the antiquated four speed and at least have a six-speed. You see less complaints on the 2009+ 4.6 3 valve and 5.4 3 valve vehicles because the 6R80 is able to keep the engine in the power band without this giant spread between gears.

@3VJohnny
@3VJohnny 2 жыл бұрын
They are not. The 4.6 is a 2V engine where the 5.4 is a 3v engine. This generation of truck you really couldn't do much other than superchargers and even then pretty much all of the major manufacturers have dropped it. At this point your best options are either a custom fabricated turbo setup or maybe a Procharger supercharger if they're available for the 4.6. There are threads on the forums from quite a few years ago of a small handful of guys swapping the 4.6 2v engine for the older 5.4 2v engine but it did take some custom work and nothing is really drop in and go. The supercharged 5.4 2v out of the lightning is getting very hard to find parts for anymore. There are some guys with 97-2003 f-150s that have had a hard time piecing together swaps for even that body style where it originally came out of. To be brutally honest there's just not a lot of options anymore for these trucks unless you're willing to scour parts or go the fully custom route which most people obviously aren't willing to do and is super expensive.

I do agree. However it has become a lot easier to do these days. Trans bolts up engine sits in the right spot no fab needed. And there are ppl that make the harness work with certain models. Especially anything with a 3v
@3VJohnny
@3VJohnny 2 жыл бұрын
The three valve coyote swap is definitely simpler relatively speaking on the mustang. But on the truck you still need to fabricate a crossmember for the transmission. And nobody makes a harness for the trucks that I have ever seen. You'd have to use a control pack and figure out integration. With all of the supply chain issues, power by the hour still doesn't even have their three valve harness from what I've seen for the mustangs. I follow a bunch of the coyote swap groups on Facebook and it's fun to see some of the vehicles that people swap them in. Therey quite a few non-Ford vehicles that end up with coyotes and it's pretty neat.

@Ariev
@Ariev 2 жыл бұрын
If you had to guess, how much would you expect it to cost for a full engine swap to a coyote? Currently I'm fine putting 20 grand if that's what it takes, as I really like my truck, and I don't feel like spending 50-60k on a brand new truck either, it's just not feasible. 20 grand for the engine or around that is also fine for me as I would rather have the 2008 than the next generation and 2015+ is around 40k or more used at the moment so that's kind of out of it too. The only other option I'm thinking is getting a brand new truck, in a year or 2 with a 10-20k downpayment. I also wouldn't be selling this truck, and if I did it would be in 10+ years and the resale would be bad anyway. I'm also fine doing the fabbing, welding, all the work and what not. I also don't need to upgrade the motor immediately, I just eventually want to have the power to tow more because I have a 4.6 and it can tow maybe 6500 pounds.
@3VJohnny
@3VJohnny 2 жыл бұрын
You're probably $20-30,000 to do it properly there's so many variables and so many parts that you can't really throw a cost at it. And while some incredibly skilled people can get through and do it on a tighter budget, the average person is going to struggle and just have a project that's downed. With the supply chain and shortages on parts, inflation way above what the government is saying, it's not really a good time to be doing engine swaps in my opinion. They can't even get control packs out to people right now. When you start looking into the lead times on some of the major components, good luck sourcing them in a timely manner.

I think it depends on which cab. For instance, my 04 extended cab has a longer door then a supercrew. My understanding is when they increased the size of the cab, those cabs now received the original length doors on the super cabs. 04-08 supercrews had goofy small front doors. Not saying it will bolt up, but I think the cab type is incredibly important to keep in mind to your point. I have an 04 and I know that the cams are different for the '04s and there are some other subtle differences that Ford did throughout the years. There's so much conflicting information that it's hard to know what actually bolts up without modification. And then there's the question of the PCM being set up for that particular engine. I just don't know

I know this video is old but I’m thinking of doing a coyote TH400 swap into an 05. From what I’m gathering, I would just need to get the tranny mounted. The control pack will run the engine and I don’t need the a/c heat. I may have to figure out the brakes or go with a manual setup. I would just need to get the lights to operate. It would be a hotrod work truck for around town.

I'm not going to say it's not possible but you would be one of the very few in existence that ever successfully did it. I have never found a documented case of someone actually successfully doing it in an 11th gen F-150. I would love it myself but it's tricky because of the weight of these trucks it makes your transmission options that actually fit and bolt up, limited. What you can get for inspiration is look up the second gen lightnings that have swapped to the t-56 manuals. But it's not a bolt in swap there's a lot of engineering you're going to have to do with speed sensor, pilot bearing, utilizing the master cylinder, clutch pedals, etc out of 4.2 11th gen 5 speed manual truck. And you can't forget about figuring out how to have the the PCM programmed to be able to know that it's okay to operate not having an auto. You absolutely would need to talk to a tuner before you even made that decision to start the swap. Bit of a rabbit hole and you'd be doing something that I have never seen completed. As they say anything is possible but if there's one thing that I've learned as I've gotten older, it's that some of these things are better off kept to the older vehicles where there's less electronics involved in a much more parts availability. That's why I would rather swap in a newer motor with a Ford control pack in an older vehicle and then have it set up with a manual like a t-56 or a tr-6060.

@3VJohnny
@3VJohnny 2 жыл бұрын
If you need to replace the engine and the truck is in good shape that is one of the brands I've seen highly regarded. No personal experience with them myself. Some people that are able to do the engine R&R themselves decide to just put a new engine in like a Fraser gold or a powertrain products because then they have a new engine in the vehicle. It's just if you have to pay a shop to do that you're ending up with a $7-$8,000 bill because it's usually a few thousand in labor on top of the cost of the engine. Lately a lot of shops seem to be steering people towards new engines because they don't want to replace the timing components and then have the customer complain that the engine isn't operating correctly. A lot of shops charge $3-5,000 or more to do the timing. All about what your comfortable with and budget. Ultimately that's why a lot of guys end up just doing the timing system and the oil pump because it's much cheaper if you can DIY. ($1,200-1500 in parts)

My understanding is no, it is not any easier and in some ways it can actually be more complicated. The company Power by the Hour had talked about years ago the 2010 Ford mustang GT's being a bastard child because they had the 4.6 3 valve but then the newer modules and upgrades that the 2011 and up cars had. And they said how difficult it would be to swap one of those mustangs because it had the newer brains but the older engine, which makes it so much more complicated. You'd likely be faced with the exact same sort of issue because those 09-10 trucks were updated and then you have the older three valve engine inside of it. These days they're truly is no engine swap that is easy or simplistic because there's so money modules and nuances between different vehicles now.

There is definitely a lot of interest. The problem is the pocketbooks of owners typically aren't supportive of 15 to 25,000 or more to support this. Best example is the superchargers. Everyone in their grandma says how bad they want a supercharger. Jason Etter with department of boost designs a manifold finally for the 5.4 3 valve trucks. He struggled to get people to pony up and finally said this is why it is so hard to bring products to market because everyone says they want it, but very few are willing to even provide just a deposit.

I built a new engine with forged internals and have a procharger set-up for it as well. I can attest to the time and money that goes into this. Over five years to do it without going into the poor house. I have two really nice low mileage; rust free 4x4 super crews to pick from for the build. One is an Amethyst '07 Harley(that I bought for the price of the Procharger kit that is in it becauseit has a turned rod bearing ;) and the other is a Smokestone '06 Lariat.
