In this video, I’ll show you a possible alternative to a metal lathe. I show turning metal on a drill press, an interesting way of thinking outside the box! I challenge my viewers to keep an eye out for making the most out of the tooling they already have.

Word of warning. Never file against metal on a rotational tool without a file handle. When your pulling the tang of the file out of your wrist because physics happened you'll understand why I said that. The handles are cheap and about 5 bucks for them and can mean the difference between a good day and a bad day.

I have more than one drill press but my harbour freight drill press is my go to for most work, believe it or not, it has served me well for over 30 years 👍

NO WAY I would ever wear a glove operating ANY machine tool. 45 years experience and I still have all ten fingers! Same goes for jewelry, watches, even necklace. Only takes once...

Good point, I worked with someone that hot the finger of his 'safety' gloves caugnt while using a large drill which reslted in pulling the skin off his index finger, very nasty

the method of connection between the chuck to the spindle isnt deigned to take that force ... how ever i would still try your suggestion. easy way to get toolsteel old burnt up drillbits are still tool steel and the back end of them is easy enough to grind to shape

well check old 1930..1950s popular mechanics and popular science there were items you could add on and machine using a drill press..even thread .just sold an old geometric die head made to be used on drill press..todays generatiom.would survive if it isnt a push button and control..i have to take care of a kid know how to program but zilch manual machineing or using hands

I've done this before with fiberglass tubes, I had to make a mandrel to mount the tube on, and a dead center that bolts to the table. Now I have a piece of 1/2" bar stock I want to get to a nice tight tolerance to make a semi-precision tool holder.... I was envisioning this method, but with the file in the vise, that way you can file off the high spots of the stock and make the work actually round instead of just skinnier and more shiny.

you really need to be careful side loading a drill press because the chuck is only press fit onto a taper and that is all that is holding it on, unless you know that the chuck is retained on a drawbar (in which case it's more than likely a mill) or the chuck has some kind of retention (not likely but they do exist) I would only ever use this if it was absolutely necessary because trust me a chuck flying off at you while it's spinning is not a fun time.

Oh my goodness Roy please be carefull..I'm not criticising you because I've done this kind of risky stuff all my life to improvise ( And still do ).. But please use Longer tools and take of your gloves and roll shirt sleeves. Yeah you made me nervouse. I've been caught up in machines before and it happens in the blink of an eye. I'm very lucky to still have all my fingers but if you lose yours how will you do your work, pay your bills and feed your family? Just concerned Ok

Very risky business that Roy. How ever, if you are going to do this guys, slide your file in and out so to speak, otherwise you are just wearing out a couple of teeth on one small area of your file rather a lot of teeth over a large area of your file

why are you wearing gloves at drill? you should never have gloves, long floppy sleeves or any kind of that at rotary tools with such power! lathe, mill, drill press!!! they can catch you and really badly injure you! better to be cut with piece of steel, than be catched with machine!
