So the issue I have with this concept is that it allows the defender to foul away when facing a bigger offensive player with total impunity. Holiday should have fouled out but the refs are trying to let them play by giving a huge advantage in physicality to the smaller player. Even the "offensive foul" Jrue openly hand checks with total impunity when Towns gets the step & uses that to recover with his speed advantage. These small advantages nullified by referee bias of size is what will doom the league if they dont address it. Youll end up with 5'10 hacks on defense guarding 6'3 centers on offense. You see it with Jokic, Embiid & even Wemby this early. The NBA is taxing the size advantage & it is screwing teams built around a big man. Jokic avoids this by using his off arm as a weapon to initiate contact & clear out when someone smaller is on him. IDK why that isnt called as much considering how much he hooks by his defender. Embiid commands a double no matter what so it doesnt work as well. Someone like Wemby? They stand no chance if a 6'5 F can hand check his advantage of length. Excessive physicality benefitting the other team, especially without a skill aspect to it, muddies up the game.
@poly_g6068
@poly_g6068 7 ай бұрын
I've noticed this too. The refs basically turn a blind eye to hanchecking if the defender is smaller than the ball handler. This has been the case for YEARS yet people think the game is just immune to defense against big players.

The Bucks gained one of the best offensive players ever - sure. But they got rid of a very good offensive player and a defensive beast. The Bucks had to make that trade. Jrue wasn't a good offensive player during his Bucks tenure. During the regular season he was great, but as soon as the playoffs began, his offense fell off a cliff. Just look at the numbers. They were really bad. We also have to wait and see with the Bucks. They played an offensive and defensive scheme for half a decade and now have to adapt to a new system. Whereas Boston situation is basically plug and play because there offensive core remained largely the same. Jrue basically took Smart's role while Porzingis has a similar role that Horford had.

What happened in the Playoffs is Porter jumped Holiday (middleton started having injury problems) so JD had some bad stretches on offense, but he is a real good offensive player, and i do feel like he was having a hard time adjusting. but Porter came out of nowhere to become a strong contributor because when I saw him the first time I was like "WHO IS THIS BROTHER". I think that is the big difference with his role for the Celtics this year. Jrue at times with the Bucks had to play 2nd option along with being the defensive anchor when injuries leave out Middleton. Bucks don't have anyone great to really step up from the depth charts. If the Celtics stay healthy, Jrue can spend more of his energy being a swiss-army stopper along with doing little things while the Jays attack the basket on offense and KP is the perimeter catch and shoot threat.

The Timberwolves game, you have to keep in mind that Gobert is limited at the offensive end, so he is in the post; that means for spacing KAT is on the perimeter. So Jrue guarding KAT on the perimeter makes sense.
@t4d0W
@t4d0W 7 ай бұрын
If it was a shooting big I think KP would still play help/run him at the perimeter either way. The key thing is that many of the face up bigs just can't punish a strong smaller defender like Smart/Holiday catching the ball from the perimeter. And KP is always hanging at dunker spot which is a good preferred position for him. Even with Embiid and his lackluster ability to split double teams coming to him, who else is he going to pass out to punish the Celtics for putting Jrue on him like that?

One of the other breakdown channels I follow is Jason Timpf (really smart dude) and he brought up an interesting point with Jrue guarding 5’s like KAT and Embiid. Both centers are very great offensive forces, but the weakness that has plagued them is making passes out of doubles. The theory behind Jrue guarding them is that he’ll be able to cause a lot of problems on these guys by fronting the post and using his low center of gravity to make things difficult until they get the catch or put the ball on the floor; then the help comes. i imagine when the Celtics play against Denver, Sac, and Miami that they wont have Jrue on their bigs because those 5s are much better at making quick decisions with the ball. Also, KAT was having a ROUGH start in this initial stretch, so putting Jrue Holiday on him was ruthless and resulted in probably his worst played game of the season lol

If the NBA YT channel can clean up their frickin playlist of game highlights so its not a mess to catch up, that would be a start among other poor things the NBA has for media. In comparison to what the NFL YT channel has done with organizing videos and what not, its no reason why they are light years ahead of the NBA in organizing and showcasing media. NFL being more popular is because they are more efficient with what they do for the schedule/competition in 5 months (and another 3-4 months of offseason coverage via draft, FA) than the NBA does with 6-7 months where nobody cares about games until after Christmas.

@@simonribeiro7630 i disagree. guys like shaq would be more effective scoring in the post today than when they played. mainly bc there are less centers that are strong enough to bang w him. shaq made great passes out of doubles too but that has no bearing on whether or not he can post a mismatch 1v1 w/o getting called for an offensive foul. sure guys have become smarter/more crafty drawing fouls, but the game has evolved in a way that makes it easier for smaller defenders. shaq used to catch the ball w great inside position where he could just drop step and go up with tha ball - n if the defender was in the restricted area they couldn't draw charges. its totally diff today. look at the film they showed of modern bigs... it was siakam driving a close out and kat taking ppl off the dribble lol. ofc its easier for little guys to draw charges when bigs are trying to space n put the ball on the floor. even jokic (prob the best modern post up player) doesnt post in the paint often. he's running offense at the high post or they'll clear a side so he can iso 15-20ft from the basket. it works for him bc he can turn over his shoulder and hit shots from out there consistently and he has a decent handle. im a cs fan and ive loved jrue for yrs but theres no way in hell jrue holiday could guard shaq in the post😂 idc what era it is!

I noticed this from the Celtics when they had Marcus smart and grant will checking Giannis in the playoffs. they literally would wait until Giannis posted up and they'd flop every time effectively taking Giannis out of the post and since its harder for taller to dribble against shorter players it always works

Smart isn't really a guard though. Yes, Jrue is better -- slightly -- at all the traditional guard defense things like on ball defense, screen navigation and chasing. In a one-on-one matchup he is the best defensive guard. But the game is five-on-five Marcus is significantly better off ball and as a traffic cop and it's just more mathematically valuable to prevent layups than to decrease jumpshot efficiency. (Which Marcus also does; go look up Steph's shooting numbers against him.) But Marcus is a big who is 6'3" more than a guard. He plays like Draymond and KG. Sniffing out threats and deterring drives and filling in cracks in real time because he's reading the game so fast.

Because Jimmy is basically a taller version of Jrue in term of body type (Strong lower body), core strenght and body control, and unlike bigs like KAT or Embiid, Jimmy is just as fast as Jrue, maybe even faster, so Jrue can’t beat him with his speed, and can’t beat him with his strenght in the post because Jimmy is 6’7 not 7ft so his center of gravity is lower … It’s the same with Lebron, i’ve seen Lebron bullying Jrue many times, and that’s because he has the perfect combination of size, athleticism, body control and of course skills. Jrue can lock down or slow down slow big men with poor handles like KAT, AD or Porzingis, or small guys without an elite off ball game like Dame, Kyrie or Trae Young, but he will struggle against big strong/athletic/skilled wings like Jimmy, Lebron, Doncic, KD, Giannis, Kawhi, PG or Zion, or against super athletic and skilled guards like ANT, SGA, Spida or Ja, or against elite shooters and off ball players like Curry ..

There's a lot left out of context in this game. So to be fair, I felt Embiid rushed a couple of these possessions because of the uniqueness of the look. That's not happening again. For example, the drop-step hook is absolutely the shot we wanted. The touch wasn't there and it missed. But what they don't talk about is how unconventional this front is and what it opens up: The 3-ball. We were like 3(or 4)-for everything from 3. If that doesn't happen again, both Maxey/Embiid are capable of hitting the cross pass to 'shooters'(I want my 76ers to go out and acquire some shooters because right now, the aforementioned big-2 basically carry 50% of our 3pt shooting.). The look annoyed Joel/76ers, but it did not impede our offense. If/when we see it again, it won't be nearly as 'effective'. Gimmicks like that only work the first time you see them.

When Porzingus was in NY and Smart was in Boston, Smart guarded KP and in those 2 games KP has his worst 2 games of the year that season. It was a drastic drop in production while guarded by Smart, and it was because Smart kept pressing up on his legs ans KP couldn't move and if he brought the ball down it would make Smart strip it from him. It was a master class of how to guard a giant with a guard.

With the way the game is played today, it's easier to do so. Jrue Holiday couldn't do the same on Hakeem or Shaq or Kareem. But the constant rotations they now have on defense, how centers today dont' focus as much on post up play, and how the post up play has lower value relative to the average score today (i.e. compared to the ORtg), it's more relatively effective today for a player like Jrue to defend a player like Embiid.

Everyone here doesn’t know how defense works possession by possession, the literal videos says when he guarded him he only scored 2 points on him, just cause he scored 27 on 50% doesn’t mean he did it on Jrue Holiday, this is why defense is hard to award because the media doesn’t know what they are watching and so do fans that only watch one side of the ball

Bucks valued Jrue. But they valued him a little too much after 2021. He ended up being the 2nd/3rd option on offense while still being the perimeter anchor. I feel it put too much on him especially when Middleton wasn't playing up to level in the playoffs. With the Celtics he can be more unleashed on defense because the Jays and KP are more of the options on offense.

Ben said it best in his Chet Holmgren video. There are 'unicorn bigs' in the league who are just parading as tall 3&D players. So it makes sense to treat them as such when they get the ball at the perimeter and especially if you have a strong guard who can play defense against them.
