Is Giannis Antetokounmpo the Defensive Player of the Year? Does his teammate Brook Lopez have a strong case? And how have the Bucks been able to dominate on defense in the 2019-20 season?
This detailed film breakdown & scouting report explores the Bucks defensive strategy and Giannis's impact while incorporating analytics & stats to assess his overall impact.

-Backpicks BPM is a proprietary model that focuses on player skill instead of situational value. It is box score only.
-PIPM is a hybrid model (box score and plus-minus) that "luck-adjusts" plus-minus data (regresses FT% and 3pt%) to account for noise and is more sensitive to a player's role/fit on a given team. Created by @JacobEGoldstein
-RAPTOR is 538's model that blends box score information, plus-minus data and player tracking data to estimate player impact. projects.fivethirtyeight.com/...

Bucks have 5 guys in the top 10 in defensive efficiency. Bledsoe is a all nba defender, giannis is a all nba defender, brook is the best rim protector, Middleton is a good wing defender and so is wesley matthews. Then add in robin lopez, donte divencenzo, George hill, erson ilyasova, ect. Brook, giannis, robin are the top 3 rim protectors in the league this year and the bucks are rated the best defense since the 04 pistons. People who disagree that there the best defense are delusional.

No matter how the game changes, the bread and butter of dunks and lay-ups are the heart of basketball. Bucks' defense knows that. Plus, the efficient shooting crew and kick outs from Giannis essentially nullifies any extra threes they might give up. I for one, am interested to see how this works in a playoffs. Will hot shooting teams catch fire, or will the inability to get a secure rim attempt throw teams off???
@za5528
@za5528 4 жыл бұрын
i know they've refined the system since then but last playoffs we got an idea of what might happen against an elite team with the personnel to 1) build a wall to defend Giannis 2) make a ton of those threes offered up by the system + possibly 3*) make the midrange shots left open from drop coverage very few teams have the personnel to do both (maybe only the Clippers and Raptors though the Raptors may not have enough star power this time, possibly the Celtics, a full-strength Warriors) unless they either have a crazy shooting night like the Sixers on Christmas day, or are so dominant in the paint they can negate the Bucks advantage at the rim and not need a ton of threes, which the Lakers did in their regular season game and the Sixers *could* if they're playing at their best

Great perspective as always. But to key in one point of the video, the scheme takes advantage of certain players strengths while covering up their weaknesses. And that has always been the over arching concept the history of great NBA defenses. Giannis' playing stellar help defense lets Brook/Robin do their drop back role and protect the rim. If the person driving tries to slip around Giannis is around and most likely will find a way to help out. To a point where he is present in multiple sequences even to the point where he's also challenging the shot at the rim.This also impacts the Bucks perimeter on-ball defenders like Bledsoe and DiVicenzo. Bledsoe whose really good at snaking around screens so he can bulldog his target and plays into the overall defensive scheme. So all the players are on-point with their roles which allows them to get the most out defending every given situation outside of certain teams and what matchups they can bring.

Bledsoe, Wes, and Donte are all fantastic man wing defenders, pat and Khris put in a ton of effort, even if they aren’t as talented on D, and they have a lot of freedom to chase above screens because Giannis and the bros Lopez are going to clean up any sloppiness.

Knowing the Bucks scheme especially when laid out as beautifully as it is in this video is why I hate when people talk about the Raptors last season making a ton of threes like it was a fluke. The Bucks defense is built on protecting the rim at the expense of conceding a ton of (more open) threes and strategically leaving options open like he says here, Toronto took advantage of it by having 5 good shooters on the floor at all times (especially Powell, VanVleet and Ibaka off the bench) and making a ton of the shots they were open for, especially after two teams in the Magic and Sixers who used their length to bother the likes of VanVleet at the perimeter a lot more. It wasn't some random coincidence even if Hardwood Paroxysm and Bucks Twitter insist it was a fluke. They refined it this season but the philosophy and its potential soft underbelly remains Toronto only lost Game 1 after Robin Lopez became Tall Klay Thompson for a night and once they figured out the adjustment to defend Giannis they won 4 straight games because it was paired with ruthlessly attacking the Bucks' scheme of allowing a ton of threes. That's the flaw with their system, it works perfectly against almost everyone unless they're making their threes. When they got blown out by Philly late last December it was because the Sixers uncharacteristically made 50% of their threes and Milwaukee allows a ton of those. If they play a team that shoots 3s at a high enough eFG% comparable to the points they're preventing at the rim they're susceptible
@TheRealNog
@TheRealNog 4 жыл бұрын
The amount of threes that FVV made last year was undeniably a fluke/a crazy hot stretch which is unsustainable
@za5528
@za5528 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealNog the bucks system leaves them open to an elite catch-and-shoot player catching fire, which is the kind of thing that happens in playoff series. it wasn't unforeseeable because we know role players having insane stretches is a common-ish playoff occurence and they made no adjustments when it started happening especially because they have a "pick our poisons and leave some players more open than others" defensive philosophy since they focus on the rim at the expense of the perimeter, which only works if there's at least one poor shooter in the rotation, which the raptors didn't. that meant the guy they picked to leave more open was the coldest shooter coming into the series and the shortest player who they thought they'd be able to close out even from a distance due to their length, which was vanvleet. they basically offered up those opportunities to vanvleet on purpose and he took advantage. that choice was a major factor yeah fvv made a lot more than what would be expected which contributed to how comfortably the Raptors won the four games in a row and part of it was that he was on fire after his son was born, but a big part of it was also that he's a knockdown shooter who was finally getting a ton of more open looks after living a nightmare in the Sixers series
@ahmedibrahim7672
@ahmedibrahim7672 4 жыл бұрын
a z no because FVV shot 10% against philly and 57% against the bucks that’s why people say it’s because he had a baby in his career he was never over 40% but suddenly he makes 57%
@za5528
@za5528 4 жыл бұрын
@@ahmedibrahim7672 and did the bucks defensive scheme make no difference as to why? the sixers closed out on him and used size to bully him because they're a team of giants with a bullyball defensive scheme and it contributed to him shooting far worse than usual. the bucks conceded a ton of open 3s and particularly allowed vanvleet to take a ton of open 3s. 57% may be unsustainable but you'd expect a good catch-and-shoot player given that much space to take that many 3s to shoot above 40%. he's at 39% this year on a lot of attempts many off the dribble and he's always been good from 3
@CGoon1993
@CGoon1993 4 жыл бұрын
You are right and wrong at the same time. 1.The raps use the same paint first perimeter second defense although the coverage mechanics are different hence why they are top 2 defenses. 2. The only standout difference is that the bucks reaction/closeout time is quite slower on shooters compared to the raps who close out hard pretty consistently. The bucks closeout time issue from last playoffs could be due to lack to experience in an elite system(kidd to bud) and most likely will be much better this playoffs. 3. Nurse’s desperate zone and trap defense won’t work on bud this year as has been utilizing the post up and pick and roll which was almost non existent last year and is zone buster.

Hey ElGee, i'd like to make a suggestion for your 'player profile' series. I'd like to see you break down the game of John Collins from the Atlanta Hakws. How good can this guy be in a couple of years? He's averaging 22 ppg on 66%TS in his 3rd year. Am i crazy thinking this guy could be a better version of Amare Stoudamire? I see some similarities there, but Stoudamire wasn't shooting three's at a 40% clip and i see more defensive potential in Collins. Ironically, him and Trae Young could be the 2.0 version of that Amare/Nash duo. Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks.

What is their D like compared to last year? Giannis has improved. How about the rest of the team? Great video. Very interesting that clogging the paint is legit in this era, which is essentially what you'd see in 90s + 00s bball.

A lot of people overestimate shooting especially in the playoffs. Most bigs can’t shoot that well from 3 ( only a few like towns, Jokic, dirk, pj tucker, etc.) really make you get out there. But this defense wouldn’t work against the top western conference teams

dope vid ! i don’t know if this has been done but an analysis on who would be the best player in the NBA if there were no teams, defenses, offenses, systems, etc. built around them to make them successful. For example: giannis’ bucks building their defense for him or Curry’s warriors being the perfect system for him to either shoot the ball lights or make perfect passing plays. Who would be the Best player in a scenario like that, given their pure basketball talent if they were to be put on a random team

Love this idea. When people talk about "better" players they usually talk about it as "who would win one-on-one" which ignores everything like passing, vision, playmaking, off-ball movement, basketball IQ, team defense etc

This question is intriguing but difficult to me. While true The warriors and Bucks deploy systems that adhere to their star players, it’s also true that the systems don’t function nearly as well without them. Steph and Giannis are the systems. The warriors, even with KD , were less efficient and effective offensively without Steph. Whereas with no KD, the warriors were still top 5 in net rating and very efficient with curry on the court. Same with Giannis. This Bucks team is littered with insane defensive talent yet, they are so much worse defensively with Giannis off the court. To answer though I think it’s KD. He fits in any system and will always be a tier 1 bucket generator with his ability to space the floor
@gilly2026
@gilly2026 4 жыл бұрын
Shawn Tillis I agree. It’s so difficult and i don’t even know if i managed to put in words with what i was tryna ask but i guess it was clear enough! You’re right. Warriors and Bucks system is what makes their teams and superstars flourish. I would put KD, lebron, and kawhi because i feel like in order to truly dominate without your system built around you, then a forward would be the one position to do it. Those 3 have the talent to score, defend, and attract all defenses towards them to create plays. I would just love to see an analysis on who would truly dominate the most, given these circumstances
@gilly2026
@gilly2026 4 жыл бұрын
Zayaan Ali this question has been on my mind for a while lol. I’d honestly say KD, Lebron, and Kawhi could be put on any team or system and just dominate but i need a break down analysis to prove me wrong or at least educate on who would be the absolutely most dominant in any circumstance, given the type of player they are and the talent they possess!
@za5528
@za5528 4 жыл бұрын
@@gilly2026 Yeah I think they would dominate on any team too. But I guess its also a question of how we judge "better" because if a Steph or a Giannis provides the opportunity for a smart team to build a system that raises their ceiling so much, there's an argument to be made that isn't that in itself valuable? I can understand the argument that this approach preferences floor-raisers over ceiling-raisers. Steph on a rubbish team where he has responsibilities that aren't his greatest strengths may not do as well as a more versatile player, but the more versatile player may not be the key to a GOAT-level championship team the way that Steph's unique talents allow the Warriors to be. The same way Steph wouldn't contribute as much in a "generic" system as some other stars, almost nobody else could make this extremely effective system work if they replaced Steph. Arguably the ability to allow a coach to create a flawless system is in itself part of what makes a player great. Which is why these questions are so hard to answer I think.

its what happened to them in the Toronto series last season (everyone in the Raptors rotation is a good shooter + VanVleet and co were on fire with so many more open threes available) and why they got blown out by Philadelphia on Christmas Day when Philly made a very out-of-character 50% of their 3s (partly a great shooting night, partly those 3s being easier to make when they're both more open especially for usually poor shooters) I can see drop coverage making them more susceptible to a great midrange shooter too, but there aren't a ton of midrange gods on the tier of KD and Kawhi and CP3
