I think that his QB coach (Greg Knapp) dying before the season started and the coaches deciding he should run the whole playbook for a system that isn't known for being easy to learn were two big factors that affected his development...I'm careful to not give a ton of excuses but I have to imagine those 2 points played a big factor.

Knapp would have been huge; not just for Wilson but also La Fleur, rookie OC. LaFleur wouldn't have been on the sideline for the first several games of the season, but up in the box where he clearly calls a better game.

Best 'review' I've seen of Zach so far. I watched every game last year and I truly believe in him and his talents. The criticisms are fair, processed things slowly at times, often passed on easy completions searching for big plays and just plain missed check downs and screen passes. This year will be huge for him, I know he has the arm talent to be a plus QB in this league but what really excites me is his athleticism and improv skills. With huge improvements in his weapons/protection, a full offseason with the same staff and the extreme work he put in this offseason..hoping for a BIG leap this year. Great video!

Two things mark the great QB's from the bad ones -- quick processing and accuracy in split second decisions. We can make excuses about the playbook but the fact is he still hasn't shown these traits, consistently. Yeah maybe it 'slows down' for him but I don't think the odds are in his favor. Once you get 'googly eyed' back there, it's very hard to un-googly eye it. At least not to 'elite QB' status.

What NO ONE mentions about Wilson’s “STELLAR” Junior year is that because of covid rules, all the Pac-12/Big Ten teams cancelled their non-conference games. What that meant was that BYU did not face their most difficult competition in 2020 coinciding with their glorious 11-1 season. In each of 2018/2019, they faced at least 3 ranked teams from those conferences. In 2020, they did not have to play the likes of Wisconsin(2018:6), Utah(2018:18, 2019:12), Washington(2018:11, 2019:22) and USC(2019:24), which they faced at least once in the 2 previous years.

It's a great point, and I have heard it before. Weird how the scouts looked at his numbers as if he was playing in the same context as usual. Pre-covid, he was extremely average. Quarterbacks who run a form of the West Coast system straight out of college are destined for a lengthy career. Brett Favre was drafted by the Jerry Glanville Falcons but was traded as he was merely a gunslinger sideshow in Atlanta, where Ron Wolf saw the kind of tenacity and loose confidence that teammates rally around Steve Young, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Montana and Ken Andersen are all good examples of how the West Coast Offense takes short passing to complement a quick hitting running game, using the Tight End and Running Back positions as main passing targets over locking in on the flankerback, slot back or split end Quarterbacks who settle into a system like the West Coast offense, where it's not the home run ball, but a detailed passing and running game with timing and training specifically based on quickness and good feet are the right way to establish an NFL passing game with consistency I'm yet to see a quarterback who didn't get introduced into a system that teaches pure fundamental football before expecting success who was successful in the NFL

First, I like the analysis, nice animations and interesting analysis. I do only partially agree though. I think you missed to look at the progress. The issues against the patriots: it's his second game in the NFL and working against Bill Belichick. The texans game was his first after the injury, lots of pressure because backup QBs performed as hell. The dolphins play, he didn't have the handle for the ball, that's why he didn't throw the ball. His routine throws were an issue. I liked the progress though. I believe he will be one of the most improved QBs in the NFL

@@jameshoops10 Patrick Mahomes got to sit his 1st year, and avoid many growing pains he would've had, learning in a classroom instead on a better team. The concept a QB can't learn anything from sitting is a lie thats told by people who don't play the position because evidence has proven otherwise historically. Zach shouldn't have been starting his rookie season either. its only served to risk him developing bad habits and mistakes, that he should've had time working out how to avoid making to begin with. Even without all of those other factors, the reality in hindsight was and always has been Patrick is a generational level arm talent. Zach Wilson isn't in his class at the same point of his career. people need to get that comparison out of their heads.Patrick Mahomes is gonna become a consistently lazy comparison most players aren't worthy of particularly zach, granted he has upside. its just that patrick mahomes 1st season he put up 50 touchdowns and was the MVP of the league lol. (i think that was the moment for me lol) Zach's 1st year isn't the end all be all, sometimes you have to have a manning rookie year before you take off. The issue is if his initial evaluation was overblown and overhyped all together due to the competition level he played his last year? That actually seems likely to be honest. My concern is, how far off are evaluators? its not safe to assume he'll grow out of his processing issues or that the game will slow down consistently for him.

Almost every first year QB struggles in the NFL, especially on a bad team with a rookie HC, OC, and DC. It's year two that will likely tell the tale, how quickly is he processing things after a year in the same system, with the same coaching staff, and improved talent all around him at every level? And if I'm not mistaken, he didn't throw an int for the last five games after he came back from injury. The bread isn't baked yet, let's give it some more time in the oven and see if the dough rises. Once Jets replaced Van Roten at RT with Duvernay-Tardiff, Zach Wilson seemed more calm and poised in the pocket. And I believe he finished with 9 TDs and Just 2 INT over his last 7 games. And didn't throw any INTs in his last five. All that while losing starters on the OL and RBs-WRs. It just gives me hope that with a vastly improved starting cast, Wilson can at least manage the offense way more efficiently. While continuing where he left off at end of last season. Staying calm and poised while not turning the ball over.

Wilson is talented, no doubt. But he really has to perform this season. Imo, his roster and what the Jets did for him in free agency is better than what any other team did for their 2021 rookies. He really has no excuses if he doesn't perform to at least a significant improvement on his rookie year. I'm keen to see how it plays out.

Great breakdown! I'm a Jets fan so I'm biased, but I think the two major problems will be much better this year, if not 100% fixed. First, the mental stuff. Maybe he'll never be Manning, Rodgers or Brady with the mental game. But everything I read is about Zach is that he was OVER-Processeing. And that the coaches are telling him to just focus on what he needs to focus on. With Lefluer's clock like precision plays I think that'll help if Zach takes that advice to heart. White & Flacco aren't world beaters. But they played within the scheme. Whereas Zach, in his youth, was trying to do to much. Less is more. If he thinks LESS I think he'll think faster. I think it's why he's better on the broken plays. He's reacting not thinking. The second thing you talk about, the missed layups, I feel that's more problematic. But it seems that unlike the mental aspect, this CAN be fixed just by working harder. Just repetition. The mental problems might be a hold over from college, but these little flat plays he made at BYU, right? It seems more mechanical, doesn't it? Maybe something the late Knapp could have kept at bay during the season before his untimely passing. I feel like the coaching staff knows all this. I feel like they're gonna' fix it one way or another during the pre-season. Either coach him up so the errors get reduced, OR simplify the things that are confusing him so he can just play & react as the great athlete everyone knows he is. My prediction? Not a Mahomes or even Josh Allen type year. But I say he fixes the small stuff, the Mac Jones stuff, and still wows us with the occasional big play. Enough for the Jets to get 8-10 wins and at least be in the chase towards the end of the year. Hope so.

that play at 6:00 i think yall are wrong about. Wilson made the right read just didn't hit his mark. Slay probably tips that ball or picks it off and takes it for 6, while his other guy was about 5 yards open. he just has to make that throw.

If his decision making process is that slow, he's a backup at best no matter how great his arm talent might be. NFL Defenses are just too good and too fast. Really like your videos by the way. Totally agreed with your analysis of Trevor Lawrence.

4 games into this season and yeah, this video still rings pretty true. he's struggling on some pass rushing attempts and he's been really poor against the broncos/packers. however, he's not throwing the ball away to secondaries, and he's still limiting turnovers. jets gotta hope he grows because this is still worrisome as a fan. the defense also has been helping out a ton as of late. I hope zach can at least get some TD passes soon, because it's going to become a pressing issue.

most of the clips seem to show him in shotgun, taking a 7 step drop (including the PAs) or are designed for one to two reads at most (so as to make it simpler for him to process). Was that largely how their playbook ran last year? It really seemed like: 1. He couldn't identify who was Man coverage or if he needed to go to his hot read on the pre-snap 2. Line protection never shifted or adjusted on the presnap leading to the missed rushers The latter should be either the center or vet linemen calling the shift , but perhaps if they stopped having him 10+ yards from LOS by the time he needs to decide to throw the ball, work on his fundamentals like throwing to the flat under pressure so he can complete those flat and screen passes on a consistent basis, they could do what the Pats did with Brady. The made serious gains in yardage purely by exploiting screen passes from the shotgun and split formation. Mix in PAs and RPOs, and you'd limit his thinking while giving him time to "catch up" speed wise to the NFL level.

Alot of the plays at the end were some awful concepts, play action with max protection, and only 2 or 3 guys in routes and non hot or go's. Just some slant and button hooks. A good qb coach , gotta teach him to change the play or, signal a 9 on the lone defender wr. Take your chance with a outside the numbers deep route. Hopefully they clean up the offense.

A great, but frightening breakdown. The raw physical talent is clearly there. But the inability to accurately throw to the flat or check down-some of the easiest throws there are-is a huge red flag. Processing speed may come with experience, but inaccuracy from a clean pocket is just bad.

All of the processing and decision making was negated in his junior year due to his line. I think he was sacked single digits and if you watch every game 90% of plays not one defender wins against the line. He never had to worry

100%. Sam would have done better by sitting a year and imagine him with the talent they now have. JD told Sam's parents he would surround him with players. Failed. (injuries didn't help either) The Jets are impatient, as are the fans, to wait for development toward sustainability.

The guy skipped his senior season to go in the draft and everyone said they never played anyone. No other college team traveled like his team did to play football...nor would they. His NFL QB coach dies. Starts as an NFL with young and questionable players around him and with a new HC and OC also gets hurt and misses games. No one is perfect coming out of the draft. This year will tell who he really is.

The positive is that i think he's low low like a top 5 top 3-4 runner in the league at his position. i thought he was an underrated athlete, unnecessarily when he came out, but also he didn't totally show it off too much exactly but the one breakaway run he had this year vs Jacksonville was better than the one trevor had in college vs O state. My concern is just... How many times do you do bad habits before they ingrain themselves, and thats why i need to cut the cowboy ish right now. like i need him to like do the simple stuff first and make his offense functional before, every down in 3rd and long, and every play needs to be big. its like the one, you don't find it when ur looking for it. it appears to you and you take it.
