Thank you very much for this authentic and very good comparison. I liked your complaints regarding keyboard key travel and new track pad. This reminded me similar story when 10 years ago Lenovo did the same when they remove the old style keyboard and introduced the chiklet one. I don't understand why they keep repeating same errors just to follow Apple trend. 😕

I've got a P14s Gen3 AMD and my partner has the P14S Gen2 Intel. Both are nearly specced to the max apart from the SSD (I plan on getting a 2TB drive for mine at some point). In terms of keyboards. I initially disliked the new keyboard but honestly, don't hate it. I tried the laptops side by side and noticed that the Gen 2 keyboard, while longer travel feels mushier. The new keyboard clicks in nicer. 2 things annoyed me however: 1. omission of micro SD card slot. - That would have been nice extra bulk storage in the laptop. 2. ommision of the keyboard drainage hole. Luckily I don't tend to spill drink stuff on my laptops, but so far nobody mentioned how the spill resistance on these laptops has changed.

Being a long time ThinkPad user, my quandary is I cannot have both 16:10 display and 1.8mm key travel in the same machine, I must get an old ThinkPad with 1.8mm or new 16:10 ThinkPad but not both.

If I remember correctly - you CAN upgrade ram on T14 Gen3 but only on Intel models. On the AMD models, all of the RAM is soldered onto the motherboard, but on the Intel version, one of the memory modules is slotted and it can be replaced.

lenovo hasn't knocked down the price too much for the gen 2 (in typical fashion) to squeeze enterprise customers... since I use the 1.5mm and 1.8mm side by side daily, it's a little bit more noticeable, but if you only had 1.5mm it's something you'd easily get accustomed to... the mouse is a bigger complaint , as I'd shared in the video. if you can stack an EPP discount (or even one of their id.me discounts), with one of their coupon deals to bring down the cost of a loaded G2, then I think it's a good idea.

cooling x13 vs t14 g3: unluckily T14 G3 is just allowed to draw 20 watts! As is the X13. So I expect similar performance. Not such a problem with AMD. I have L14 G3 AMD here atm and is allowed to draw 25 watts with single heatpipe instead of dual heatpipe in T14 G3 AMD (and intel+nVidia config). you can ramp it up to 40 watts with "ryzen controller" though.

interesting... surprised they allow that behavior with the L series vs T-series, it's almost as if they want the L series customer to quickly burn out their machines to buy new gear ;) I did some tests with the different configs (battery-saver, battery-performance and plugged-in) across a few benchmarking suites and saw interesting metrics across the board. Plan to create a quick video on the results as it really puts why things feel "snappy" when plugged in, into perspective

I had decided for a T14 or T14s with AMD as my next dev laptop, my XPS 13 is getting old. Unfortunately, (at least here in Sweden) they only come with Qualcomm nfa725a chip, which is not supported in Linux. There is no option to change on Lenovo's site. So I can choose between non-working WiFi with AMD, or a power-hungry and hot-running laptop and worse battery life with Intel. :(
@misterm7465
@misterm7465 Жыл бұрын
I don't understand why lenovo would do this unless there's some regulatory limitation preventing the intel chips from being shipped to Sweden, especially as all the [CTO] machines are manufactured in China prior to shipment... have you looked at using a 'forwarding service' in a nearby EU country [?] if either the X13 or p14 g3 lets you get amd + intel wifi card, I'd say they may be worth considering too.

gold standard not for long. Will get to 1.35mm in no time ;) luckily I find the 1.35 mm keyboard on Z13/Z16 for example way springier with more pregnant pressure point and resistance than the 1.5mm keyboards, whereas the Nanos 1-35mm keyboard is a bit too soft for me. Best modern keyboard with 1.8mm has my P1 G3. But I go back to my modded T430 with 2mm classic keyboard regularly.
@misterm7465
@misterm7465 Жыл бұрын
at the pace lenovo is going, I won't be surprised if they push 1.35mm soon... the G2 and P50 are certainly better key travel, but the 1.5mm is something manageable. It is noticeably inferior when jumping between machines though... my preference is still my W520, if the motherboard hadn't fried I'd still use that (non-chicklet) keyboard. I've not tried the Nano, and the Z seems be designed for a customer I don't understand.
@Veg-Power
@Veg-Power Жыл бұрын
yeah, the classic keyboard is my favorite one of all time. for the 1.5mm travel keyboard, I liked it on T14s G2, very crisp and somewhat manageable but on the T16 G1 I don't like it as much, maybe due to a different manufacturer. The L14 G3 I have here has serious keyboard flex. They got rid of the magnesium reinforcement in the base unit in L-series again. Z13: I highly dislike its design but the keyboard I do like. Just was surprised they are able to get them right even with lower travel but won't do it for the main series like X1 Nano somehow. But tbh honest there are a lot of people liking the whole concept of the Z13 haha.

I actually like the T14 because of the Intel i7 12th gen CPU. However, you make some very good points. - 1080p display (FHD) is best for battery life. - Windows 11 is trash 🗑. - No fan is a long-term concern since the laptop is commonly used by programmers, project management, or accountants. The later 2 work long hours at times. It could potentially overheat at a time when it is needed most.

Two P14s Gen 2. One is AMD Ryzen 5, 32GB Memory (16 Soldered, 16 slotted), touch screen. The second is AMD Ryzen 7, 16GB memory (soldered), non-touch. The second on (16GB) is slightly cheaper. Which one is the better option?

My suggestion is to avoid P14S Gen 2 completely. See my last video of "trackpoint stops working". It's not something that was fixed by lenovo and it is what prompted me to return the P14S g2 I bought last year. if you really want to take the gamble & don't care about using trackpoint, the second one. The p14s G2 has an open, user upgradable ram slot.

What's even worse than T14G3 trackPad buttons? I have the Z13 IPS screen version. I love the weight and build and the fake leather. It stays cool even tho half the vent on the bottom is fake, does have intake in the back too tho. The screen is gorgeous. Speakers are great. The keyboard feels cheap and not traditional by any means but I tolerate it. The trackPad is good but I don't use it. The touch screen has wacom support and runs a pen very well in photoshop etc. I can draw fine without the yoga flip style screen. The trackpoint is crap, much shorter than even a yoga trackPoint. All the software tricks can't replace the mechanical advantage of a taller trackPoint. Next, the removal of the trackpoint buttons is terrible! Don't believe the reviewers who never use the trackpoint. Here's a summary - I use "mid click enabled" mode so I don't have to hold the middle button while scrolling and this also allows one mid click to open links in a new tabs. But also, the mid click closes tabs as well. So, I'm often hitting the mid click button instead of the left click and losing my damn tabs. Also, if you click the very right side of the mid click raised dots, it activates the right click? The very left side of the raised dots doesn't activate the left click, it mid clicks as it should. They can't even map the button areas correctly and it can't be adjusted like it could be with the T440s. But the worst of all is the left click button area. It moves slightly down when you click it for some reason, which totally screws up the fake click vibration and sound mechanism. When I try to double click a folder, the sound and vibration often only registers as one click. It feels mushy and shitty and sticks sometimes or doesn't register at all. This problem cannot be fixed like the T14G3's as it's not the pad that's moving, the pad is squishing into itself. Absolute garbage. One more small gripe, the thinkpad logo sticks to my hand and feels like my palm is sweaty and sticking to the base, what a foolish design. They basically ruined what could have been my ultimate thinkPad. Anyone who values their cherished trackpoint function steer far away from this beautiful laptop.

I have bought T14s gen3 AMD Ryzen 5 with FHD touch and display is poor. I have bought T14 gen1 Intel with FHD non touch and display is also , poor. I have my main laptop P15s GEN1 with I7 and UHD display, and is very good, but i don`t want it anymore because cooler is on right side and trowing heat always and i use 6-8hours/day the mouse. Looking to buy a NEW laptop 14inch, with similar good display as the P15s (T14 (s) or P14 (s) or X1 carbon to have: - best display - good cooling - best decent to very good battery life - long keystroke When i`m saying about good cooling i compare the laptops i test now : P15s (have it since 1 year) and T14 gen1. I keep the T14 in bed with me and cooler is almost off, and no heat problem. WIth P15s you cannot do that. That`s why im looking for new and reliable 14inch laptop to fit my "requirements". I`m sure your advice would help me a lot.

Should I get T14 Gen 3 or P1 Gen 5? the 16 inch screen seems interesting to me since most of the IDE and software applications looks comfortable for me at 16 inch. but ya portability is a concern. What would you recommend?
@misterm7465
@misterm7465 Жыл бұрын
personally, I got tired of lugging around my personal + work machine, and have optimized my selections for portable all-around performance. 16" is a great size for a single workstation, but it'll weigh almost as much as two T14 ( given P1 G5 = 4lb & power brick may be ~.5 lbs -vs- 2.5lb for the T14 G3). Beyond weight, from my research earlier, there were quite a few concerns w/ the 12th gen intel (esp. throttling issues & poor battery life) which is what led me to AMD. I'd suggest researching the intel 12th gen issues, including on levovo's community forum & even reddit discussions. If you don't come across anything of concern in your research, the P1 G5 is a solid machine with beefier components.

sorry for the delay; I am keeping the device! Every time I pick up my P50 and feel the several lbs of weight I wonder how I managed to lug this thing around the world for many years. Overall it's okay. I did not see WWAN for the G3 at the time of build either, and (iirc) for the few models that did offer it (non T14G3) spec-ing it out caused ship times to slip by many months. I doubt there is wiring in place since I'd not paid for it (some models offer just wiring, iirc), not sure about slot availability also.

My P14S G2 was impacted by the trackpoint issues & I returned the device (see my trackpoint video). If you are considering the P14S G2, you should absolutely avoid the device as they have not fully fixed the trackpoint problem to date. The NVIDIA T550 may be pushing you toward the P14S G3, but know that it is not very powerful. I did side by side performance benchmark tests with my P14G2 and an X1 G9 (last yr vid) which had intel graphics and there weren't a dramatic improvement to the Nvidia. I spent some time research it this time around also and the AMD integrated graphics should net comparable, if not better performance than the T550, which is aging and super optimized for specific engineering workflows. I'd suggest trying to get your hands on a T14 G2 with maxed out CPU specs, if you can't get G3 6850. Chip shortage is easing too, so you may see inventories coming online, unless they simply don't offer it in your region.
@mosheva

@@misterm7465 thanks for the reply unfortunately I cannot get my hands on gen2 with maxed AMD nor Intel.. only last gen AMD and Intel 11.. I consider the P14s gen3 because it's lighter than gen2 and also lighter than T series.. If the Nvidia T550 is similar to Intel iris x which comes with Intel 12 gen then I don't see any reason why not to get it... If I'm not wrong the Intel 12 soc comes also with iris integrated so I might switch from the Nvidia to iris? I saw that you didn't like the gen3 touch pad since it's flat.. I can relate to that... I've also considered to get an Apple laptop and run windows with parallel.. windows just slows the laptop...

I think his P50 is anti-reflective, too. since that option on t14 g3 is 500 nits, I would say it comes down to personal taste. I for myself do like the anti-glare displays. Maybe they got better than from the P50. Look at videos of the X13 Yoga Gen 2. should look like that (but a lot brighter). looks very matte to me. here for ex.: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrZ4mMWKmN7Gkqs.html

if you value battery life 4K display will not be the best choice, imo, but I'd defer to Marvin's comments... it's possible there's progress on the new anti-glare applications they put on glossy displays now, unfortunately there's little side comparisons to make a super informed decision, although my personal preference is matte. You can always buy one, see how it is and decide in the 30 day window Lenovo provides.

I have a t470 i5200u amd. Now I bought the T14 G2 AMD Ryzen 7 5850u and the touchpad and trackpoint are complete and utter garbage. I have never experienced anything even close to this horrible. The trackpoint drifts more often than not, the touchpad has (I'm serious) 150ms response time (sometimes you think it has not detected your action, repeat the action, and THEN it moves), the trackpoint middle button clicks before it registers a press (so you just press it really hard and hope). I have not used a mouse with a laptop for over 10 years, but had to order a mouse after 24 hours. I hate using this thing. Lots of people seem to have issues now. This appears to be a combination of hardware, firmware (which synaptics have been solving for like a year), and software (which the kernel devs seem to be solving for months).

@@misterm7465 What are your thoughts about macOS regarding application usage for your field of work and apple's M1 chips (max, pro)?

 @Dan Sotnikov I'm most familiar with WindowsOS and rely a lot on MSFT Office suite products, which is more optimized for Windows. Most people at the companies I've been affiliated with are macOS users though, and in the recent years it's gotten big in mainstream corporate culture, especially among software engineers. The M1 chips introduce some compatibility issues for software running locally, and unique bugs that may require specialized debugging (from what I've observed), but I've seen they're also extremely efficient for certain tasks. I do not appreciate where MSFT is taking Windows 11 with so much telemetry, and am entertaining a move to MacOS over the next handful of years
