I am a strong believer in buying business class laptops and business class laptops ONLY. Once the large enterprises are done with them or their support cycle comes to an end eBay, and craigslist (the used market) flood with these wonderful and reliable computing devices of yesteryear. My beloved Dell Latitude D820 of which i owned from 2010 to 2016 was a trooper. It was old when I got it and now it is very much is a relic. That is the machine that got me into PC gaming and hardware....it will be missed. Consumer grade laptops can suck it, they are not modular, you can not find parts for them and their support cycle is limited. The business class laptop may be ugly but is reliability and flexibility is beautiful.

After a few months of intensive research on older model laptops, in late 2019, I purchased a Levono Thinkpad X230 laptop in February 2020. There were 3 things I looked for... In order of most importance, Number 1. Windows 7 OS capable. So many models, especially now that Windows 7 stopped support in January, do not support Windows 7. Most laptops manufactured after 2015 or so, do not work with Windows 7. I mean, with my limited knowledge you cannot get it to work. Number 2. Original Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Sure I could buy a dongle, but I wanted it to be original from the manufacturer. Finally number 3. A Backlight Keyboard. Not only did this notebook have all 3, to my surprise, Thinklight is also included, which I had no idea it existed, let alone in combination with the already manufacturer equiped backlight keyboard. In my opinion - THIS IS THE BEST LAPTOP of 2010s. I typed this comment with my x230, Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise (yes, DUAL BOOT, I did also installed 10 Enterprise, for when browsers sadly stop support on 7 :'/ ).

What a fantastic video - thanks! I too love older ThinkPads, but I don't have anything older than the X250 and T450s at the moment. I'm really tempted to buy a secondhand X220 just for the keyboard (I love the keyboards on those things). A cheap secondhand X250 can usually be purchased for not much more than the listings of those X230's. BTW - when you mentioned you do video editing on the X230, my brain exploded (with amazement). Incredible!!

When you factor in the cost of the better LCD, SSD, and the dock, you're typically looking at over $200. And with the trackpad being as bad as it is in this model, I find it really difficult to recommend, but I do still like it in a lot of ways. Dual storage capabilities, epic battery life, and rather good performance are its biggest strengths.

surfingsuicune They kind of DID, just not that many people know of it, and it requires you to be comfortable with taking apart part of your laptop to get there. Get a T440p and switch out the track pad with a T450. It’s a perfect fit. Next, swap out the processor to a i7-4910mq and fit an aftermarket IPS screen for less than a hundred extra and you have a six-year-old machine that now outperforms (via Passmark benchmarking scores) a brand new and maxed out T480. That with a used $35 docking station and you have a VERY capable laptop.

My X220 runs Win 10 perfectly, so I’m sure the later T440p will be just fine. Take a look here. octoperf.com/blog/2018/11/07/thinkpad-t440p-buyers-guide/ That guy’s in France, but his info is solid.

Great video! - i love my x230, i was looking around for ages for a cheap and decent laptop, i also have the IPS display and backlit keyboard, 12gb ram, i installed a 256gb SSD in the spare m-pcie slot with a standard mechanical drive 500GB in the 2.5 inch bay as extra storage which i might upgrade to 1TB. The other cool thing i am about to play with is to use the Expresscard slot (which is 5gb/s supposedly) for an external GPU (1050ti which i got cheap). With all that combined its punchy and holds up well. I literally rave about my x230 to people and mostly people cant see why i love it so much because it looks like something from the 1980s..... which is also something i like about it. 'Mr. President we have the launch codes' lol!! I think its just great and for that price id even consider buying one for my little brother to get him into moding and fixing computers which ive been doing since i was about his age.

AM using this beautiful machine backlit keys wow right now Just look at this spec X230, IPS, 8Gb, i7-3520M, 480 SSD, Win10, bt, webcam, Fingerprint, 12mWarranty I had a MacBook pro but had to sell it last year.It was the same year of make and exactly the same processor. I sold it on ebay for around £600 This is IMHO a far better machine than the MacBook pro to login in a few seconds using my fingerprint is so cool Will go watch your video again as might go for the dock idea.Can it run 2 external monitors? Mind you I might link it to my smart tv screen as I do a lot of music and recording and this man is now my control centre !

I just got one on an eBay auction for 107£ for my brother cause he wanted a laptop for uni :) it already had the IPS screen and 8gb RAM, the Samsung 860 Evo 500GB should be arriving today. I've already repasted it and cleaned out the fans. Looks brand new, doesn't even have a scratch on. The best part, the battery was never used, Lenovo Vantage app says it only underwent 6 charge/discharge cycles and after all that time still has 98% original capacity :D my guess someone just left it in the dock at the office since getting it and now they were replacing their IT :)

I am a APPLE nut but needed a windows laptop for a project & have fallen in love with my 230. It is built like a tank (unlike my $3500 mac pro). I stuck a $90 MSSD, replaced the mechanical 320GB drive with a 3TB drive just for data and stuck 16GB ram. Bought a cheap dock and this machine even runs Photoshop with out a problem, only other upgrade I want to do is fit a back-lit keyboard (not sure if it's a plug and play fit). I can't believe the performance of this cheap machine and I even like it's looks. I don't like the touch pad but as i sit at a desk just plug in a mouse. About to order a 430 to play with. I find myself using this machine far more than my mac, really only use the mac for video rendering now. Thanks for this video Arthur, need to spread the word. As a side note, i did look at modern windows computers and even the cheap $600 models feel so cheap. What did you mean about the BIOS upgrades? I also noticed that the processor can easily be changed to a i7 variant with the addition of a different heat sink.

Sharing your apprecition on my X230 and can only recommend to everyone to get a cheap one and swap the common HDD for an SSD. However, I unfortunately only have an TN panel and just the IPS Panel unit costs about 70 € which up to now stopped me from upgrading ;( So if you can, go for an IPS version! @Arthur Reeder: I just depleated my 6cell battery and will get a replacement. As you have the 9cell, how do you feel about carrying it around with the 9 cell? I always liked the form of the 6cell to have good grip but fear the 9cell makes holding it uncomfortable.
@atfirstiamhuman91835 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your answer. I just got the 9cell battery and can verify its probably even better to hold now :) And its just a nice feeling to know i get legit 6-9 hours of battery life with it.

For those who are considering the x230, please allow me to state some cons. 1) battery is much shorter compare to the next gen x240 2) it's hard to clean fan and re apply thermal paste for non DIY users. 3) need an mini display to hdmi adapter. The video is a good and honest review. I just wish to add the other side of the coins for other people to consider. I personally compare to similar like dell e6330 and e6320 and next gen x240. That's few cons I come out with.
@reoencarcelado5904 Жыл бұрын
@yesman: The X240 uses a "U"-series (ie. "Ultrabook"-series) processor, which consumes less watts than the "M"-series (ie. "Mobile"-series) processors of the X220 and X230, but the flip-side is that they're less-Powerful than the "M"-series processors; It's simple Physics. The battery consumption, of any hardware, also depends on how intensive is the activity you do on it. Watching a DVD or Bluray movie on it will [obviously] be more-intensive than writing a Word-document or a Notepad text-file. (And will therefore make your battery deplete faster). The X240 also has only 1 Ram-slot, not 2. So therefore, the maximum amount of Ram you can have on the X240 is 8 gigabytes of Ram, not 16, like you can [have] on the X230. Also: the "PowerBridge"-technology doesn't work worth a damn. There's complaints all over the Internet of the internal battery charging first BEFORE the external one (when it's supposed to be the other way around), or the internal-battery not charging at all. Also: You are advised to make sure no electricity is flowing through the computer BEFORE you change the Ram-modules and/or the internal-storage, and in the case of laptops, you do that by unplugging the laptop from the AC-adapter AND removing the battery. But you cannot do that if the battery is welded[/glued] onto the motherboard. [And "disconnecting/disabling" the internal-battery in the Bios gives no guarantee that no electricity is still--flowing *through* the laptop when you open-it-up to replace the Ram-modules and/or the internal-storage drive.] It's best to not have laptops that have batteries welded [and/or soldered and/or glued] onto the motherboard.

Does x230 accepts low voltage (1.35v) ram?
@AaronR-C5 жыл бұрын
Almost all 1.35v "LV" DDR3 is tolerant of standard voltage, so while machines that require LV RAM can't accept older modules, you can put newer modules in to older machines as long as they support the clocks/timings on the EEPROM (JDEC standards) I used LV 8GB modules in my x230T so you're almost certainly fine.

@armorgeddon5 жыл бұрын
Haha ok, that explains at least the beer prices. Running the operating system from an SD card will stress most SD cards very much, so they wear out very fast. Compact Flash cards are better for that but an SSD is still much more reliable of course thanks to complex wear leveling. An SD card has no wear leveling mechaniscm at all. If you end up using SD or Compact Flash make sure to set options of operating system to write as little as possible to the memory card. Greets!

Older ddr3 ram is very cheap. If you buy it used even more so (like 20$).

I can get a x230 for 150 and a x250 for 260 dollars. Wich one u'll pick in my situation ?? (X230 has 4GB RAM and 320 HDD no backlight keyboard, X250 has 8GB RAM and 240 SSD with backlight Keyboard)

@Jesus-Guillermo: I suggest you go with the X230. It has more modular-components than the X250, it has a better and more-Durable design, and it has features like a Physical on-off switch to disable the WiFi card, and you can more-easily replace the laptop's internal-storage drive and the laptop's Ram modules. (In addition to the fact that the X230 has two (2) Ram slots, whereas thereafter Lenovo started having soldered-onto-the-motherboard Ram instead-of 2 Ram slots). (If memory serves me the X250 has only one ram-module slot and the rest is soldered-onto-the-motherboard Ram).

That looks like Homestead Florida. I love Homestead because it a hop, skip and jump from the Everglades .. that begs the question as to why you have absolutely not tan dude? I love my X230, and my X201 and my X131E and even my Edge 15. My next target is a T480 .. then maybe look at some of the older models .. just for fun. Lenovo are the best with maybe having to share that accolade with the mid - late 1990's Toshiba Tecra line.

There’s nothing wrong with a Real Man saving money and maxing-out his technology, if no other reason than to save precious MONEY! And LUNIX is something I may have to learn since we know that MIcrosoft is going to start charging for Windows 10 and beyond.

I think the Smartphone only people is a good thing, in the long run, Microsoft right now is trying to make a portable (handheld) computer that meets the requirements of a real computer, it's called Andromeda. Why I say this is a good thing is because more and more companies will wanna follow up the market if Microsoft's product became a success. and it doesn't have to be a ranaway success because replacing computers, is not really the aim here, it's giving more VIABLE option.

Yeah external monitor. I don't know what part of that needs hacking.
@nostalgix84305 жыл бұрын
@@armorgeddon Trick was not to use an external monitor but to increase the resolution on the internal display. It's a xrandr tweak.

Can anyone please confirm that this laptop can do 4K at 30Hz (via minidisplay port to display port). Here it says it can, but I can not find confirmation: www.thinkscopes.com/2014/08/10/thinkpad-compatibility-with-4k-lcd-thinkvision-pro2840m/ Thank you very much! (I want to order an LG 24UD58 for about 200 bucks, for office-like use, and if it works it would be a still :) )
@luisluiscunha5 жыл бұрын
Ok: I bought a 4k monitor (LG 24 UD 58), and I can confirm that the x230 works via miniDP to DP at full 4k resolution, at 30 Hz (perfect for office, programming, etc). Don't expect gaming, of course (you are a ThinkPad owner, so it shouldn't be a problem), and if you try to play KZfaq at 4K resolution, it will freeze. But you can use full 4k at 30 hz, and with the LG is amazing!! Did I mention I paid about 500 bucks for a 300€ refurbished laptop (Thinkpad x230, i5-3320M, 8Gb, 240 SSD Evo860) + 200€ 4k IPS monitor :) It makes it so rewarding...
