A magazine photographer, Ben Calvo, shot 16mm film in his spare time. I selected the best 10% of his 45 minutes of footage and added a modern interpretation of 1950s beatnik style music. Ben Calvo's effort deserves discovery by a greater audience. I recognized his choices and style of shooting as being similar to my own. After the film is some information about the Manhattan els and the 3rd Avenue line's place in that history. Also noted are the particulars of the MUDC cars, none of which were preserved.
If you would like to learn about the full history of the Manhattan Els I recommend you purchase this book erausa.org/publication-sales/...
A similar book is in the works for the Brooklyn Els.

Extremely professional and much appreciated. Love the cars, trucks, and buses, too. Notwithstanding, people were civil back then. The country ran smoothly with law and order.

I seem to recall the original film being in color. Yet Black and White suits the mood of the story. Even in those blue collar days, this great Elevated had a life and energy all its own. Shame on the city elders for demolishing these great public works. How crazy to know that New Yorkers had more transit options in the first 50 years of the 20th Century than now! 😪🇵🇷🇺🇸📽🗽🦂😎

When I was a kid I remember riding the Third Avenue El but back then, 1965 - 70, it ran from Gun Hill Road in the Bronx to 149th Street and Third Avenue. It had already ended service south of 149th.

It's always amazing to see glimpses into the past like this, and as always the music is incredible. A small but potent window into a bygone era!

Great video - wicker seats; incandescent light bulbs; leather hand straps; and conservative fashion! Wish I could go back in time to visit this era of NYC. There was no place like it. Shame it's all gone.

This 3rd Avenue Elevated line shouldn't never be taken down . They let the track frames trestle get rusted and cracks on them and did not take care of it properly I understand that if was slow ridership and all that. Adleast they could of used it for trains to layup. Do a complete over hual inspections on the 3rd Avenue Elevated line. This would not be a big issues and they really helped out the 2 5 trains and the BX 29/26 buses. And now it's completely dead. Now they have the technology to rebuild so they don't have to make no loud noises anymore.

thank you for the pictures at the end of the entire 1954 report. I read through it and it definitely felt like the author slanted it to validate the demolition. It's also obvious to the reader that the decline in patronage was directly due to the demolition of the line south of Chatham Sq and the City Hall branch, and it probably would still be useful if it continued there.

The city set the Els up for failure especially after the IRT subway opened. The IND basically wiped out Fulton and 9th. The system would be even more amazing had the original Els still stood

One of my childhood favorites was peering into apartments from the el. The 3rd Ave. came down when I was seven.

Thanks for posting, I really enjoyed it! The music was a nice touch. Going to be watching it again on a big screen TV, a phone doesn't do it justice.

I didn’t know the Manhattan 3rd Avenue Elevated. When it got torn down in 1955, I was one-and-a-half years old-so I was just too young for it to affect me.
