What is the best Rum for a Rum and Coke? That is a question I do get asked a lot. So in this video, I want to dissect the best rum you could use for a Rum and Coke. What are the different Styles of Rum that could work better in a Rum and Coke? Is Spiced Rum and Coke better than a Bacardi and Coke. In this video, I don't profess to know what the best Rum of Coke is, I merely want to get you thinking if there is something better out there to what you're used to!

When I worked in the Bahamas Mrs. Bacardi would occasionally come in for lunch when she was in town. The only thing she drank was Bacardi light with 2 slivers of ice. We asked why as we had a plethora of other Bacardi options. She said it was the best because it was unadulterated.

I 2nd this. I loved Appleton Estates V/X and coke. Now its hard to find. So I have a AE Reserve Blend. So delicious.

I have enjoyed using the generic Kirkland Spiced Rum. It really does super well as a mixer and the cost is super low compared to other rums.

I've been experimenting with my different rums for a while now and finally have an answer! Hamilton 86 demerara is very characterful and DELICIOUS, the burnt caramelly notes really stand up to the coke. I'm also gonna have to agree regarding plantation OD as well, easily one of the best I've tried. To my tastebuds, most white rums just get lost in a sea of coke, especially most spanish style rums...maybe that's why they're so popular in a rum and coke? Maybe I just use too much coke? /shrug

We'd love to get Hamilton in the UK, but they just don't import this way. That said, it's just a DDL blend, and we have plenty of Pussers and El Dorado this way. Plus all the individual stills too, so i'm sure we can recreate Hmitlon very easily.

Some may think I’m unsophisticated, and maybe I am, but I like Bacardi Gold with Mexican Coke that is in some markets here in the United States. The cane sugar in the Mexican Coke has a much smoother feel on my tongue than the “real” Coke made with high fructose corn syrup, that is the norm in the states.

Yeah, for me you can have the best rum in the world, but if it's mixed with high-fructose corn syrup coke, it sucks. Finding the sugar coke in the local la tiendas is the hard part.

Hey Steve, really happy to find your channel today. I don't know what it was but the first time I had a rum and coke it was an instant hit for me. I was very young, just getting a sneaky taste at Christmas time 🤭 I'm Canadian and my mothers side of the family are from Barbados, so Banks was my first experience with rum. For the cheaper prices I also like Brugal and El Dorado 8yo. Still searching for the perfect rum and next up on my hit list is Equiano rum, or flor de cana, either or :]

Greetings from the U.S. I’ve been branching out from spiced rums lately, which I’ve loved for years. Started getting into sipping. Recently picked up some Plantation pineapple and Doorly’s XO, along with an El Dorado 12. They are all very different, but as of now I prefer the Plantation. Have you ever tried Shanky’s Whip with coke? I know it’s not rum- it’s a whiskey liqueur but it is delicious. Also recently switched to Coke Zero because regular is just too sweet for me now.

Yep, started out with Bacardi white, and soon moved on. I spent many a years with either Captain Morgan's Dark or Havana Club Reserve. Now I like my spiced 'toy' rums, both Sailor Jerry's & Kraken. And like you, I have moved on to the Coke Zero for a less sweet molasses taste. I usually sip my other higher end rums neat, but every once in a while...

Steve, you knew I was going to comment on this as Rum and Coke is my favorite drink. My absolute favorite is Chairman's Reserve spiced rum and coke; especially with a good cigar. My second favorite might just be the ElDorado 12 year you recommended to me. BTW, I can't get ahold of the Pussers Gunpowder proof spiced rum here in the US; nowhere to be found. I don't know if we've found the ultimate, but the darker ones do always seem to vibe right for us. Admittedly, we don't have a lot of cola in the house at all, but on the rare occasion, we've often just had a basic Flor de Caña to acceptable results. Nothing offensive. We've got that 1888 right now that might be alright. We'll try it and see! Thanks for this Steve!

Need to revisit Brugal 1888. Not had that in years. I even had pouring deals with Brugal back in 2012-2015. So went through a tonne of it. Which is probably why i forget about it now!

Been doing a lot experimenting with Cuba Libres. Rum, coke and lime. Bacardi is great however try rum blends of 3 to 1. 3 parts Bacardi and 1 part of any rum you like. Works well

Since I'll mix it anyways and like it light on the rum side, I purchased one called Centenario (gold rum) produced in my country spent $6 and got 2 free 600ml bottles of coke. Went for the price and convenience but for an end of the month guilty pleasure worked wonders!

Ha, when available, Centenario in the UK is waaaaaay more expensive than that! Stupid money. I think thats why it doesn't have a great Rep. People accept Captain Morgans for example as it is so cheap. But if Capt Morgs was double the price, they'd laugh it out of the UK!

At home my go to is Pusser’s Blue and Coke Zero. Hard to find Pusser’s in local bars but many have Myers. I’m in Texas. Great video!

Diplomatico Planas and Mantuano are wonderful. And for a little splurge, the Ron Reserva Exclusiva also makes a fantastic rum & coke. They all also work insanely well with root beer

Need to get on the Root Beer train!!! Agree Planas is great. Exclusiva waaaay too sweet for me now. Used to love it, but it’s too heavily sweetened and in my head, if I still want something like that, I go for a decent Spiced Rum at half the price.

Currently, my favorite rum for a rum and coke is Doorly's 8-yr. If I cannot find that, then the Bacardi 8 ("OH-CHO") is a good alternative and hard to beat at the price in the US market. BTW, I've hugely upped my mojito game based on your advice... and I've added a couple of tweaks to make it even better.

Hi Steve, I haven’t touched Coke since 50 years ago, yes, 17 when I ODd on Bacardi & Coke. Never bought a bottle of Bacardi since. Any rum but is happily acceptable. I do love a propr dark and stormy. Nick from York

A proper dark and stormy only uses goslings rum as they have copyright over the name... any other rum mixed with ginger beer and lime is known as a safe harbour. My particular favourite for a dark n stormy is gosling 151... and for a safe harbour woods navy. Both bang out extra abv which adds to the flavour of the ginger beer.

Bumbu XO and coke. my drink of choice has always been Bacardi silver and coke, but once and a while I stray. Altho I hate to spend so much money on an alcohol I have never tasted before, I still tried this one and loved it.

I really like red leg with coke but mount gay eclipse does seem to disappear by the bottle when that's open. Thinking of trying bicardi 8yr old. Any good?

I guess my favorite for a rum and coke is either Bacardi Gold (nice and cheap) or Bacardi Cuatro (On the nicer end but still fits in my budget). If I have to do a spiced rum it'll be Captain Morgan Private Stock or Kilo Kai (that has some really nice anise notes).

For the price, you can’t beat Flor de Caña 4 Extra Seco. It’s one of my favorite mixing rums and makes a killer Cuba Libre.

My top 3 rums to have with coke are Siesta Key spiced, Foursquare spiced rum and Jonah's Curse Black Spiced Rum. For silver rum I go with Copper Bottom Silver Rum.

Myers dark rum and dr. Pepper has sent me in a rum path. They are great but a little sweet by the time i finish the can. Started watching more of your vids and have fallen in love with rum. Plantation 5 year is the best ive found for sipping so far.. Costco's spiced rum (Kirkland brand) is the budget friendly once in a while sipper. Doorlys was very poor in flavor. Just bought some bacardi gold today, and its different. Jury is still out, but its immensely better than the Doorlys. Rum and coke for that one for sure

Bacardi is the fav at the moment and I've heard good things about donQ. And I'm currently experimenting with with some imported Jamaican Rum. But I believe when it comes to flavor Bacardi is my go to rum.

I just tried foursquare spiced rum and coke. The “rum” (not technically rum, 35% abv) by itself is not a sipper, but the spices pair well with the cola. It also has no sugar, which is a rarity for most spiced rums, and was a great price. If you can get your hands on it, I recommend at least giving it a try.

Just tried Lambs spiced and Coke Zero quite nice and cheap as chips as well. Got to find a substitute for Jack Daniels honey and Appletiser after the dreaded Diabetes diagnosis 😞 Any suggestions for Glayva sugar free if possible 👍

Oooooo. The thing with liqueurs, they have a tonne of sugar anyway. Liqueur without sugar is just Spirit. That’s tough to answer to be honest. Come on a Live Stream and ask, cos my brain will be in gear then. 👍

I have only been into my Rum for about 5yrs now. My go to for a spiced one is Rumbullion navy strength and for standard it's Kirk & Sweeney. I do put a splash of coke in both.

My goto is still havana club especial but I think the ED12 is a better rum and coke, or rather, cuba libre to be technical as I always include the lime :P I really like the havana club personally and its among the cheapest bottles I can pick up. It just works for me (I also have a weak spot for captain morgan dark in a cuba libre XD But prefer especial) If I don't have lime my goto is currently rumbullion, I've kept a bottle on the regular just for that since I discovered it, its a delicious combo! (I discovered rumbullion through your channel too btw :P)

Interesting. I’ve not done “and Coke” in 30 years!😂 I was a Captain Morgan guy back in those days. Today I’m not very fond of the vanilla bomb. The Kraken black is my favorite spiced rum. I assume if I ordered from a bar I was getting some sort of Bacardi. I might give it a go and see what I like, if anything these days. I have Kraken and Mount Gay on the shelf. Might do me a little taste test.

Just grab a better Spiced Rum. Not sure where you are, I assume not UK, cos Bacardi Oakheart got rebrands to Bacardi Spiced back in 2018/2019, so we haven't had Oakheart for years here. I only say that cos in the UK we have hundreds and hundreds of Spiced Rums. BUT. a fantastic worldwide brand would be Chairmans Reserve Spiced. Thats always in my top 3.

It depends on the mood, but I would tend toward Wray and nephew, barrilito 3 star, or flor de cana (at least 7 year). I am particularly fond of barrilito, but it's occassionally hard to source outside of PR.

I love Lambs with Diet Coke 😋 I love Kraken but find it leaves a sort of syrupy film in your mouth after a few, not sure if that’s just me 😂

Definitely Bumbu XO in the black bottle, after tasting 30 different rums. Its seems slightly spiced but not overly spiced like Kraken. Bumbu XO has the perfect balance also.

El Pasado de Oro XO is my favorite rum and coke. Quite a bit of vanilla and very smooth. You can mix it strong.

Bacardi was my choice around year 2000 but they moved bottling location to Germany and for 10years i didn't like the taste but when I tried again around 2013 they had go back to the Puerto Rico plant again and now it's my standard rum and coke again. I prefer regular coca cola and another rum that are really good is Matusalem 7 year/anejo (it should be mixed quite strong to taste good) and also the Filipino rum Tanduay.

Yeah. A lot of of them huge brands are bottled around the world. Cos it’s cheaper to ship in Big IBC containers instead of individual glass bottles. So a lot of brands will be bottled in the country of sale, or continent at very least. Also don’t forget different size bottles for different markets. Europe and 70cl bottles will be bottled in Europe. 75cl will be bottled US way.

The Contrabando 5 Anos is terrible when you try it neat, but it is a great mixer for a Rum and Coke! It adds a vanilla note which usually isn’t really my thing in rum and/or coke but is absolutely great when it’s balanced with a bit of lime

@@StevetheBarmanUK yes! It’s the same with the Myers OD for me. I can’t stand the dark and musty molasses, gingerbread sweetness on it’s own, but it adds some nice layers when mixed in a cocktail.

Captain Morgan spiced rum private stock. It has a more caramel flavor and it’s amazing with Mexican Coke or any coke. Also real Hawaiian 🌺 rum with coke

Captain Morgan spiced rum and coke is my go too with no shame. Want less sweetness? Try with Diet Coke. Want the same great sweet vanilla taste but with more of a bite? Try 100 proof C.M. If that’s not enough drink your mixie warm. Want to get a buzz without any alcohol bite? Try CM silver. Don’t forget the other flavored options are great with clear pop also.

From a coke perspective fever tree Madagascan cola is the top choice, then fentemens, the coca cola. I'm going to have to get a bottle of Plantation OD now and then try that with coke

I prefer dark rums for rum and coke. My favorite is Old Sam but also like Screech, London Dock, Lemon Hart, Smugglers Cove, Cruzan, Lambs Navy. Amber rums like Lambs Palm breeze, Old Sam 5yr, and Bacardi Gold will do. Cheers! Enjoy!

The rum and coke combo that I prefer is Don Q Cristal and Pepsi. El Dorado 12yr makes a good one as well. The last actual rum and coke I had was at a Christmas party last year and they used Bacardi silver. Unfortunately the "bartender" never used her tools and poured about 3oz of rum to about 2oz of coke. Just not good! LOL

Honestly. I don’t know. It’s not a big thing in the UK. You can get it online, but never really off the shelf. So I haven’t really played with it. From memory back in the day though, it was just Bacardi Carta Blanca before Chill Filtering. Same Rum essentially. Just slightly different taste cos of the filtering. Not 100% sure cos that knowledge is dating back to mid 2000s.

For me an everyday rum and coke is Havana or dmf spiced, coconut or coffee. I do like a skippers and coke but then I will go for a more expensive rum in coke if I want more complex flavours

I feel like I need to revisit the Fever-Tree cola. Although it’s exactly the same stuff as you get in the US, ours is “Madagascan Cola” with more emphasis on the Vanilla part. But it’s 100% the same liquid. Anyway, over here in the UK, it just doesn’t get the love. Mind you it’s been out 6-8 years I think. Maybe longer. Deffo think pre 2018. In fact it’s rarely listed as it’s just a poor drink. So it’s interesting to see the US big it up. But then I think half of that maybe because you always love the Mexican Cola too. But then our Cola is the Mexican Cola. Well, it’s UK. But made from same stuff.

Old Monk isn’t really available here in the UK. I’ve seen Legend, but that’s quite expansive. Not really seen anything in a normal budget range.

Appleton anyone of them from the signature(4 year), the 8, or even the 12. I mainly go with the 8 as I can get it for 26 dollars us and the 4 year is like 22 but the 12 is usually 40+ so the 8 is the best for the price for me
