Usually seen supporting the likes of Under Suzukis Scorch Racing team, this World Time Attack Andrew Handmer of SX Developments was invited to take his own Nissan 180SX to the track instead which saw him net a top 5 finish in the Pro-Am Class.
Originally destined to be a more tame build based off an old daily driver, things quickly escalated to the aero equipped 480hp (360 kW) at around 26 psi 1.8 bar) build here. The 180SX is powered by a Nissan SR20 with Wiseco pistons, Eagle rods, upgraded cams and valve-train with a Kinugawa TD06 SL220G billet wheel fitted turbo delivering the boost. A dry sump setup has been pieced together with some consideration going into the pump rather than just sending it with the first budget option that came along.
The transmission is a NASCAR Jerico Performance Products unit that has been converted to sequential shift with a relatively stock driveline putting power to the ground.
Electronics wise a Haltech Elite 2500 is paired with a MoTeC ADL3 logger/dash and a solid CAN configuration options for both the Haltech and MoTeC units allow Andrew to simplify his wiring and controls where possible including some sensors to help him with his own driving development like steering angle, brake pressure, damper potentiometers (shock pots) and accelerometers.
The car has been built with a budget in mind that is more relatable to many than of the builds we see on the track (not that there is anything wrong with that either!) and while we're sure there have also been many, many hours poured into this, a $20,000 odd dollar build for a car like this is a solid effort and a testament to Andrews hardwork and skills, including bargain hunting 🤘
FURTURE PLANS: Andrew's hoping to come back again with a pneumatic shifter to help avoid some of those miss shifts, a fix for the boost spike issue which isn't normally an issue at his local track but had a bit more impact here at Sydney. From there with a bit more practice on the circuit and based off the cars data and how that has worked for his local track, he thinks there is a 1:29.00 in the car and it's just up to him to extract it all going well!

thanks guys! I hope to get back out on track soon and go a bit faster :) A couple of other cost saving stories: The wing was literally found in a dumpster, badly damaged from a crashed car. I repaired it, and changed the geometry after some leaf blower wind tunnel testing. The wing mounts, splitter brackets, and most of the sheet metal parts in the car were made using a free CNC router rescued from scrap and repaired, and a CNC plasma cutter made mostly from more rescued broken machinery.

I've built cars, trust me im already 20k in a car, and in reality the time+parts= far more than 20k. At this point I don't think you actually built a car.

Most of the money spent on these cars comes from iterating and developing. I was in the 20k range with my own build 4 years ago but ended up spending 4x more over the years to develop and eventually "finish" the car. And sometimes there are people out there spending 3x more than you but are going slower!

definitely. This one was more like $15k when it ran its fastest lap at Wakefield Park ~18 months ago and has only gone (slightly) slower since! (conditions, breakdowns, tyres, etc) It's still the fastest S chassis there, but I really want to go faster!

That's awesome and a great credit to the owner. One thing not touched on was the suspension. Looking at the in-car, it is obviously well sorted and balanced. There's very little steering input required once he commits to the turn and not needing to 'chase' the car all through the corners 👌

that might be due to going too slow! The suspension is mostly pretty basic. Factory knuckles all round, factory subframes, and still a few factory arms. Coilovers are BC ER series which came with the rolling shell. I changed the spring rates and did some damper adjustment but nothing much. I haven't touched the settings for ages because one of them started leaking at the adjuster knob whenever I touch it! Swaybars are custom (DIY) and tubular to save weight. The front one is a go kart axle and uses go kart hubs to adapt to the blades. One sort of fancy thing about it is that it has 3rd springs. The rear one is part of the swaybar setup, and the front one is a combination strut brace and torsion bar actuated by push rods from the lower control arms. I was hoping it would be the first time attack car with 3rd springs but between designing it and actually drivingt it, Andy Forrest built, competed in, and sold his car! Currently the front 3rd spring doesn't do much, but the rear one definitely helps support the aero load since the rear springs are much softer than the front due to the car's front heavy balance.

@@Danger_mouse haha yes, I always try to make use of the good parts of the factory design! Basically as long as you don't run the ride height too low it works pretty well - and that also helps with aero options since you have plenty of space underneath.

He did well eh! He's got a plan in place to fix the shifting issue and I think he said he might consider different gear ratios as they really don't suit this track like they do his local, but at the same time, he put down a hell of a time as it is for his first time out here. If Under Suzuki makes it back next year he might struggle to make the call between working or racing now I think. Great problem to have 😅 - Taz.

I strongly disbelieve that this is a 20K build. Dry sump, carbon bonnet,boot and doors, forged engine and supporting mods the budget was blown a long time ago.

just checked the spreadsheet, which covers all the major stuff but probably misses a lot of small things, and it's just over $18k, or $20500 including the WTAC safety upgrades (fire system, new seat, etc) It would be hard to replicate the car for the same cost in a short time, but a lot of the parts were collected over the past 10+ years, and the car was built over about 5 years using a lot of leftover stuff lying around, and bargains as they were found. The rolling shell with carbon doors, hatch, etc was bought for under $4k Bonnet is fibreglass and pretty terrible, swapped from a friend years ago for some other junk I think. I then added the vent which is fabricated from aluminium. The basic engine was built 8 years ago for my road car, for a total cost of about $1500 using parts bought cheap second hand. The main cost was the machining. Dry sump was originally done ultra cheap and then had a few upgrades, new hoses etc. I made my own drive setup using a $300 Powerbond crank pulley rather than the usual $800+ ATI one. Brackets etc all DIY. Gearbox was adapted using a $20 auto bellhousing and a simple DIY plate. Clutch is a second hand Indy car 5.5" triple plate that cost $250, on a modified Quartermaster flywheel which was $200. The tailshaft was one of the more expensive parts, at about $550, but I saved some cost on that with ebay / amazon USA uni joints, yokes, etc. Brakes on the car are R34 GT-T which cost something like $200, and the Wilwood pedal box was $250 many years ago. The front rotors are some 2 piece ones I picked up damaged for free and machined them, now replaced with the same type I found on ebay for $300 as NOS.

@@SXDevelopments I got my type X for free basically and it’s not even turbo. I’ve done 98% the work myself and it’s sitting at $45,000 and doesn’t include any time I’ve spent working on it. Maybe the total was 20K but I can see a lot of work in that, lots of stuff you can’t see costs things. You can’t tell me the seats,harnesses, tires and wheels you got for a deal as well. What about the wiring loom turbo, manifold, gate and exhaust, brake pads and oils.

@@AdamNZ There's definitely been a lot of time spent on it! I got the original seat for free 20 years ago, harness was around $200 new. Wheels were $1550 new a few years before I started this project. Tyres have mostly been free leftovers from Under Suzuki at previous events, but this time I had one new set paid for by a GoFundMe a friend set up to help out! Wiring loom was about $500 total for parts, and I did all the work myself. There's no fancy tefzel wire or DR25 heatshrink on it. I scavenged a few mil spec connectors from old military gear for some of it. Manifold was built by me, total cost around $350 I think - mostly the Hypertune collector. Wastegate was an Under Suzuki hand-me-down, and the exhaust cost about $250 in titanium pipe, plus maybe $100 of stainless bits. Brake pads started off as a second hand set, but have since been replaced, at about $200 an end (Project Mu HC800+) For oil I used to buy Penrite HPR30 on special for $30 a bottle, but have since been helped out with Amsoil products free or cheap.

@@SXDevelopments I’m not going to gaslight you. I’ve built enough of these and know what things costs and by the sounds you are extremely lucky but it’s just my opinion. I’ve known about all of the ex nascar parts that become available every now and then but usually takes a bit of tinkering to make things fit and without all the right tools and knowledge ends up being expensive or too hard. I’m thinking about designing a dry sump system myself and many other parts for these being a designer. It also sounds like you’re very handy and multi talented ect being able to do all things you’ve done. I’m very interested in hearing your back story especially with Under Suzuki handing off old parts. I might even meet you in the pits once I’ve finished my build in the next year or so.

Awesome build and does genuinely seem like it's a relatively budget based setup but to call it an actual $20k budget build is relatively disingenuous. It's like saying you have a budget watch collection when you own a watch shop. A budget build implies that it's attainable for that price or close to it for the average Joe working in his home garage...this guy is obviously a professional with loads of contacts, experience, and access to equipment and expertise that is collectively worth millions. I work in the aftermarket performance world...I am currently working on a BRZ Time Trials project. I have about $20k into it....but for a random dude who doesn't have the connections I have in the industry, it would be closer to $40k. So for me to say it's a $20k build so far is not accurate.

you'd be surprised :) A lot of parts were bought back when they were cheap, and there were a bunch of leftover parts that were worth basically nothing at the time. I certainly couldn't replicate it for the same price now, but $20k was a conservative estimate based on a spreadsheet with everything I could think of in it (around $18k). I do have a few useful contacts and helpful friends, but most of the equipment used to build the car was repaired scrap gear (CNC router, plasma cutter, mill etc) or bought very cheap (lathe) I also got quite a few parts, tyres, etc by being in the right place at the right time helping out other teams and people over many years.

@@SXDevelopments Oh, thx for your answer. How often does a misshift occur (like in 16:11) and what does it depend on? Just need some real use data for understanding, bcoz i've made in past mechanical seq shifters and came to the conclusion that mechanical shifters have a lot of problems associated with the transmission itself...

@@AlexKarax I had only had the occasional misshift over the last couple of years at Wakefield, but had never run this car at Sydney Motorsport Park before the test day the week before WTAC. The gearbox had been out to replace the shift lever shaft seals, so the linkage adjustments might have been a bit off, but on the test day I had a lot of misshifts. It was improved a lot by playing with the adjustments, but I still had a few misshifts at WTAC. I think there are times when maybe the dogs bounce on a shift and the shifter ratchet ends up between positions and it's hard to get it back in the right spot. I think early on it tended to over travel, so shifting again would end up in 4th instead of 3rd. Sometimes I've had it not make it to 3rd but get there on the next try. I'm in the process of building a pneumatic shifter for it, which is tricky since the gearbox has two shift fork inputs which both need 3 solid positions - but it's easier than doing it on a normal H pattern input. While measuring up for the pneumatics I noticed that the shift fork travel is not identical for each gear, which might be part of the issue with the Renagate shifter. If you get it adjusted right for one gear it's probably not quite right on another. I'm hoping the pneumatic setup with proper ECU controlled flat shift should help, but I have also rebuilt the original H pattern shifter which I will set up as a backup plan.

@@SXDevelopments I've work on my shifters with same issues with 2nd-3rd shift and overtravel, unequal lever travel and i had same conclusion - it's easier to make pneumatic system. Thnx, now i understand that not i'm absolutely stupid in my battle with shift problems but it's also some basic concept problems)

Ideally I'd replace the top cover of the gearbox and do a direct acting drum shifter, but it's hard to machine the parts! I'm still not sure if the 1986 Jerico's design would like being shifted much faster, so it could be a lot of work for not much gain.

Is there an error with the power? I can’t imagine a td06sl2-20g making 350kw at the wheels. It’s a 52mm inlet size. I have experience with this turbo on a 4g63 on pump gas. Or does e85/race gas make that much of a difference? I’ve been making around 350whp on a mainline dyno.

it's the billet wheel version with an external gate T3 housing, and it's really running at max flow anywhere above 5000rpm. E85 definitely helps get a bit more power out of it too. 360rwkw was on a Dyno Dynamics roller dyno, and prior to the cam upgrade it had made 345kw on a Mainline.

I made 300kw on an sr20 with the td06 sl2 20g, was only on around 17psi on a dynapac hub dyno. That was internal gate, with a little creep up top, and stock cast exhaust manifold. Cant see why 360kw wouldnt be possible with more boost. Also would be a slight gain from being dry sump.

it's definitely a bit more expensive these days for the engine stuff. I'm seeing broken SR20s for sale for $3000 now, whereas this one was built for about $1500 total using second hand parts and damaged donor engines.
