This 40K Mile 1988 Buick Regal GM10 Car Was a $7 Billion Dud From GM - Review and Test Drive By Bill

Curious Cars

3 жыл бұрын

The GM10 Platform from General Motors had high aspirations - very high. They originally planned to have 7 factories producing the cars, and expected to corner more than 20% of the Domestic new car market, or 500,000 or so of each brand made on the platform.
This didn't happen. GM's enormous bureaucracy and inability to move quickly struck again. The cars came on the market two years later than expected, and utterly failed to wow the public. Contrast that to the Ford release of the Taurus/Sable two years prior, greeted with rave reviews and high sales figures.
The platform, though mismanaged, was not a bad one. The cars were of a fairly high quality, and many remained on the used car market for decades, quite a few even today. The final GM10 derivative, badged as an Impala, was sold in 2015. Not too terrible in terms of longevity, but far from the success GM imagined its 7 billion dollar investment would deliver.
Full review and test drive by Bill - Curious Cars and Autohaus of Naples. Vehicle is for sale at www.AutohausFL.com, or at (239) 263-8500.

Nope. GM mgmt was brilliant. The problem was the company was too big and the thing called synergy. In order to become more profitable the bought theor own subsidiaries. Thing is as technologically increased they had to.implement new products from.their subsidiaries into their product line up. This caused delays. Another was top heavy mgmt where too many department heads had to.sign off on the development stage to move to the next level. This too caused delays.

@@broncomcbane6382 Brilliant? You are talking about a company that canned Pontiac (their sports brand) but thought performance influenced models like the SSR and HHR would compete well in a market which didn't exist, and nobody asked for. Also the company that pushed the "cheaper Chevrolet" in Saturn, while also rebadging some of those models as Chevrolets, and introducing a EV car program, then pulling the rug from under it almost immediately, whilist telling consumers no you are wrong, you don't want to buy this. GM management is pitiful. Their mindset is like a combination of a prepubescent and a menstrating woman with a personality disorder coalesced in the middle of an episodic outburst.

I used to work four Saturn corporation. The GM folks used to bitch that the $2B GM spent starting Saturn was a total waste that should have gone to more models for GM divisions. I pointed out that the company spent 3x that amount on the GM10 platform, alone, and didn’t get a new brand, a new factory, a new dealer network, and cars that sold mostly to people who were completely incremental to their current base of buyers (85% or so didn’t even consider another GM brand). They usually just shuffled away at that point.

What was neat about the GM 10 cars was that four wheel disc brakes were standard. At that time, four wheel disc brakes were rare on a mainstream mid size car at that time. Rear discs were usually available only on sporty versions of mainstream mid size cars at the time. On today's cars, rear drums are getting more rare and could only be seen on entry level subcompact cars.

I was just about to post that comment. Barely any mainstream cars had an airbag in '88, not sure why he felt this one should've. The '88 Dodge Diplomat and Chrysler 5th Avenues were kind of Guinea Pigs for that technology, and definitely anomalies at the time aside from the '89 Lincoln Continental which was the 1st Ford to offer dual airbags, and the Ford Tempo which offered an optional driver's air bag from the mid-80's until the end of it's production in '94.
@pdennis93
@pdennis93 3 жыл бұрын
@@Stressless2023 1990 was when the driver's side passive restraint was mandated. GM half assed it with the door mounted belts in cars with a full door frame and only added driver side airbags to cars with no upper door frame like Camaro, Firebird, and Corvette. Iirc 1994 was when passenger passive restraints were mandated. I know this because a friend had a 1994 Plymouth Sundance. It had one of the weirdest setups because they added a motorized belt for the passenger side. The driver's side had an airbag and manual belt but they didn't want to redesign the dash for a passenger airbag since the Plymouth breeze was coming out in 1995 to replace the Sundance so they just slapped the passive belt on that side for a single year.
@Stressless2023
@Stressless2023 3 жыл бұрын
@@pdennis93 Yes it was 1994. The Sundance was replaced by the Neon for '95, the Breeze replaced the Acclaim in '96. Never knew that about the '94 Sundance/Shadow though, I actually owned a '93 in college. I can believe that about the half-assed remark towards GM at the time, they were one of the last automakers to adopt air bags throughout their lines, while Chrysler offered a standard airbag in virtually every passenger car they built in 1990 outside of vans and trucks, and Ford wasn't far behind.

@@Stressless2023 ah yeah I meant the neon. And yeah, I owned a 1993 Thunderbird SC. I believe it was one of the last Ford cars without airbags. Maybe the 1994 Tempo/Topaz were the last as they were replaced by the Contour/Mystique in 95. I vaguely remember a friend having a 95 Escort without them as well. I can't believe GM was allowed to put the seatbelts on the doors. That seems like a recipe for disaster if one of the doors opens in a collision.

@@Stressless2023 I believe there was an Airbag factory that blew up causing GM to fall behind with airbags in their vehicles. I still have a 94 Probe GT the first with dual airbags standard. They changed the dash for 93 then had to change it again for 94 to add the second airbag. Thunderbird SC's were cool, got to be the 5 speed. I still want to know how fast those things were. Bill, thank you for the memory lane tour. I am almost embarrassed to admit that I owned a 4 door version of this platform for about 3 years. For the day, it was ok at best. Few things went wrong every now and then, but the parts were available, reasonably priced and a weekend DIY at home got it back on the road. Not a bad daily driver for a highway commute.

I love this video. My first car was a 1992 Regal Custom with the 3800 V6. It was Custom, but with almost all of the GS trim pieces, wheels, bucket seats, full console, console shifter and digital dash. My grandfather bought it new and, when he passed away in 1997, the car came to me a few months later. I only kept it for a couple years before selling it in 1999. Would be cool to have it back again. Mine was silver with black and red trim. In hindsight, it was a nice looking car. It was affectionately known as “the Silver Bullet”. We loaded it up with a bunch of kids. I may or may not be able to confirm that a bottle of ABC vodka and a bottle Meyers rum fit behind that carpet panel in the trunk on the right side.

1974-1976, the ACRS, 1973's were prototype Chevrolets, but the actual ACRS option was only available on Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac full size closed cars, no convertibles or wagons. It was a dual airbag set up, it was pricey and you lost the tilt and telescoping steering wheel option.

Bill, my hunch is that the JOHNNY cassette tape, you found in the Regal, is one either by "CHANCES ARE" artist JOHNNY MATHIS, or "FOLSOM PRISON" artist JOHNNY CASH. My grandmother's last car was a 1984, X Platform, Buick Skylark Custom 4dr Sdn. It was a nice little car, peppy, equipped with the optional V/6 engine, A/T, P/S, P/B, & A/C. These were so common, but haven't seen one in years. GM's tides turned quickly with the wholesale conversion from RWD to FWD. Some the challanges were external, like the one-two punch of emissions requirements and fuel economy standards / gas prices (not to mention safety regulations), but added to that recipe for decline was GM management ceding so much power to accounting that the quality and durability of its products became abyssmal. The last great GM cars (apart from the random Solstice, or maybe Fiero, Aurora) were the A, B, and C body cars. The B bodies were my favorite, although they were already becoming archaic in 1980 despite the attractive facelift.

This would've been perfect for introducing the 3800 in, which came out the same year. Also, the Quad-4 would've been a cool base engine as well, how I would've done it is have the base trim use the Quad-4 as the standard engine option, and then the top-level trim would've had the 3800 as an option.

Embezzlement is a crime. What happened is huge amounts of money was just wasted, because that's what GM does. Probably wasted it on marketing instead of you know, spending it on the actual development of the car. It should have had airbags and antilock brakes, but maybe the antilock brakes were still a year or two off.. I think those were early '90s. But still, that confusing and just plain weird dashboard.. Strange for the sake of being strange.. Like those beer tap door handles built into the B pillars. ACRES of wood contact paper, and a confusing array of non-intuitive tiny buttons to make the ventilation and audio system function.
