Watch the video to find out! This fan is a marvel of Japanese engineering and manufacture, and it's used in the IT industry for cooling network switches. Have you ever wondered what a fan like this is capable of? Well the spec sheet says 400CFM of airflow and over 2,400 Pascals of static pressure at full speed, so it's clearly not playing around. I had to modify my power supply just so I could run it at full speed!

That is an impressively powerful fan! You are a very brave soul holding that by hand. I would not want my hand anywhere near that. There is a WHOLE LOT of kinetic energy in that at 15,000 RPM.

My favourite insane fan is the San Ace 9GV2048P0G201, there is also still a video online showcasing it's modesty :D The fan in this video is definitely no slouch either, it definitely would've overwhelmed the poor small 4-pin connector as that system is usually only rated for 4 amps

I have a 120mm Nidec BETAV V34809-35 that's rated ~3.3a, has a 4-pin pwm conector, and it's my current cpu fan. Do you have any idea if a motherboard 4-pin header can even supply that many amps safely? I've never seen this fan reach 100% duty, only "heard" it once I connected it straight to psu (well, heard more rpm, but couldn't tell if it was 100% or not...). I always been concerned about it frying my board's cpu_fan header. I also have a 120mm Delta AFB1212she rated 1.6a acting as exhaust fan (no intake fans). You think this setup is optimal? Am I pushing the cpu_fan and cha1_fan headers too far? It's impressive how little this is documented online. I love your channel, you inspired me on getting these haha, just need to know the best way to set them up now! My system runs an overclocked i7 too running at 4.2ghz, like that one video of yours! I have a(double stacked) fan rated at 12v 9.5a but it only draw 4.5a when i connected the pwm wire to v+ which is 100% pwm or does these fan really need a controller to do full speed or maybe i just get scammed because the fan only cost $5

The current on the label doesn't always tell you the actual operating current of the motor - sometimes it's a "safety" current, so it will tell you the max inrush value.

Nah it's the real deal, just a slightly older 54-volt model that has a fake sticker to make it look like a newer 48-volt model. I got it really cheap on Alibaba and this sort of practice is pretty common on the grey market. Through official channels this fan costs $200; I paid about $25. :)

Was there any sensation of thrust you could feel when holding the fan?
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 6 ай бұрын
Not really, because I was pushing it down into the mat. The actual thrust is relatively weak, due to the design of the impeller, but in terms of static pressure the number is enormous.

How do you drive this? Are you sending something like a square wave? What's the duty cycle?
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 4 ай бұрын
Yep - that's exactly what it is. There's a separate control wire that feeds a 5V square wave directly to the integrated speed control device in the fan. These Nidec fans take a 500-5KHz square wave.

I'm having a hard time understanding the purpose of this fan. I have a chicken coop ventilation fan that takes 40 watts and delivers 400cfm. I also have several full length, 2U rackmount servers that sound like jet engines. I also used to maintain Cisco network switch cabinets providing networking to several hundred offices and this fan seems both like overkill in the power department and underwhelming in the performance department. Is it just really old?
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 6 ай бұрын
The purpose of this fan (and others like it) is to produce high volume flow at very high pressure, which standard axial fans cannot do - your coop fan will produce 400cfm in free air, but will choke in a high pressure environment. This fan is able to produce 280CFM while working against an air pressure of 1300Pa, which is just bonkers for an axial fan... but it's what is required when cooling a large and densely packed router chassis. it's a highly specialised application and these fans are pretty much tailor made for it, so you won't find them anywhere else. :)
@htomerif
@htomerif 6 ай бұрын
@@FanPhys Well I mean its interesting. I'm gonna guess the real price tag there is the MTBF. Its just a bit weird to me to be dumping 400 watts of heat into something to cool it.

Why did the frame get warm?
@or2kr
@or2kr 6 ай бұрын
Fans might have metal frames for sturdiness or resilience against time/elements, but in this case it is most definitely there as a heatsink to cool the motor to ensure longer bearing life
@chippers34
@chippers34 6 ай бұрын
I think it's caused by air friction
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 6 ай бұрын
It's because of the high current flowing through the stator coils. After operating the fan at full speed, the motor hub was hot to the touch. The holes at the front of the impeller are to assist in the cooling of the coils. :)

You hit diminishing returns fast with such small blades. If you needed higher air throughout you would use a bigger fan at lower speeds.
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 6 ай бұрын
For airflow definitely, but the main design of these fans is to develop as much pressure as possible in a tight space. It's no slouch with about 400CFM at max speed, but the pressure it can achieve is crazy.

Next time please use an intake grill/guard...just watching made me sweating... By the other hand i don't know how you could resist overvolting it, i surely had streached at least until 60V 😁😈🌪
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 6 ай бұрын
You make a fair point - I will be using guards on these fans from now on :) Also, overvolting won't change the speed because of the fan's "intelligent" design. It has an onboard microcontroller that very precisely regulates the speed of the motor.
@tiagoferreira086
@tiagoferreira086 6 ай бұрын
@@FanPhys About overvolting you are right and at same time wrong, the manufacturer usually gives bout 10 or 15% margin until it starts to limit the rpm, i have some server fans which i had played and indeed they limit the rpm, but i.e. some 12v fan will still increase it's speed until 14v or 15v. Nevertheless i always try to increase volt by volt until it stops screaming louder and louder eheh 😋. Keep bringing these lovely and dangerous fans to the channel 👍
