John Sichi, an American father, is on a mission to find his children who were abducted by his Korean spouse in an international abduction case. He holds treadmill protests multiple times a week, calling for the Korean authorities to enforce court orders for the return of his children to the U.S. We met up with him to listen to his story.

She can hide them as much as she wants but when they become an adult, they will ask her real questions and they will find out from other sources and they will hold resentment towards her for keeping them away from their dad who went to lengths to bring them home. She still has time to realise this mistake that she’s robbing her children of the love of a father that many children aren’t fortunate enough to get. I hope John gets to be with his children.

Not necessarily. Plenty of toxic mothers in the Western/European world poison their children's minds against their fathers out of pure malice, even to the point of claiming that the fasters molested the children. Some children do group up to search for their fathers and find out the truth, but it's rare.

To all the people saying "she must've had a good reason". Yeah no, the supreme court would never decide in favor of a father for a custody case unless the mother screwed up immensely. If there was even a shadow of a suspicion that he did something wrong, they would've thrown the case out.

Actually when you look at the data for the US then it shows that rich dads and the ones that actually put in the effort are actually more likely to get custody over their kids over the mother. So it’s not like dads THAT ACTUALLY WANT CUSTODY never get it unless the mom is abusive.

As a parent, from India, who experienced something similar, I completely understand the heartbreak and frustration he is going through. I wasn’t allowed to communicate with my daughter for about 6 months, when her father took her for a ‘school term break’ to his city, while we were in the middle of a separation. I had to literally get a court order to be able to speak to her and the intermediate time was very difficult. When I met her after 9 months, I was so scared that she, at 5yrs, would have forgotten about me as her mother. It was quite a few years back, but this is something that I pray no parent has to ever go thru. I don’t know what is the reason behind the split between the parents, but I sincerely hope that he is able to reconnect with his children.

“Parents” who abducted typically do this out of revenge against the other parent. Sometimes the revenge is misplaced as in form of transference against the parent. My understanding is that when the police try to enforce, they have to ask the kids themselves. If the child is very small, they do not understand the gravity of their decision. The child can also be intimidated, frightened or coerced into answering in favor of the currently available parent. Think about this: how easy can it be to convince a child to say something if they know they'll be awarded something they really want (e.g. sweet food, candy, a toy they want, etc.)? Or likewise, severe punishment if they don't say something correctly? This is why leaving the last decision up to young children is flawed.

I am a foreigner who lives in Germany and haved witnessed similar case where the mother or father haved abducted their children to another country. In most case it boiled dount to cultural differences and home sickness. I have seen women who just up and leave their children in Germany because they couldn't connect and thought it best because of opportunities available for them. It not necessarily that the Man has done something wrong but the expectations of the wife were not met. I Korea there is by most the mindset that you must be constantly in contact with your partner, they celebrate every few weeks " Anniversary " and the wife is given control ( not in all case ) of the finances and this is a few things that varies from the Western marriages. Regardless of what went wrong in their marriage unless it's abusive, it is cruel to keep the children away and in no contact with the father. God forbid they become sick and is in need of some help that can only come from family.

Absolutely no words. Throughout the interview, I can just hear the pain in his voice, and just the amount of mental, physical, and financial burden it must put on him to suffer like this every day. John should not have been able to suffer in this way, he should be happy with his children and doing everything he can to make them happy. But now, all he can do is this, and that's a brave and courageous soul that I can appreciate. I'm also appreciative that he is very respectful to not bother his former wife and is very peaceful to not fuel more fire into this conflict. As someone who has studied criminology and the criminal justice system, I can clearly say that Korea's criminal justice system is a joke and is extremely flawed in every single way. I mean people who are meant to serve the people and keep them safe can't even do their jobs properly, and not let John see his children. Plus lawmakers don't even do their job properly. It's just a way to ensure that a certain standard and reputation is kept, and that's what frustrates me. Plus I can't imagine what the children are thinking about, and what they must be going through not being able to see their father, because they will one day question the mother about this entire situation. The fact that the mother getting away with such an illegal crime is devastating and it angers me. John, I really do give my prayers to you and the rest of your family that this situation will be resolved soon, and that you can see your children once again.
