Jonathan really did have a lot of feelings today. Bless him for being so moved about Liza's redemption skate! The little girl inside her is alive once again!! And I appreciate Nathan's flex in winning with a layout that is easy for him, but that guys can't even do, and then adding in a 4S because he can. All while the other guys were going wild with their layouts and having jump measuring contests in the gala practice, which he skipped. The best.

Honestly, I think Zagitova started the season exhausted. She looked like she was so stressed and tense and miserable the entire season. I wouldn't be surprised if she was in a lot of pain all season, she looked like she was hurt on many occasions. That poor girl needs to rest and be left alone so she can decide if she even wants to skate anymore.

I just don't think he will. He seems attached to Tammy if nothing else and moving to Japan is a bit much. Training during the summer and when she's in the states tho is doable. But I wonder how the Japanese fed feels about her training someone who beats their national champion. And it's not just training, but sitting in the K&C with him. Sure, skaters will come the US for quad training but it ends there.

Jonathan Beyer yes! It’s not a big deal where you finish at WTT anyway so use it to make history! Use the competition format and test new stuff! Shoma is my favorite male skater now and I love how he never settles, he just continues to challenge himself, I just wish he would be smarter with his layouts in competitions, he needs to find a balance between doing everything he wants to do and something that works competitively. I really wish he finds his consistency because my gosh this boy is beautiful to watch!

@ionlyelec4467

Shoma has some kinda mental block preventing him from reaching his full potential. He said it himself, like he said he resorts to trying hard and skating aggressively to avoid having to be perfect, be at the top, win and be a champion, because if you take an aggressive approach, then you can say you did your best, and you can justify losing. You guys clearly don’t speak Japanese, so it might be hard to grasp but Shoma really does have such a submissive, humble personality, compared to someone like Yuzuru who is always so hungry, confident and some even describe him as being “narcissistic” and “full of himself”, even Kanako Murakami said that about him lol But anyway, Shoma likes to stick to what he’s used to, wheres someone like Yuzuru never gets satisfied no matter what, Shoma likes being comfortable and that’s his biggest problem. He said he’ll always be with Machiko and Mihoko no matter what, and that he only wants to skate to programs Mihoko choreograph, til the end of his career. He’s so used to looking up to Yuzuru and being a bridesmaid that he doesn’t believe he can be the best male figure skater. He has everything it takes, he just has to believe in himself.

I’m sure Nathan is well aware that he was carrying the majority of the load for this US team. And I’m sure he’s grateful for his Olympic teammates who carried the load last year and skated well after he underperformed. That entire team was vital in winning that Olympic medal. And I too would have sent Liza to Worlds over Sofia.

Natalie Marvos he underperformed, but he still placed 4th there. He did his job. Adam still only placed 3rd and Scimeca/Knierim places 4th in their clean skates.
@a9029k
@a9029k 5 жыл бұрын
Davin Yu yes but the Knierims and the Shibs both had to do 2 programs and Mirai, Adam and Bradie were all clean. So it’s also true that he’s been on the other side of things where others carried the load. But given how well Vincent did and the margin between the US and Japan at WTT, we would’ve won gold even if Nathan had been behind Shoma in both the short and the long. Actually he could’ve finished behind both Japanese men and we still would’ve won. The US has a really balanced team.
@nataliemarvos4623
@nataliemarvos4623 5 жыл бұрын
That’s just looking at the placements. I look at who the skaters placed ahead of. Nathan had a very off SP and finished a few spots below where he could have. Then the Knierims skated and placed ahead of James/Cipres, Yu/Zhang, and the Italians, which gave the US 3 extra points that weren’t really expected. And the strong US skates continued from there. So my point was that Nathan has been on the other sides of things where he wasn’t getting 1st place and needed his teammates to help lift him. Sure the US could have won WTT this year without him, but that was mostly in part because Russia was missing several key skaters and their men finished way down in the standings. He’s still the main reason why this year’s team won.

Thank you for the prompt recap! Mie Hamada mentioned to the press that she got so many varieties of duct tape for Rika and the one that worked was the one used for water pipes, thus in grey’ish in color. The boot issue Is getting so much press coverage in Japan. Rika mentioned it herself a couple of times and now media asks her each time! She said her goal next season is to find boots that last. I hope her boot issue doesn’t turn out to be like Karen Chen’s.

Oh, I would really like your opinion on the two top Russian teams against each other. For my money I think Stepanova/Bukin are far and away the more interesting and engaging team but I don't feel they skate to their potential. I think if they had a choreographer that really pushed and challenged them they could be amazing. Sinitsina/Katsalapov I feel do great with what they have, and maybe are slightly better technically, but they don't thrill me and I don't feel they have as much room to grow.

Will you two ever do an episode about what music you believe everyone should skate to for the upcoming season (or at some point at all)? I always find your opinions on music and costumes so interesting... On a completely different note, the back seam of my boot popped the night before a show - when I tied my skates you could see my foot through the back. Practically half a roll of duct tape held it together and I certainly agree with Dave: there is nothing more frightening than a lutz in a dead boot 😉

While it's true that Nathan and Vincent carried this US team to the victory practically by themselves, that hasn't always been the case in these team events. Nathan had a hard time at the Olympic Team Event and didn't do as well as expected, and it was Alexa & Chris who skated really well after him and placed ahead of Vanessa & Morgan, the Chinese pair, etc. So can we please not act as if US skaters are always just riding Nathan's coattails to a team medal because that certainly isn't always the case. The Olympic team medal in 2018 was truly a collaborative effort and it's not fair to minimize the accomplishments of those skaters, no matter how you feel about team events.

I get what you're saying about skaters winning team medals that weren't up for individual medals. There's something strange about Ashley Cain celebrating wildly on social media about this big win and finishing the year on a high when they didn't do so well in either segment. I knew what you meant about Nathan carrying the team. But then you brought up the Olympic team event, which seemed a bit out of place because it was Nathan who ironically struggled there, and the Knierims in particular kind of bailed him out and took the heat off of him. The Knierims have been important in team events. At that one WTT when the US narrowly won over Russia, it was in large part because Alexa & Chris finished ahead of Kavaguti & Smirnov in the LP. But I get what you were trying to say.

Hi, I don't mean to be disrespectful but referencing Nathan's lower tech content at WTT as being a gateway for more of a PCS-high performance then saying that this will guarantee the "number stays nice and high." I know that this is the sad reality but shouldn't we not be happy about this if each time he performs he doesn't bring that same performance/ interpretation content (as you said, he omitted many nuances at Worlds). I guess I'm naive but I thought that this would be met with less enthusiasm instead of happiness? Don't we want him to grow and not stay stagnant...to earn his marks? I know many people haven't and don't earn "all" their PCS...but they've been criticized in the past. Nathan seems to be an exception. Regardless, thanks for the video and the thoughts.

And the opinion is just that...an opinion. 3) All comments that I have made have context. Context which you have blatantly excluded in your little summations...clever but not really a good look for someone who is trying to appear morally superior here lol. 4) You seem to have a very major issue here if you feel the need to read a twitter page, search for that person on another website then come here once again and comment on it as if the comments in question weren't undeniably subjective in nature. I for one am Glad this particular FD for Hubbell and Donahue wasn't their best. Judges like to see momentum and development and this is the perfect year for them to try something new and a new look and it may not have "worked" necessarily but they are still in the top echelon of Dance Teams and that has not changed in the judges eyes even if some levels have been lowered. They'll come out next season with a program that suits them a bit better and maybe even pull a Chock and Bates and take some time off and then WOW everyone when they come back later next season or something and the judges will see that as "momentum and development" when really they are just going back to a style that they originally won hearts (and points) with, I think there is plenty of "upside" to this team and they will kill it with their next FD! The French were far superior back then too, they've only just extended that and stretched their ability further. V&M will always be "historically remembered" skaters, in fact, they're probably the best since Torvill and Dean. But Papadakis & Cizeron have taken it another step forward. This season, their FD is one that's for the history books, but I also believe that Fear & Gibson's FD (not at WTT) is a FD for the history books. We've been quite blessed with programmes this year that'll be forever remembered as Landmark programmes: Vanessa James & Morgan Cipres's Free Programme Papadakis & Cizeron's Free Dance Fear & Gibson's Free Dance Nathan Chen's Short Programme

I'm kind of terrified that before the next Olympics, the politics of Ice Dance will overwhelm so much that the Russians end up taking over the French for the gold. I hope I'm wrong but with how close the scores were at WTT I'm thinking I might not be, and there's still a few years to shrink the gap even more. There is no world where the gap in PCS between P/C & S/K should be less than 2 points. NO WAY. I'm a huge V&M fan, I take ownership of it, but in all my fandom, I've never once thought the French were not spectacular and gorgeous. They truly are. And they STILL are. I don't see anyone in the same echelon of talent, skating skills, or magic as P/C currently. I think their FD this year is one of my favourite ice dance programs EVER. So it really pains me to see that it's the Russian team that seems to be the one the politics have chosen to bridge the gap.

I hope you are wrong. I hope, that not the politics for having a closer competition will win over fair judging. if a team closes the gap because of its performance it is fine; but there is no team with the needed skills imo. if you get +5 for this forced twizzles like Katsalapov did one starts to think ( very round back and the shoulders so high and isn't one key point to reach +4/5 ease and lightness) But on the other hand 8 points is a huge gap. last year we saw a 0,7 point gap between first and second place. artistic wise I see G/P from Canada being close to the French but unfortunately they do not have the matching technical skills to their artistic freedom and excellence...( and always underscored in the last 3 PCS imho )

And until P/C have the technical iconic prowess of V/M's mahler and Moulin rouge FD's i don't personally think they own the FD especially since how overscored they are in the free, and especially since their skating stays the same, pretty, but formulaic, However I do think they have greatly improved in their RD this season which I personally enjoyed.
