This week, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva upset the Angels of Plushenko and Team Tutberidze by emerging victorious over Alexandra Trusova and Alena Kostornaia at the 2020 Rostelecom Cup. The Russians set a new choreographic "standard" in ice dance and Mikhail Kolyada proved to be the angel boy we may not even deserve. Meanwhile in pairs, Tamara Moskvina is back and better than ever. Plus, in Canada, the videos from Skate Canada are emerging and we need to discuss when fake flesh and cut outs are not okay. We break it all down on another edition of 'This and That'.

I think Anna might have an advantage in that she knows how to get back from extended time off the ice. She broke her leg then her arm which took her off ice for a full year. She not only lost her 4T but also many of her triples. But she took her time to build it back up, and she's had a lot of experiences of bad skates that she can come back from, and from her interviews it sounds like she has a very level head and parents that keep her grounded and motivated.

I think the timing can change a lot. If she loses her quads while also growing, it will be harder and possibly impossible in the short run. Let's hope she is away from the ices for just a couple of weeks and nothing is really lost.

I saw ladies LP live and I’m blown away by how different Kostornaya’s skating is comparing to rest. She FLOATS above the ice. Her speed and ice coverage and smoothness were 3 heads above the rest. It literally went in one breath. Even the dress looks okay from the stands. It adds to the overall lightness and you can’t see the fit issues from afar. 😂 Liza worked the crowd, but it was all a bit heavy and large part of her program was in small circles in the middle of the ice. Ultimately I’m happy for her. It’s not the end of the world for Kostornaya to lose this particular start, but it’s a big deal for Liza to win.

I agree. I think Kostornaia has the ability to turn a performance into magic. This was better than last week at 4th stage of Russian cup, so I am hopeful that we will see consistent improvement. She was my favorite skater last year, and I still np not see anyone who can replace her, although I loved Valieva's short.

Kostornaya has said several times that she really wants to do Edith Piaf but is saving it until she's old enough to deliver a mature preformance, so fully expect to see that next season. Think it will be a good fit.

I was surprisingly entertained by all the Russian skating this week. Kolyada was his inconsistent best - the free was beautiful even with the few errors. Aliona was beautiful even without the 3A. Liza is a perfect example of making the most of what you have to offer and perseverance. Boikova and Kozslovski were classic Moskvina perfection. I also enjoyed watching the lower-tier Russian female skaters. Quite a few of them had a lovely quality...Nugumanova is a enjoyable skater. All and all...a good competition to watch.

I was wondering how Trusova's coaching team let her go out and skate while injured, but then I remembered that Vyacheslav Trusov, her dad, was a boxer who almost punched out several coaches and her main coach is Evgeni Plushenko, who went to the Olympics after 5 surgeries and tried to keep skating at the elite level after 7 surgeries. Her other coach is Dmitrii Mikhailov, who less than two years ago, was an ice dancer having a girl stab her blade into his leg on a daily basis. The poor girl. My heart broke and I hope she will not be hurt too much, mentally and physically.

Pretty sure she'd just leave for another coach like she left Eteri if they didn't let her do all the quads and the 3A even if she can't land it. I think it's apparent you can't blame Eteri for her jump obsession. I know a lot of fans believe Eteri forced her into those programs, but judging by her actions and words it's the opposite. Eteri tried to get her to stop so she left. Her parents also seem kind of weird to give her a dog every time she lands a new jump.

over 18 is not "over the hill" in skating. Liza T. is finally understanding what it means to skate a program and relate to the music, IMO. Great competition for her. Alena Kostornaia is my favorite ... it was interesting that her score would have been as high or higher than Liza's if not for underrotations. Alena will get there; she had a very late start in training this year, with her injury.

What really impressed me is the improvement of Liza 's spins and flexibility. That is really amazing. She said in an interview that she loves figure skating but it's not the only important thing in her life, so maybe that's why she still skates after so much time, she is not obsessed with constantly winning and staying at the top. I think that's one of the reasons female skaters in Russia retire so early: the battle to stay at the top is just too harsh, from many aspects.
@birgitangermair4483
@birgitangermair4483 3 жыл бұрын
I also think that her spins do look a little better this season. She has never been the most flexible of a skater, but this is not her fault - every human body has its own limitations and it would be foolish of her and her coaches to push things to an extend where things become rather unhealthy and dangerous.

I missed Ana C. Cantu whom placed 24th at the 2009 Worlds becoming the FIRST female Mexican skater to qualify for the FS, She has a spin named after her. This was timestamp 17:52 if I am not mistaken, please correct me if I am incorrect. I wanted to put a side note that I wished that skaters went outside the box with music choices. not just the boring overused classical and pop music. There are many many MANY let me repeat composers with incredible music that have not been used from EVERY ERA (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Post-Romantic, Impressionist (France), 20th Century, Atonal, 12-Tone, 21st Century, Digital, Pop, etc...I can go on forever since music is my major and what I will be getting a degree in for Music Performance in May 2021). Last season Rika Kihira part of her FS music was by Hildegard Von Bingen (the first FEMALE composer documented ever). I learned about her (Hildy as we nicknamed her in class) in class (Music History I). We can end this era of drab music choices. In all honesty EMPRESS LIZA and Kolyada stole the show this week, sorry to everyone else, you are all fine. Kostornaia, she is a star but...she needs the 3A back or else she will be 3rd or 4th at nationals (this includes if Anna and Alexandra and Elizaveta have incredible performances with quads and/or 3As). She has the inherent talent and the musicality. Trusova, biting at the heels of Alena, her artistry is improving a lot with Evgeni. Bad performance here at Rostelecom but she has soooo much talent! Anna, did not see her here, I hope that she recovers soon. She has not done the Quad Lutz yet really only the flip we have seen in the Russian Cups and also in the PDF of skaters program content only the 4F was noted. Lots of talent and the only of the Eteri 3 As to be with her. I wish her well! Evgenia, I am so sad to see her not compete again, as Dave mentioned she is becoming like American Skater Ashley Wagner (whom won the 2012 4CC and the silver medal at the 2016 Worlds). She probably would have been 3rd judging by the field. Sofia Samodurova, The SP is growing on me but the free is sooooo bad. The music is dreadful really. I saw some of that fire in the SP here. I think she is great but where she lies in standings for nationals, who knows.

Honestly I was so happy for Liza here. Her jumps were sharp (the 3A in the short was perfection), the triple lutz is a thing of beauty, and yknow what she has made considerable improvements on her steps and spins. Like who thought Liza would have better spins than Kostornaia, but here we are! She's never going to be the fastest/most flexible or graceful skater, but props to her for actively upping her game where she can at her "age". She has the best triple lutz in the biz- why not do a 3lz3T and 3A3T to maximize points or 3A2T 3lz3T 3Lz3T2T? Also she lacks speed and her step sequence is slow and labored. But Aliona left the door open since Liza put 3 3A into her competition over two programs so even with mistakes, Aliona’s snooze fest of a free skate without a 3A and level 2 step sequence blew her shot at gold! SLB did her dirty with that garbage free skate and skate dress! They should take the gala music and dress, which is gorgeous and flattering on her, and doctor it up into a free skate with level 4 steps her skating skills are worthy of and hand me down that Walmart discount generic free skate and Goodwill generic washed out. free skate dress to the queen of cheap and washed out skate costumes...Bradie Pollyanna hair Tennel!

Is anybody going to talk about Trusova’s sleeves? She legit stopped mid program (toward the end) and started fidgeting with her sleeves. I thought she was having a wardrobe malfunction, but I guess it was planned to release the spikes on her arms. So strange. It was like the dress changes the Eteri girls did last season but this was not incorporated into the choreography at all. Or maybe she was just so flustered from the falls that it didn’t play out well.

On Kostornaya's 3A (from her interview aired on Channel 1 before the Rostelecom Cup): "I do about 5 daily and thought I would try one in the FS at the 4th Cup of Russia stage but the coaches went like "and how many can you land cleanly in a row? two at best, so.. you're not there yet". After her SP at the Rostelecom she changed her narrative though, and insisted that clean programs were a priority rather than 'jumping out of one's pants'.

@@feyanormorfol2457 There was "long careers" before that recent explosion of Russian teen skating and it was much more enjoyable to watch when you can actually get invested in a skater and see them progress instead of burning out and retiring severely injured when they turn 18. I love the skating of Kamila, Anya, Sasha, Alina, Yulia etc. but it has become really painful to watch because no matter how promising someone looks, you just know they will be replaced in a season or two by the next junior star

@@kthy31 First of all, you forgot to add "to me" or "IMHO" after "was much more enjoyable". Because to me and other fans post-Sochi Caro was slow, boring and quite forgettable. Second, lack of competition gives rise to "long carees" and loss of quality at the same time. It's important to keep the bar high, like Tukt does, raising her BV with two 3A(and landing them!). It's absolutly correct when judges disregard previous victories and age of skaters. As Irina Viner says - "When you on the podium - you are the queen. But after you come down from it - you are nothing, and you should start over again."

Trusova with Mishin would be perfect, he's a fan of her, he was filming her quads at the last Cup of Russia event, tho i think she is Plushenko's baby (maybe more than Kostornaya) so they'll try to make it work.

You might send flowers to Galina on Sunday evening. Mind 7 hrs time zone difference, Sunday night on US eastern coast will be already Monday early morning in Odessa, Ukraine

50:44 The beginning of the song used a clip from that Will Farrell pair skating comedy movie that the ShibSibs used in their Hip Hop program. Given that the song was by both Kanye and Jay-Z and they used Jay-Z in the free dance, I always thought that it was cut from the beginning.

When you mentioned Daleman's costume I checked and it's atrocious. The 'cropped' concept was unnecessary and uncalled for, but it wasn't only that. It's tacky, and kinda false... it does remind me of my 11 years old costumes from the dollar store...

Entertaining as always, gentlemen. It was truly painful to watch Sasha fall over and over again. Although it's not her vaulting leg, I did notice she had therapeutic tape on her right thigh.(it was barely noticeable under her tights on her hamstrings) She needs a reset and maybe a couple of days off. Shame on anyone who would dare to boo my Alena. My maternal side comes out for all of those kids but Alena holds a special place in my heart. I have every confidence she will pull everything together as long as she can stay healthy and more importantly, she has programs worthy of her. Anna S. has me worried since she is so fragile looking and the possibility she may have COVID is alarming. Sending all the good karma her way! I am unfamiliar with Elizaveta II who placed 3rd but I very much enjoyed her FS. Empress deserves a win, she's a little fire cracker. I missed everyone else except Kolyada and the Tall man. I couldn't get an entire look at either of them because my cat vomited then some chaos ensued. Thank you for making my Sunday complete.

@@TheSkatingLesson I did notice the taped ankle, it also looked as if her hamstring also had KT tape as well. Either way, she was hurting during the program and some of those falls looked brutal. I hope her ankle isn't going to be a problem now.😕

Thank god you mentioned the Elena Ilinykh “sex bomb” disaster. The fiery exchange between Tarasova and Ilinykh was priceless-even if I can’t understand Russian, the tension was real! To be fair, though, I actually thought that conceptually the number was brilliant and Elena’s partner, Vlad, really delivered. But Elena did her usual-her dancing looked sloppy but her energy and effervescence were there. Even though I can’t understand what Tarasova and other judges were saying (Russian speakers please feel free to offer translations?)-my guess is that they were just calling Elena out for this. Tarasova has always been known as a “psychological coach”-and, I think she was “digging in” b/c she knew Elena could do better. Next time, I hope Elena takes a lesson from the “Meryl Davis School of Perfectionism” as I’d love to see her and Vlad continue. ♥️
