This week, the U.S. Figure Skating informed us that Americans led to field in all disciplines at 2020 Skate America (where only skaters who lived in the U.S. were invited). We break it all down :Nathan Chen's costume, Lorrie Parker's judging, Madison Hubbell and Zach Donohue's Hallelujah, Mariah Bell, Bradie Tennell, Karen Chen, Gracie Gold, Amber Glenn and Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier. Then, a special visit from the essence of Evgeni Plushenko regarding the judging of Elizaveta Tuktamysheva and Anna Shcherbakova during the third stage of the Cup of Russia. It is another jam-packed episode of 'This and That,' with plenty of love for Mikhail Kolyada.

Gracie Gold has so many great qualities, Intelligent, clever, funny, witty. I know there must be some unfinished business left with this sport but some things in life are just never solved how one would want them to. I believe her talents and brightness would come out greatly doing trying something else. If she still loves skating at an elite level so be it, but I don’t think this is the way Gracie can truly let us and herself see how truly awesome she is.

After watching her, I agree. Why put oneself through the anguish of competition when it is pretty clear that making another olympic team is out of reach unless she makes some drastic changes to coaching/training/lifestyle. I wonder what advice Kimmie meissner or Rachel Flatt would have - they sort of tried to hang on past their prime, but then they retired, pursued an education and advanced degrees, and both seem successful and happy in their professional lives while contributing to the sport (coaching for KM, advisory groups for RF).

@@TheSkatingLesson I commented on the accent and one other user commented as well. I forget what they said but I said "I don't care like at all (only cause i'm personally not sensitive, others may be) but if these were Indian skaters or Mexican skaters or even asian skaters can you imagine the reaction to the accent. Don't think it would be the same at all" . I'm not sure if you're referring to me or the other user but if you are referring to me I just want to clear it up. I definitely do not think you are racist at all. AT ALL. I actually admire how you immerse yourself in this culture by continuing to learn the language and its one of the reasons why I follow The Skating Lesson. The point that I was trying to make was that it sounded like a double standard. Racism in my eyes is when you actively hate a race and not one percent of me thinks that at all. I specifically added the "I don't care at all" part to seem not aggressive or accusatory. If y'all knew me you would know that I am the furthest thing from a sjw I was just giving my opinion which I still stand by. Once again I apologize if you took it as me claiming you were racist. I want to clear it up for your sake and for my sake I don't want to make anyone feel like they're being accused of something. Sorry if this is badly written I'm not good with words.

I won't say that I love Nathan's new FS program but I do like that he is trying something different. It's exactly what he needs to do, along with working on his SS and interpretation of music. The last thing he should do, IMO, is go back to his Elton John routine. He can use this for the exhibitions. As for his costumes: still not the best but a heck of a lot better than those awful Vera Wang shirts he wore last season.

Knierim and Frazier had an outstanding debut. That was as strong of a debut as you'll see from a new pair, and in some ways they already look better than they ever have. Their throws are huge. Who knew Brandon had such a solid triple toe. Yes, they could add a few moments where they look at each other more, but they look good as a pair. And yes, everyone in skating knows each other. Ashley Cain's own dad is a technical specialist. I don't see it having relevance in the pair event here. I'm pleasantly surprised at how rapidly Alexa and Brandon are progressing. They're already more solid than with other partners. They are very established and strong pair skaters, not newcomers off the street, so they're going to get strong scores for great performances, especially in the U.S. They deserved the leads they had in both portions over the other pairs in the field. If anything, their SP score could have been slightly higher, but they skated first. More credit is necessary for the great work Jenni and Todd are doing balancing two strong pairs. And credit to Knierim and Frazier for doing an outstanding job after a few months of training in a pandemic. I'm also glad the High Performance guy Mitch loves Alexa. He should love the top pair skater in our country. She has the most raw talent, and this new pair needs support and funding.

Yes, Tuktamysheva could/should have been ahead of Shcherbakova after the SP but I still think she was only third best at the end of the competition. Even the crazies posting comments during the live chat stream, who cried foul during the SP and writhed on the floor over the terrible injustice that they had just witnessed, were strangely muted after her FS scores came out. Personally, I found it hard to get upset at her SP scores considering that she was getting level 2s on her step sequence and on at least one of her spins and had an under-rotation on one of her triples. Her 3A was effortless and beautiful though.

Both 3As looked a little under in the slow mo. And that entrance technique is so bizarre. But kudos for landing them both, and she did some great lutzes too. She was close to her best and this was Anna's worst senior competition so far. But Anna starts from a much higher score in the free and gets a million PCS points no matter what. Liza never had a chance, and the skating skills are the same even if her programs are a little better.

@vncntd3962
@vncntd3962 3 жыл бұрын
@@laurabujalance3616 Agree. This was one of the topics discussed during the live stream chat yesterday. Even when the music choices were questionable, there was a heck of a lot more variety in the SP music choices for the women at the Russian Cup than at Skate America where virtually every routine featured some dreary - as Jonathan would put it - "EMO" pop track with female vocals. This variety is not always true in Russia but it was certainly the case for the Ladies SP. While I don't necessarily expect the individual US Ladies to be paying so much attention to what their competitors are skating to, someone on their coaching staff should be as well as the choreographers they are paying $$ for their routines. Watching the SP competition at Skate America was depressingly monotonous music-wise.

I totally agree. Sitting through the Men's and Ladie's short programs at Skate America was brutal. Everyone had the kind of current pop music that you're bored with because you're forced to listen to it in the background while shopping at the grocery store.
@iwilsonjr
@iwilsonjr 3 жыл бұрын
@@B___T985 But to be honest, does this generation of skaters have a great knowledge of music beyond the ballads/recent movies? This is one of those cases where they could talk to someone with a decent music collection that could give some new ideas. The music doesn't have to be shocking/avantgarde but there is a lot of music that works well with conservative tastes (like judges).

I’m really rooting for Amber Glenn to step up, and I don’t think she fully realizes yet what a big step up she could take. She’s so feisty and powerful on social media, Id love to see her ditch the sad emo ballads and skate to some powerful upbeat music. The dresses are also drab as hell, stronger colors and more ornate needed. The US ladies lineup is weak, so a skater like Amber who’s upping her tech content and working hard could make significant moves.

The Cup of Russia has a system of bonus points. I don't know all the detail but I think that it's one point for a good spin (level 4) and two points for a clean quad (maybe, 3A?). I might be wrong about specifics. The bottom line is that good spins and some good jumps are given extra points (what good means remain a mystery). I have not seen the protocols for Anna and Lisa. But those bonuses probably explain some of the differences between their scores in the short... though it does not help me to swallow this outcome.

However, picking from their weakest album AND using the only good song in the last 20 seconds doesn't help. They've written many, MANY really good songs that are great for skating, like there is an Exogenisis 1 & 2, but this isn't their good stuff, even to them. Alexa and Brandon's debut was so impressive and strong and a real highlight of the event. She's one of the best pair skaters in the world and I knew she could find quick success with a new partner. They need more time together but already have a lot of potential on a world level. She deserves more credit and more discussion of her spectacular throw triple loop and the way they successfully merged two different techniques so quickly, rather than talk about how she's friendly with Lorrie Parker, like many skaters are. The pairs world is small and everyone is friendly with everyone, including the other judge you mentioned, Troy. In fact Troy was the technical specialist at 2019 Worlds when Ashley Cain's very underrotated triple salchow wasn't called under, for the first time that season. So I'm not sure about the insinuation that the judges are out to get them. You could make a case that Cain/LeDuc could have been 3rd here over Lu/Mitrofanov who don't have strong pair elements either, and perhaps question why they finished so far behind Calalang/Johnson who missed every jump and had subpar throws. C/J of course have a better twist and lifts than C/L. But Alexa's lead over those teams was very well deserved. We all know GP events have domestic judging panels this season, so the scores might skew higher, in every country. And we know that PCS go up when your TES does. But Alexa and Brandon have world class elements and will be getting scores like that everywhere if they continue on this pace.

@lawomann I'm not sure if it's Brian, Jessica, or Jeni/Todd. Jessica had "small" throws with her old partner too. Brian threw "small" with his old partner Chelsea too (although not quite as small as with Jessica), and Jeni and Todd if you go back and watch their youtube videos had throws that had little distance as well. So I'm not sure if Brian and Jessica have just been taught this technique or if it will get better the longer the team is together.

I might have to respectfully disagree about C/LD vs. C/J. I think there was a clear better quality to C/J in spite of the missed jumps. I don't agree that C/LD are being "harshly" judged all of a sudden. I think they might have had less training time due to his injury. They don't have the precision they once had in 2019. In fact I will say in 2019/2020 season and the 2020/2021 season they have failed to get better and actually look worse. I think C/J have shown huge improvements just since 4CC. The PCS for C/J were rightfully much higher IMO because they have better flow, speed, technique, better lifts, better posture, and a better twist. And maybe even better unison. While the quality of C/J is getting better, the quality of C/LD is getting worse. The throws or C/LD are bigger, faster and higher. But she lands so out of control and in such a hunched position, it scores lower. Their lifts are a horror. I think the truest thing I have heard Dave say on SKL is that they could hugely benefit from a better coach. One that pays attention to detail. As for C/J they have better quality all around, but Jessica seems to be in denial that she "just needs to land the triples" like in practice. She has no triple jumps, and she needs to admit it and get Rafe added to their coaching team ASAP. JMO.

There wasn't really a story. Their underrotated triple sal in the short program was mistakeningly, I'm assuming, called downgraded and they lost a couple points. Granted, we didn't have access to good frame-by-frame replay. But the rest of their scoresheet ranged from fair to a bit generous. Yet I'm hearing these excuses about why they came in 4th and talk of tall shaming, instead of acknowledging that being tall inherently affects the quality of pair skating, which is why nearly all of the pair girls are very short or have bigger height differences with their partners.
