This week, Deanna Stellato and Maxime DesChamps, Ilia Malinin, Kaori Sakamoto and Eva Pate and Logan Bye scored wins at the 2023 Autumn Classic International. Kamila Valieva made her season debut at the 2023 Russian Test Skates and it was...not as brilliant as Mao Shimada's free skate on the ISU Junior Grand Prix. Dave saw a screener for I Have Nothing on Crave and can't stop raving about it. Alena Kostornaia and Georgy Kunitsa made their debut at Russian Test Skates. And there is a debate whether Team Tutberidze was trying to be offensive (or just tasteless) with the Kamila Valieva Black Panther program. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

I don't think Kamila's program was intentionally inappropriate because of who her choreographer is and his past work. He seems to find inspiration from movies and tv shows. Trusova's Cruella, Game of Thrones, Frida, Kill Bill just to name a few. There were also Mulan and Wednesday. And he is certainly no stranger to inappropriate. Remember Trusova's big spander program when she was just 13? I wonder if they bothered to translate the lyrics before they chose that particular piece of music.

AUS and NZ had some interesting moments in the JGP in the men’s and women’s comps. They don’t get the ice time, attention or investment, from countries where rugby rules, but it was unexpected in quality. Was really heartened by the performances by Hana Bath and Yanhao Li.

Test skate starts about

Valieva had eye surgery in the beginning of September, that is why she was not jumping during training before test skates. It was said, that physical activity is kinda forbidden after this surgery in order to avoid negative consequences. Before surgery she planned to perform at least one quad in test skates.

The straight back could be from injury. For example, if her thoracic spine has been injured (I have an injury here), it just doesn’t move; the muscles lock up and it’s hard as a rock, despite any medical intervention, including PT.

Yu-Feng Tsai from Taiwan (Chinese-Taipei) surprise of the week for me, bronze medalist at JGP Osaka. Great skating skills and performance qualities, jumps are nice too, tho she will need the 3-3 at some point.

I know she can be seen as a not memorable skater, but Sofia Muravieva has the best skating skills of all Russian women and she doesn't cheat on her jumps' take-off. I respect that, even though she desperetely needs a better choreographer.

Watching the Ice Dance here made me wonder about the future of the US ice dance teams. I still don't get the same wow when I watch the 2 Madisons in the seasons until Beijing

I saw Mae Martin's show in Toronto last year and Carolyn Taylor (the comedian obsessed with the Calgary Olympics) was there as a guest. They did a bit about figure skating and pretended to skate, interested to see the tv show

hoping for some thoughts on the PATE/BYE score. It was a 13pt increase from Lake Placid. plus 2 in their rhythm dance and plus 5 goe and plus 4 components and plus 1bd. was their performance really that much of an improvemnt, ???.

I actually like Mao Shimada's Lady Gaga sp because I think it's fresh, youthful and age-appropriate for a 14 year old. If she were 18, I would feel differently.

I hear so much about how Russians have no skating skills, over rotating their jumps, etc. What I don't hear is the judges that reward the Russian skaters (Worlds/Olympics). Are they not suitable? Or should we have these two do their judging so the Americans can be honored? FYI, in figure skating, no one can be perfect. You are performing on ice. It does not matter if you are doping or just a plain perfect person that only drinks tea if they have a cold.
