This and That: Russian Political Games, Junior Synchro Worlds (Tessa Virtue, Marina Zoueva)

This week, Tessa Virtue joined other Canadian Olympians by sending a letter to the Canadian Olympic Committee, which had previously supported the IOC’s position on the admission of Russian athletes in a neutral status, and urged not to allow the Russians to compete. Marina Zoueva was contacted and played political chess, while Tatiana Tarasova angered many by equating the letter to the murder of Tessa's fellow friends and competitors. Irina Viner was banned by the FIG while her (ex) husband pressured Russians to be allowed back in fencing. Eteri Tutberidze and Alexander Lakernik are attempting to create a global club skating organization and other countries are pushing back. Meanwhile, Les Supremes Junior was in line to win the 2023 Junior Synchro Worlds until a major error in the free skate. Of course, no one saw it because the ISU moved their stream behind a paywall. We discuss all of it on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

I was so touched seeing all the love and support for Todd and his family. We don’t often see such a genuine reaction love support and care, especially in this sport. Coaching is America is a career that’s is funded all through skaters paying for each lesson. It’s also not always understood that skaters pay for the travel and lodge of coaches to events. That’s how it is supposed to work, but again, the details of how many events Todd was committed to traveling to this year, how many he already paid for and booked (and was waiting for some sort of reimbursement) or any events he paid for himself not expecting any reimbursement is unknown. Yes, some high level athletes have some sort of funding, but that doesn’t often include the coaches. Arrangements can vary. Out of the nature of being a coach, and being caring and supportive of athletes, a coach may not always charge or charge the full amount for comp travel, especially with skaters that don’t yet have the funding. There are many facets to being a coach. Even coaches that charge $250 an hour don’t always have tons of money laying around. There can be a lot of off-ice time, competition time, planning time, etc. that’s uncompensated. In the US, they are independent contractors. Many rinks have a contract in which the coach is essentially paying a “rental fee” to the rink that involves the rink of taking percentage of lesson fees. Coaches coach because they love skating and love teaching. They aren’t coaching for the money, fame or adoration- at least not in the US. The money being raised for Todd is likely not going to be enough. It’s just hopefully enough for the family to not declare bankruptcy, pull their kids out of college, lose their home, or endure financial ruin. In the US, a large percentage of people filing for bankruptcy do so over medical bills.

I donated anonymously to the Todd fund. Hospital stays and rehab is very expensive in the US and who knows how many months he will need. Wishing him and his family the best during this difficult time.

I’m fascinated by what happened to Marina after Sochi. She had the IAM of her time and it totally imploded. Is it true that the Shibutanis blocked other US teams from training with Marina? Could she not find a halfway decent technique coach?

Great video you two! By the way, I don’t know if you would want them or not, but I have the 1998 Olympics ladies short program on VHS. I also have the 2001, two, or three I can’t remember which year, target stars are ice TV broadcast. It’s got Scott Hamilton, Kurt Browning, Tara Lipinski, Kristi Yamaguchi, etc. It’s the one where Kurt and Tara skate together and Tara has that purple sailor dress. I used to be a big Tara fan back in the day lol. I have seen that performance with Kurt and Tara on KZfaq but I haven’t seen the entire show from that year. Dave Lease!!! My mother was a post-doc. Fulbright Scholar on her flute. In college, as a performance major, at the University of Tulsa it was required of her to be part of the marching band. She was color guard because she could play her flute up to her personal standard. So skating and flute bad idea because both could not be done well. And synchro def. needs a sousaphone!!!🥰

This being one of her "tactics" to make him do better, like trying to upset him before he skated - also a "tactic". Honestly, I did wonder when Dave would talk about things she'd say sometimes. I did think, "I wouldn't have time for that B.S. as an adult skater", which is the decision he said he came to after her obnoxious behavior after that competition. @janmacklam4049
@janmacklam4049 Жыл бұрын
It was 40 big name Canadian athletes from several sports who signed the letter. I think it got put together quickly to reply to the news that there was a possibility that athletes from Russia and Belarus would be allowed to compete at the 2024 Olympics, rather than wait for months to get a thousand signatures, in case the decision was made in the meantime. It was a timely response by 40 athletes who obviously represent many others.

Yeah, figure skating as a sport is dying a slow death, by its own organisation's procrastination on dealing with really serious issues of the sport. Like any other system, at the end of the day, a tolerance of corruption always erodes the good of any system in the end. I didn't bother with Recast, so to learn that, while they are still sitting on their hands on the disciplinary action for doping, they pivoted to data mining, on some platform no one has ever heard of? What on earth is wrong with the ISU? Meanwhile you have Yuzuru Hanyu selling out his shows, in top athletic form and showing that figure skating can have an appeal, a market and fanbase if invested in and done correctly. It's just 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♀️ the road not taken by this sport got it here.

The programs are all the same, as of course skaters are all going for the same elements now. I'm sorry but it's boring. Yes, every once in a while someone like Yuzuru or Kamila transcends, however it's so relatively rare that it makes the rest of the skater's cookie-cutter performances look watered down. Creativity of original programs is a facet which could be mined, but as of now, it can't be. How about a backstory on some of these folks like Todd? Not everyone knows this stuff. And wtf "personal situation with Johnny Weir"? Come on guys, seriously. Forgive me, but you guys do this a lot, and it feels very "clique - ish". If you want new viewers, this doesn't help. Canadian frontline healthcare provider here, experienced in both acute care and long-duration inpatient rehabilitation settings: from what the family has shared, he will need extensive rehabilitation and will need to be moved to the US (this may be specialized medical travel, I don't know what they will decide). I can not even imagine what American specialized postcardiac inpatient rehabilitation costs. As well, there may likely be long-term disability and medication costs as well as ongoing monitoring (again, in the US). Plus the extensive lost income to both coaches and the overall disruption to the family. Your comment is extremely unnecessary and cannot have been made out of kindness.
