This week, the top male figure skaters on the planet put on a spectacular show at the 2023 World Championships in Saitama. Shoma Uno battled an ankle injury to defend his world title. Ilia Malinin landed the first quad axel at the World Figure Skating Championship. Junhwan Cha, Kevin Aymoz, Jason Brown and Kazuki Tomono displayed a combination of artistry and athleticism that delighted audiences. Daniel Grassl and Eteri Tutberidze continued a partnership that made skating audiences uncomfortable. We break it all down on the latest 'This and That'.

I appreciated your sincere posting and JunHwan Cha had to wear new skating boots at 2023Worlds; however, he won the silver medal🥈; he finished both clean programs: short-Michael Jackson dance medley and free-007 James Bond No Time To Die Sound Track They were artworks! His personal best and season best total 296.03 points AMAZING!❤ Then, he made a new legend he was recorded as the first Korean male skater to be a medalist at World Figure Skating Championships At 2023 World Team Trophy, Captain Cha and his national team 🇰🇷 won the Silver medals. OMG This even was the absolute best, it had EVERYTHING : The top 6 absolutely killing it, Shoma the undisputed champion, Jun the surprise silver medallist (totally deserved it), ilia landing 4a and making history, Kevin and Silvia being Kevin and Silvia, Jason showing us what art on ice looks like, Keegan showing us his kids photos (and even forgetting his phone in sp), Mark Hanretty getting emotional and appealing to Keegan to not quite fs, the absolute joy of the last 2 mins of kazuki's fp, Queen Belinda calling out morisi's jump technique, morisi sitting in the kiss and cry with eteri on one side and and Gubanova's coach on another making me wonder the whole time who had more Botox to their faces... And of course there was the wonderful saitama crowd, so generous with their ovations and support. It was just such a good event all around, I was personally having a real bad day all day, when I sat to watch it and the whole event filled me with such excitement happiness and made me feel grateful to be fan of fs.

We can all agree Japan has the best audience in the world. Absolutely exciting to watch. Jason brown and Kevin are simply amazing. I wish Jason would learn a quad toe to be more competitive. The commentator belinda was refreshingly honest. She didn't shy away from Morisi saltoe. She knows her technical components. She was dragging the judges 😂

She rocks! She'd also hadn't shy away from the same Shoma's toe jumps problem, but they still got the monstrous GOE, sadly...

Jason is better with the quad salchow though. He landed one who got almost positive GOE and ratified as fully rotated in competition, I think it was Worlds 2021 or something--it did not get positive GOE because of a little stepout if I remember correctly). So it would be that instead of the toe anyway. But I think Jason should stick to triples and keep himself healthy, he is very competitive when clean and he usually is clean. Worlds, and men in general, are usually a mess, this year was the exception, so if he continues, he could/would medal--maybe not Worlds, but GPF/4CC for sure.

She did get significantly better towards the final events... but on the first days (and even on the men’s free skate for the first few groups) she kept commenting “before” the jumps... it was kind of relentless spoiling... and she kept commenting on every position on the combination spins which was kinda distracting... hopefully she picks up from Mark’s style, which is as interesting as it’s non-intrusive, and lets go of the evident hangover style of commentary from her Olympic channel broadcasts... PS., big contrast, to be fair, with the atrocious American commentary that’s not only super intrusive but relentlessly self-promoting... it’s like they must be the protagonist even during the skate 🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️

What an event. The final group was so thrilling to watch. Seeing Jason deliver and remind us all why we love this sport started things off beautifully. His performance made me so emotional. I was not all expecting Kevin to follow with the performance of his career. His skating is so dynamic, I can't look away when he skates. Even Keegan with his errors and cheesiness brings so much positivity and joy that this sport so often lacks. And Jun - wow. I am also totally obsessed with his quad Salchow. I can't think of anyone who has done it better. I loved his programs this year but I also think he is capable of something more sophisticated. I'm looking forward to see what he does next year. I am so so happy to see him skate these two clean programs when it mattered most. It was so excited to see Ilia land the quad axel too. And Shoma...what can I say. His free program is stunning. Even with his mistakes he did what he needed to do. He had a charming moment at the end of the performance, reminiscent of Artur Dmitriev at the end of the 94 short program lol. What an exciting event to see not only so many different kinds of skaters but to see so many perform so well. Belinda and Mark as commentators was the icing on the cake. And Tracy's reactions to Jason was the cherry on top.

I was so excited to hear Belinda back in commentary, because she was on the world stream of the 2018 Olympics that I ended up watching, and her commentary made the sport so interesting and accessible to me as a newcomer that I decided to watch it outside of the Olympics for the first time… and here I am, still obsessed! I love how clear, truthful, and technical she is, which is also what I value in TSL! Always love when you deep dive into each discipline like this for worlds ❤

I agree with Jonathan on Jun's programs as well. I think the more "accessible" music, while less sophisticated, perhaps, than Shoma's FS and Jasons SP are truly compelling AND entertaining AND the kind of performances that win over new figure skating fans. Shae-Lynn is just perfect for Jun. I could highlight about 20 specific moments I love in the choreography. I often think about the fact that Jun is a STAR in Korea, a great dancer, can sing, could easily make a living in boy band or as a model/actor. I respect that he chooses to continue to pursue this difficult, arduous sport, when he could be rich and famous in a much "easier" way. I truly respect him for that.

Comparing Nathan and Ilia together is so ridiculous. Nathan has not lacked artistry since he was a child, but when he just added a large number of quads to the program, he put his priority on stabilizing his jumps. When he gradually stabilized his jumps after 2018, he found balance of technique and artistry , and constantly trying different styles, each style was performed quite well (because he has always been a good dancer). Nathan has always been an all-around skater, Ilia is not, at least not yet.

The men's event was by far the main event of this Championships. That final flight of men in the free skate each delivering one after another was really great to watch, and it's really great to see Junhwan put it all together here - he's always been on the verge of this level of success and this was a huge moment for him. Skating Scores has been a really great resource and quite eye-opening, as always: it was interesting to see the Japanese judge and US judge (along with three other judges) have Junhwan first in the free and Shoma second. The US judge also had Junhwan first in PCS. I will say that to me Junhwan's free skate was really captivating right from that amazing 4S which made it the skate of the night, although I think it could have gone either way between who won the free skate and the judges were clearly split themselves. Also I noticed in the scoring sheets that while Ilia definitely needs to work on his PCS, he also needs to really clean up the quads. His final TES was less than a point above his BV, because he was underrotating or landing quads on the q. If he takes a couple out and goes for a clean program in the free, he'll garner better GOEs. He said that he wanted to focus on taking less risk and going for clean programs next season, so hopefully this has indeed been both a successful first senior season and a good learning experience for him.

He wasn’t completely on in the FS. I think if all the Quads were landed with precision, he would have taken Silver. Ilia seemed content with his placement and scores but Raf shaking his head was kind of off-putting. Seems like he’s trying to shape Ilia in the same style as Nathan and expecting huge results in a couple of seasons. I really appreciate Ilia going for all the Quads. I think it’s possible for him to develop even more artistically and hopefully peak as the full package Olympic season 🤞🏽

@Slumberland I think Raf is in for a rude awakening: the judges aren't going to put up with just a "jumper" anymore & especially not in a competition where the majority of the top seven can skate clean with high component scores. He also isn't Ilia's main coach &, from interviews, Ilia seems to want to be a complete skater. Raf is dealing with an Eastern European skating family, & I doubt his opinion is the final one.

If Ilia is going to be a rising star, he needs better packaging. I am not sure if the USFS envelope covers this or he needs to make more $$ in shows, but he needs 1. A better choreographer with a truly good musical sense -- combined with improved musical choices. 2. A whole summer of stroking classes with Tracy (or Jason) at TCC and 3. a costume designer. Frankly I don't think his parents should spend the $$ on Raf. Why doesn't Raf focus on helping Camden with his consistency? In addition to Ilia, we need another American man to improve!

Im so glad the judges decided to put Cha in front of Malinin (I was really worried after the ice dance judging farce). Junhwan's free skate got me screaming, his Ina Bauer at the end of a glorious program was a real icing on the cake. I was delighted to see Jason skate so well too, his every movement is a piece of art on the ice. Not a fan of Kevin though, his reactions (both positive and negative) are off-putting for me.

Kevin's LP this year was very empty, not much going on choreographically and then only a little bit going on after he completed his last jump. His LP should've been behind Jason's. I'm not a fan of OTT emotion in the K&C from anyone.

I'm glad figure skating is starting to send the message that components are important, but I think they also need to send a message that the skills you are throwing need to be clean and deductions need to be harsher. Putting aside the fact that it's frustrating that a program that didn't even score a full point on total GOE got on the podium- when people are consistently throwing skills that aren't consistent because they think they have to do this to be competitive, it's how injuries that could end up being career ending happen. It's the same issue I have with Gymnastics, but that's a debate for your other channel 😂

Not be be negative, but I'm so frustrated with ISU. I've been a long time fan, but with this year full competitions being nearly impossible to watch back in the US, it's just not worth following. It seems like I can't even watch back individual programs unless NBC uploads it to youtube. That combined with years of scores making no sense in terms of reflecting what was put on ice, the doping, the abuse, the lack of solid identities, retirements, etc, it doesn't even seem like a real sport. They need big changes but it doesn't feel like they care at all :/

But yeah, the men’s event was wonderful. I’ve never been the biggest Shoma fan, but I’m happy for him nonetheless. Junhwan nailed it. Ilia has this great fiery spirit that really animates his skating. I hope people will stop taking shots at him. No one is above criticism, but some comments are just petty. Kevin and Jason were incredible and epitomize everything good about skating. Keegan definitely made my heart happy. So, so sad for Adam. I adore his programs and think he is amazing. Even with Yuzu and Nathan there was always the possibility of them not fully delivering and when Shoma or someone else would, they could sneak in. I agree with David. I'm a huge fan of Junhwan's skating (and especially his gorgeous Ina Bauer, OMG, I can't get enough of it). Yet, I also think that with his amazing qualities, and especially the breathtaking lines, his flexibility and amazingly fluid upper body movements... He could probably do much more original things. I mean, sure, Michael Jackson or James Bond are always great to skate to, but they're also overused and not very original. Or at least, do what Kevin Aymoz did with Gladiator: take something that has been overused, but put a different twist on it (as he did by using the calm, eerie "Now We Are Free" rather than all the epic pieces of the soundtrack that we've heard a million times).

There was no ranking event between 4CC and Worlds. There is only one ranking comp, which is a 4CC qualifying event, and it was before the GPF this season. The competition you referred to here is the Winter Sports Festival held by the KSOC (not KSU), which is for all the winter sports, not just figure skating. It's important domestically (for school and such) but less so for skaters who are internationally competitive, so top skaters tend to skip if they've already won. Junhwan didn't compete last season so kind of expected him to compete this season. Also he said he wanted to compete there because he didn't do well at 4CC, so he wanted to kind of overwrite that experience and get energy from the Korean fans. It was surprising to see Yelim compete as she'd already won at the University level last season. When asked after 4CC whether she would compete at the Winter Sports Festival, she said she would see how she felt and consult her team and since she did compete, I guess she felt well enough at the time.

I think Jun is important because his programs are contemporary and entertaiing and might pull in a younger audience for figure skating if we can get him some PR outside of Asia. I’ve been a Patreon supporter and listening to almost every public KZfaq conversation you have since then and some of the supporter ones, And I’ve been to dozens of national world and Grand Prix events, but it’s still doesn’t mean I know what you’re talking about if it’s only a first name that’s dropped.
