This week, the ISU Awards took place and the top members of the skating world (minus Eteri Tuberidze) zoomed in for the festivities. Even though Yuzuru Hanyu won Most Valuable Skater, his fans were upset long before the event ever took place. We also break down the Chinese Esquire article about An Xiangyi and her mother and break down the latest Safe Sport news and comments from Betina Popova in the latest edition of 'This and That'.

Hanyu is a phenomenon in FS and I wonder how the ISU would make $$$ after he retires. For the past year or two, they have been shamelessly milking so much money out of his fans with outrageous ticket prices for the competitions he's in. Seems like they want to make as much as possible while they can. I don't think Fanyus do not believe in his talent or are afraid of his retirement, but they sense what ISU is doing and simply do not trust them because of it.

@Fiona Exactly. And that is why ISU came up with the Awards to get more media attention and hopefully sell the name of the next rising star....but for the time being, there is no one in the league of Hanyu's popularity, thus, they are blatantly charging his fans as much $$ as possible (like GP Canada last year) and ended up upsetting them.

M MG M MG No one here is implying that though? The sport will continue to strive and flourish of course even with Hanyu’s retirement. OP is just curious how it will be when that time comes as he is the only skater as of the moment who can sell out tickets. ISU needs money and has been setting ridiculous prices on every competition he is in (maybe law of supply and demand but still). They need tickets to sell out, they need those sponsors. Hence these awards show to see who will be the next new star.

I think that Grand slam winner in figure skating is when one skater (man or ladie) win all gold medal in olimpic season. Example win gold medal in: GPF, European or 4Cc, Olimpic games and worlds. Yuna kim is the first skater (ladies) and Yuzuru Hanyu is the first skater (men) in win all tittles in figure skating. The only skater who was Grand slam winner in figure skating is: Alexei Yagudin, because he won gold medal in GPF, European, Olimpic games and worlds in one season.

Fans of Yuzu are upset because ISU uses his name to get them money. It wasn't about recognition at all. They need money to organise the awards for Worlds 2021, and for that they need to sell those pricey tickets. They milk Yuzu's fans as long as he competes. Next year MVS will be given whoever ISU, strong federations and agencies want to hype up the most for the Olympic season. ISU is not that dumb after all, it is all planned. Don't worry about Yuzu fans and the whole fandom. They will continue to go to his shows which will all be sold out, and they will support Yuzu in whatever he wants to do in the future.
@thulekovish8188
@thulekovish8188 4 жыл бұрын
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Imagine the madness had Nathan Chen or Gabrielle & Guillaume won?! Yuzu's fans are NEVER happy, it's never enough. Different kinds of awards for different purposes and this one befits Yuzuru's fame and fortune. The Gold medal is a recognition for athletic excellence. Fans also have a choice to stay home and watch the competitions on TV when tickets are outrageously priced. After all it's sport and entertainment, not a cult function. Except for the Nationals, all competitions are international involving athletes from other countries with their legions of devoted fans. How about them? The ISU doesn't depend on one athlete, the world doesn't revolve around one person.
@tsmith908
@tsmith908 4 жыл бұрын
@@thulekovish8188 And your point is? Fans were already mad in the fall of 2019 when the all-events tickets were already sold for Montreal and the organizers changed the program. It was independent from the fact whether Yuzu won MVS or not. ISU needs money and they desperately milk Hanyu fans as long as he competes. Of course the sport will move on when he retires, but with empty seats and falling ticket prices. If you think it is fine for ISU to have competitions with barely any audience (except a very few countries) then OK.

She has stated many times she does not like lyrical classical music, she prefers pop. Hopefully she will get something she actually enjoys skating to! She was actually asked in an interview if the coaches chose music for her or if she listens to fans and her answer was "Why would someone else chose my music? I'm the one skating the program so I chose the music." As it should be.
@etherealtb6021
@etherealtb6021 3 жыл бұрын
@@Helen-me1vn I agree with her. I've always said this. However, they should be able to find some classical music or a film score that she likes. Maybe from a favorite movie of hers, where she likes the music. It doesn't have to be lyrical. BTW, I like her music choices. Just need something bigger for the Olympics!

Seriously, could you guys go at least 3 videos without making a snarky remark about Jason Brown. Maybe Jason isn't Brian's favorite student however, Jason had a great season. Therefore, I don't think that Brian Orser is bored by Jason. I don't think that Brian would have allowed Jason to train at the Cricket Club, if he didn't see potential. Jason has paid dividends for Brian and Tracy. Hopefully, Jason makes the 2022 Olympic team.

Rachel Heller it’s only logical that he is not Brian’s favorite student...because he is not even Jason’s main coach. Brian made it clear (I think it’s in his interview with Jackie Wong) that Jason is mainly Tracy’s project and he is there to support them (sort of like a secondary coach). I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, and as you said, Jason improved a lot this season and he had great results. But I agree, Brian did give Jason the ok to train at TCC at the end of the day and he must have seen something special in him.

I will be fine if he retires because his senior career is so long in which he won every gold medal that is possible l (every big gold medal at least twice, except 4CC LOL). He is a unique skater who gave to the sport so much. Imagine how hard it must be, with all the injuries he suffered in the past seasons. I will watch him skate in shows after he retires. Maybe it's because I've been cheering for him for a decade now, and newer fans want to watch him more. It's more understandable. But I disagree that most fans are afraid of him retiring.

Alena needs to skate to something she likes. Fans want her to do lyrical/classical. But you have to watch her interviews, she has said many times that she doesn't like lyrical or classical. You have to respect her choices, otherwise it's just forcing a program on her that she doesn't want to do. And she's a teenager and from her interview she sounds like she's a very girly fantasy story pop music loving girl, so she wouldn't be happy doing the lyrical programs.

I haven't watched the ISU Skating Awards, since it sounds like so much clownery going on. I knew that Yuzuru Hanyu would win the MVP award, though. Kostornaia being chosen for Best Newcomer was deserved. These things I have heard. The Xiangyi An situation sounds new. The mother sounds very ambitious, does the daughter share the same mindset, though? If the mother and father were smart, they'd try to get the best coach for Nini (hasn't the mother heard of Brian Orser, who coached Yuna Kim, Javier Fernandez and Yuzuru Hanyu to Olympic and World medals? Rafael Artunyan, who coaches Nathan Chen, two-time World champion and 3-time Grand Prix Final champion?) and ship her off, even if it means Nini leaving China. Hell, they could get Shen/Zhao to agree to send her to the US or Canada for better coaches (and training conditions). Interesting that Tutberidze won't take in Nini. Betina Popova's article I have not yet read, but sounds very insightful into the world of ice-dance. Wow, you're doing the Lord's work in making all these judging videos. Finishing the 'Was Yuna Robbed?' series sounds wonderful, though, Dave and Jonathan, don't you think by now that all of us know the truth? I totally agree with Jonathan. Fanyus have this RIDICULOUS victim mentality and yes, feel incredibly threatened whenever someone dares say anything that's even in the slightest positive about one of his rivals, as if that automatically nullifies any of Yuzu's achievements and contradicts his great qualities. Meanwhile everyone and their mother is praising Yuzu to high heavens... Honestly, I think they just romanticise and enjoy this whole sappy narrative of the poor, maltreated and oppressed hero with a heart of gold... (who conveniently happens to be attractive too, at least if you're into the whole androgenous k-pop aesthetic, and doesn't that make it so much easier to love and feel bad for him?). Rooting for him makes them feel morally superior and liek they're good people too.
